XBOX ONE Reveal: UI faked from the start. Very choppy, and CBoaT

By "day one", they actually have until release, too. If it's an always online console they can totally pull a Wii U and patch half the UI in at launch (or fix half the UI) and get none of the backlash for it assuming their servers are stable. They clearly already have something running that works like they expect it to only running way worse, so it's basically a question of whether it's possible for them to have it run like they want it to on the real hardware. It should be.

You don't think Sony wants that demographic too?

I think the approach is vastly different and one company has my interests in focus (games) for launch and will tackle attempting to gain that segment later on.

The other seems to be dead locked on getting that demographic more so because they know they have the gamers already. I feel like they might have a game or two that will be cool but in the grand scheme of things it's a large illusion.

I'd love to eat some crow at E3, honestly.

I was the one that made that thread. It turned out they had two playthroughs on their page. The demo one, and a different one. I mistakenly took the different one as the only upload. They didn't fake it.

I see. I didn't look at it past your initial post beause I thought it would be silly to judge a console's unfinished features months out from launch.

C'mon now, Microsoft doesn't fake stuff at presentations.

That wasn't from a presentation, it was from a performance.

Why is it people always just go, "Well, Sony too!"

To make themselves feel better about their poor allegiances? Who knows.

The funny thing about the "Sony too!" bandwagon is that most of the time they are wrong. About the share button, about always online, about forced PSEye etc. Only thing that remains to be seen is the used game angle. Hopefully Sony don't disappoint on that front, so far based on what they've said, they won't there either.

Since some people thought it was deceiving. I was mainly paying attention to the choppy ass video feed, but here:

Without tarring everyone with the same brush, I see a lot of people willingly ignore potential issues with the PS4 when they are raised and many more jumping on the Xbox One funeral party highlighting issues over and over again.
And in the past we've certainly seen that same phenomena work completely against Sony and work for MS. Or Nintendo. Or any other major player in the industry. Balance isn't achieved moment to moment, never has been.

Am I crazy for thinking they will NEVER get the TV part to be super responsive and fast without lag? Aren't you just controlling your cable box with the Xbone? If so, you're limited to how fast your cable box can respond to commands and process signals.

My cable box from Comcast isn't terrible as far as cable boxes go, but it is still pretty slow and there is often a noticeable lag between the push of a button and a response. You cannot instantly switch channels or quickly scroll through the guide.

For the most part, you'll only have to worry about the speed of changing the channels. The guide will mostly be all through the Xbox One and you won't be using the cable box guide. I honestly don't think the speed of changing the channels is going to be too big of an issue. Yes, it's not instant, but you only need instant for channel flipping. If you're just jumping to what you want to watch, you'll deal with the 1 to 2 second lag as it changes to the channel after you tell it to. It won't be a big deal.

Yes indeed. I do the same thing with everything in the industry. Hope but verify.

After the horror that was Aliens:CM, I do that too. If I haven't played a demo of it or haven't spoken directly to someone I trust who has played a demo, or haven't seen direct gameplay footage off of a stream or something I am a tiny bit skeptical to it.

A Verizon Fios box I've used at someone else's house was WAY worse. Like astonishingly slow. I don't know how a computer connected via HDMI could speed that up.

But the other stuff - the laggy video in the corner, the faked presentation, I don't really care about that. I thought it was pretty clear it was a demonstration of a concept not a real live demo.

Now if they can never come close to what they showed, that will be pretty shitty and they'll get deserved hate for it.

There's several layers of lag inherent into cable box switching with an external device.

1) You tell the command to your Xbox
2) It has to process the audio
3) It process the audio and tells the system to initiate a channel change
4) The channel change means the system has to send a signal out of the IR blaster to the cable box
5) The cable box picks up the signal and begins negotiating a new channel feed
6) And as they are usually DVRs, they have to buffer a second or two as they change the live feed cache
6a) And not all HD channels are the same resolution, so the video feed may even change resolutions, necessitating a refresh.

It's going to be laggy no matter what. Plus it has to constantly rescale a 1080p signal down to a thumbnail while outputting it's own 1080p signal.

To make themselves feel better about their poor allegiances? Who knows.

PS4 can't have the same used game DRM. Games work offline without ever connecting online.

The thing is, you don't bring a balanced opinion and it's actually offensive for you to get all self-righteous about it. It's okay to be biased but to go to a mountain top and look down at us plebs is foolish to say the least. You like the Xbone. It's really is okay, we all have our preferences.

As of now, I won't be buying the Xbox One or PS4. I'm saving for a wedding (expensive!).

Do I prefer the Xbox platform? Yes. Does that make me biased and self-righteous? No.

I don't think I've ever looked down upon anyone on NeoGAF, certainly not purposely.

Indeed. The PS3 did take an almighty beating, some from myself admittedly.

Thats rough but it could be because of a million things, compatibility with the cable box, not a finished OS product, you know, pick one.

Sony hasn't talked about services, or shown us the console design. There's no way to know what Sony's focus, balance, or interest is. Actually we do know the interest, and it's the same as Microsoft: to make money from as many people as possible. They have the same goals in mind and let's be honest here, the same target demographic in mind. You really think Sony is setting aside the fact that they are the number one Netflix device or the fact that they got the NFL Sunday Ticket rights as them not caring about that demographic? It's silly to believe otherwise.

Hey, it's fine with me if they faked it, the problem was that they asked people to applaud after showing how 'fast" it was. Now that's straight up lying.

I don't expect your UI to be perfect at this stage of development, but please don't lie about it.

I'm sure the response will be similarly worded West Coast 1% elitism about how we should move to a more advanced environment with better internet infrastructure and better selection of cable providers.

Cool a janky interface overlaid on top of a janky interface! Just what I always wanted!

Oh wait my cable box runs fine and I have no problem remembering what channel is what.

So looking closer at the video they are indeed using an error screen as a spacer in the UI!
That plus how dog slow it is ATM makes me wonder how insane they are to think it is a good idea to show it to the press in it's current state!

-TV, TV, Sports, CoD.

-Hesitant to talk about specs for obvious reasons.

-DRM galore.

-Every executive at the company says something different showing they have no fucking clue what they're doing.

-Lied about Ram bandwidth.

-Got torn apart for the Cloud talk.

-Arrogance has surpassed 2006 Sony ("Everyone has fast internet", "Consumers will buy anything", "We'll kill Sony at E3", "Gamers will choose us at E3").

And now we see this.

-Faked OS demonstration.

Tremendous work MS.

So i guess youre one of those people who think the betas should play like the final products then? Good to know.

I think it's more that he's saying that reason you gave was just silly. They aren't going to demo their tv integration to press with a cable box that isn't very compatible.

I'm sure it will work better and faster when it ships. But i don't see anything about it that i would want.
I rather switch on my receiver and i certainly do not want to give voice commands. One button does the trick.

If they don't show amazing must have games than i'm certain i will never ever buy one. Thus far hey did everything wrong.

Xbone can't catch a break.... not that it deserves one though.

It looks alright to me going by the video. It's certainly not elegant but that's about what I expected. My expectations may be low I guess.
