Major Nelson: "We Are Listening!"

No, they aren't that stupid.

The inevitable digital console future is coming
, the industry will get their no used games always online console someday. It just depends on when consumers will accept it.

I highly highly doubt that!

A huge part of the console market are just mainstream/causal gamer/children (whose parents buy them stuff). Those people will NEVER accept a NO USED games policy - EVER!
Especially for all those dubro gamers, who are always craving for that "next big thing", a no used games policy/digital only future is a no go.
On the one hand they are willing to spend 60 on the next cinematic action fest, but due to the fact that those games are pretty short on gameplay time (most of them you can beat in one weekend), they don't see why they should keep their once played through games forever.
Instead, they head to their next Gamestop and sell it, so they get a decent amount of money back to buy the next 5 to 10 hour action fest.
That's why Gamestop has been so damn successful with selling used games.
I might be wrong, but that's really what I believe. Parents and the other mainstream gamers are like that as well.

We are in the position we are in now because they tried to clarify the situation.

I don't think they've ever tried to clarify the situation. They're just giving vague answers and dodging questions because they don't want to highlight negatives so early. Sure, the Internet is complaining loudly, but I'm expecting that to decrease after E3 just because they showed some games people will want and there's more to talk about.

They aren't some stupid company scrambling around. These policies have been thought out and ready to go, they probably just want to see how serious people are with the outrage before deciding how to lay it all out.

Microsoft is listening!!! We hear you!!!

What? You want us to respond also?

How bout a free month of Xbox live? Will that shut you up?

But you can install your games to the HDD on the 360... This isn't anything new.
Yes, but with the Xbox One, the disc doesn't need to be in the blu-ray drive to run.

So unless they do a complete 180 on this feature, and honestly that likelihood is zero, they HAVE to use system wide DRM. They have to.

Sounds like no DRM?

That's too hopeful. It's going to be a relaxation of the DRM if there's any changes at all.

The alternative is they play the long game, drop all DRM talk now and implement it at some point in the future when they feel comfortable that any backlash won't be as bad as it would be at launch.

Why is the likelihood of that zero? I mean, I think there will be DRM, but it's possible they will add disc checking functionality. Technically it should be easy to implement.

And with Kinect, they'll always be listening.

You what is funny, I told my wife, who is not a techie or a gamer at all, about the Xbone reveal and how awful it was and she really didn't have a problem with any of it until I told her about the Kinect camera and then she said "yeah I don't want that in our living room"

LOL

Well at least they are acknowledging the feedback. That's promising I guess.

With Xbox One....We are always listening

Nice lol

Honestly, what can they do?

If the system does require every game to be installed on the HDD in order to do that fast switching between The Price is Right and your game; not using some kind of CD-Key authentication will lead to rampant cases of people just lending a game to someone else or buying and then returning the disc while keeping it on their HDD.

They could make it so that you must install the game, but it requires the disc to boot (like PC games did before Steam).

Another option I've said before is a one time authentication when you install the game. When you go to delete/uninstall the game, you're given the option to reset the license. That way MS has their DRM but I could still play offline for more than 24 hours.

I would expect the 'noise' to get bigger even at E3. But we had that 3 minute connection rumor, the internet complained, and Phil said 24hr...I doubt any of these policies have been well thought out.

There's a difference between bad messaging and being poorly thought out. The console comes out this holiday, I refuse to believe they're still finalizing DRM schemes that would cripple the console at launch if implemented incorrectly.

Right now, there's nothing to talk about besides the disappointing media focused reveal and the rumored DRM. The best way for MS to drive the discussion is show off lots of great games that you will need the console to enjoy. The flood of new games at E3 and activity for all three consoles will undoubtedly drown out mundane things like DRM and the economics of used games. MS is hoping it will as well.

"Rounding up the answers"

Translation: Our PR firm is working 24/7 trying to find a way to spin this as a benefit to consumers. Microsoft won't change their stance. Just look what they are doing with Windows 8. It's almost like trolling by putting a fucking start button that takes you to metro.

I flat out to refuse to buy an Xbox that requires a Kinect plugged in to function. I don't see them changing this so nothing else he says really matters.

xxracerxx

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Major Nelson is great at staying in touch with the community. I'm not sold on XB1 but I totally respect that dude.

If by in-touch you mean canned responses like: "policies have not been locked down" ala his Yahoo live chat the other week, then yeah.

And with Kinect, they'll always be listening.

Is there some kind of club to join to make thread-ending, relevant first posts? I want to join, but I'm not sure I can make the cut. There must be a clever people's association that alert each other to new posts, I can see no other way.

Considering the core gamer meltdown after the reveal I expect MS to do what they can to make things right.

Emphasis on "do what they can".

Does somebody have the transcript from the last Major Nelson "Clarification" Q&A to offer this fine poster?

Heck...how long does it take to round up answers? This is no different than the Q and A where he never answered anything and said detsils were coming....

Everyone knows, including Major Nelson, he could make one phone call and get all the details he needs....This isnt some E3 secret.....Just explain it already...

This sounds like another

Sony: We are listening

GAF: >3 you Sony

Microsoft: We are listening

GAF: STOP LYING ITS JUST MORE PR!!!

Looks like someone was thinking what i was thinking haha ^^

Sony = on message, PS4 is for gamers
Microsoft = damage control, why did Phil have to open his mouth, our Helen Keller strategy to their DRM questions was going so well..

Why doesn't it just work like this:

Disc in the tray: no authentication needed.
Game installed to HD w/ no disc in tray: quick authentication check.
Digital downloads: no authentication.
