Xbox One: Power Brick revealed

I'm always bummed about the power brick when I unbox one. It's funny because for most people it is a not issue. There are certainly more issues than the presence or otherwise of a power brick. Mind you, I kinda wish the PS3 phat had come with one - it may have reduced the size a little.

I just find it funny how this design basically screams less heat and noise yet everyone is complaining about the looks of it.

It really isn't a issue, you put it behind your TV and never have to touch it again.

Not exactly

Not a big deal for me personally
Are people really complaining about something you're going to hook up and throw behind your tv never to be seen again?

Scraping the bottom of the barrel are we guys?

You would think NeoGAF would be happy, this means less heat in the box itself.

Probably flashbacks to the power brick issues 360 experienced earlier on (overheating, causing crashes, etc)

Holy shit over 10 pages for a thread about power brick

I prefer external power bricks. That way systems are smaller and cooler.

If that power brick is the same size as the final one, it's pretty darn big though.

eh, Brace yourself for people saying E3 was just as awesome as the reveal and following day no matter what they do.
Nah that conference was legit bad. E3 conference is already pretty much guaranteed to be a success. Problem is, Sony and Nintendo will be successful as well, so we are gonna see a dick contest no matter what.

Why is that? With the powerbrick built in, you have one power cord. It's easier to manage.

Easier to replace maybe? I've had it with the PSX and Dreamcast failing internal power sources. Although the OGBox is a fucking tank, never failed on me.

Being Japanese I hate the power brick...

Fang Shoo and shit

Can't remember the awesome quote from "Trouble With the Curve". The Clint Eastwood film

OMG what a disaster...OMG QQ..you guys are such losers who make such a big deal out of this...it is no bigger than the 360 power brick....get over yourselfs...

External powerbricks are excellent when they allow the designers to keep the console itself small. For example, the Wii's design is an excellent utilization of an external powerbrick.

However, here it just seems like they're acknowledging that their console is gigantic by modern standards as it is and they can't afford to make it any bigger. :/

You should never put the power supply inside the console....for many, many, reasons...

Electronic hardware designers don't put the power supply externally as a rule. The goal is to have it internal. You make it external when you can't have it internal and make it small enough or cool enough.

Kinda sucks there's a brick, but...you know, first world problems.

If your new videogame console having a power brick is the biggest drama in your life, then you're doing pretty well.

Why do people that didn't have an issue with the 360 power brick have a problem with the XOne's? It's not like the XOne is a gigantic console.

That was my point, even with it taken out it produced too much heat. It's not a fix all by having a powerbrick..

That's not correct at all. It produced the normal amount of heat. A design flaw caused the RROD, not the heat. And since they took care of the flaw, RROD is no longer a consistent problem. The external brick is serving its intended purpose.

All my problems are first world problems. I live in the first world. =)

that's not true at all. maybe your strips was faulty? mines plugged in to a strip and has been for about 6 years.

Same here.

Also, I'm not sure what the deal is here but this connector on the back of the Xbone looks like a figure-of-8 mains power connector, not a brick connector:

Who cares though? I mean I'd like it inside the console but it's not the end of the world.
It does mean a cooler console and if the power supply dies you can pick up another one fairly easy.

I don't even own a 360 (have done) and I won't be buying an Xbox one - but honestly it's not that bad a thing. Especially considering these new consoles aren't exactly going to run cool.

And yet Sony have done it with every single home console bar the first PS2 slim.

Clearly it isn't that big a deal.

I prefer them being inside but I can live with either.

I don;t think they are going to run as mega hot as some people expect. Yes there is more power in them than the last generation, but they are being made on a 28nm process which means they can use less voltage which means less heat. In addition both will be better at adjusting power usage as needed than the PS360 so when sitting on a menu and not actually doing anything power draw should drop.

I wouldn't expect either to run hotter, or possibly even as hot as launch PS360 machines.

Nope. It's the same as the 360 Slim port. It's far too big to be the figure 8 one. And figure 8 ones have prongs that stick out, not holes.

Dat motherboard still looks cheap compare to what the other 2 japanese companies are making.

Wasn't aware Sony has shown PS4's mobo. That aside, I think component placement on a PCB can be an art/design in itself. I sometimes base my PC mobo purchase on the look...honestly good design sways my purchases alot...down side of being a designer I guess.
