TRUTHFACT: MS having eSRAM yield problems on Xbox One

I have been under the impression that that both Sony and MS were working with the same die space. Difference being X1 dedicating some space to ESRAM where PS4 shader cores would go. But from what I have been reading here, some are suggesting the X1 die is actually larger. Can someone clarify?

X1 die is much bigger from what we know. 5m transistors vs. 3m.

What exactly is so ground breaking with the Xbone? I keep seeing comments like these. You think its ambitious to add Live TV through an IR blaster? Really?

I WANT a box that 'plays games' I have 4 other boxes that already do what the Xbox One is so 'ambitiously' looking to include.

Pretty much agreed.

If it had it's own TV tuner and own TV DVR system I'd be a lot more interested. I could have less crap in the TV stand, less wire clutter behind it, and perhaps have a faster/sleeker interface for watching TV etc. than having to have a separate DTV DVR that's slow and clunky hooked up.

But just plugging the DVR into the Xbone, controlling it with IR blaster etc. doesn't appeal to me at all.

If they want to be the one set top box people need, then they need a box that can do all that stuff on it's own. Give it a tuner and cable/sat card slot. Or partner with the major cable/satellite providers and put out models through them with discounts for two year TV contracts etc.

I think a lot of people would be interested in a box that could be their game console, DVR and Bluray player as it clears up a lot of clutter in the TV stand, is super convenient for people in dorm rooms, studio apartments etc. and could provide a nice, intergrated home theater experience with voice controls etc.

But they way it really works does pretty much none of that and just adds to clutter etc.

If it's anything like PC Overclocking, a chip gives an expected speed with a certain voltage. Higher voltage = More Heat. If yields are crap, that means many of the chips won't work at expected speeds under expected voltage. So you have a couple of options.

1.) Increase voltage, Chip runs stable at expected speeds, generates more heat.
2.) Lower clock speed on chip, chip runs stable at lower speed, generates expected level of heat.

Of course they could also just ditch the ones that don't meet spec, and run with a shortage.

Huge success story? If you ignore the billions Sony lost.

That's a different argument entirely. if the ps3 sold 120 million units by now Sony would STILL have lost billions. it was a risk they we're willing to take to push Blu-Ray and to a lesser extent the cell processor.

Obviously that didn't pan out, but if you're talking the success of the ps3 as a console it's going to end up as at least number 3 all time in install base, possibly number 2, and it's well positioned the ps4 to succeed it.

Well then it is second then. I remember it being big thing in 2k9. S

Considering the huge drops even this year in gaming market in UK Germany is probably ahead already. During last year is was already close enough. With new console launches UK probably goes ahead again though later this year.

I wouldn't say that PS4 is revolutionary by any measure but there was the segment during the PS4 reveal where they discussed that not only can you allow your friends to watch a live stream but you can allow your friends to take over playing the game. This is HUGE and is nothing that the PS3 or any other console has been able to do.

The Xbox One plays games.

Also, have I said that "Xbone" is a stupid term?

Who writes like that?! Seriously.
Paid shills, that's who. Paid shills who are bad at their job, because I can't imagine it's supposed to be that obvious.

I didn't want to believe it for the longest time, but they exist, they are numerous, and they even are on GAF (generally only for a few weeks until they are banned, luckily).

It certainly made me way more antagonistic towards huge companies, particularly those who brag about their massive marketing budget. Fuck them.

Complaining about it now just reinforces it. Only way you're getting rid of xbone is by coming up with something much, much better. The funny/sad part is that if it had had a much, much better reveal the people calling it "xbone" would be calling it "the one" instead.

At this point everyone use Xbone, only MSFT PR team use Xbox One fully spelled, it's longer anyway.

You mean XbOne then? I prefer XBO anyways.

Well anything that doesn't sound like the butt end of a 12 year-old's boner joke.

Says the guy that calls it "the One".

A look at the design of the One. DRM if old.

Despite all this I still see the One selling gangbusters. Just look at the recent "Xbox One is highest pre-ordered console" threads that have popped up. The 360 built such a strong following that the general population is likely to stick with Xbox. Also none of this stops the One from actually playing games right? I mean the DRM, the policies, all of that is part of the mix but at the end of the day the people that jump on and play CoD are going to be able to do so for the most part.

But please carry on.

Obviously I'm looking at Kinect 2.0 here as well. Perhaps Illuminaroom as well. I just find it disheartning that most of Neo Gaf is falling hook line and sinker for the bullshit render power that both ATI & Nvidia have been flogging us for years...and to be fair here, so have most developers, more intrested in how much anti aliasing they can put on the screen to the detriment of more developed AI and gameplay features Killzone looked AMAZING at the PS4 reveal, but soon as you touch down...well it's the identical game you got 4 years ago. Run....strafe, duck...hide behind cover, shoot the minimal amount of badguys (more polys then the atoms in your body....so we can only render three or four of them at a time). Yawn. I also find it strange how many people have let Sony off scot free for their Socal Media obsession whereas Microsoft are being lambasted for their TV/Multibox orientation. I can't imagine anymore more annoying them my Facebook / Twitter feed being hammered by MR X HAS COMPLETED LEVEL 23 OF CALL OF KILLZONE everytime they press that far too within reach SHARE button.

If you read those correctly I was essentially calling it just "One." I've migrated to XBO recently. Either is better than Xbone, because Xbone is used just because it says "bone" in it.

So what you're saying is, if you measure PS3 by the metrics of success that companies, or indeed anybody with business sense, actually care about, PS3 is a failure, but if you measure it by the metrics of success that gamers are obsessed with, it's done well.

Because it's practically impossible to spot any differences in 99% of the videos. Bayonetta PS3 disaster aside, it's a site for nit picking for nit picking sake. And oh the PS3 version has slightly lighter shade of textures? Well better buy a 360 then...

Edit: Now if Digital Foundary had been around in the ZX Spectrum vs Commodore 64 days...now that would be a different matter...

what if the Xbox Uno is the new ZX?

I changed from E7200 @ 3.9 to Q9300 @ 3Ghz and i can tell you that it wasn't good choice. I didn't spend really any money since both i bought used cheap but aside from very few games like GTA or Crysis i didn't felt any difference.

Because even now games on PC love quick one-two cores than slower 4 cores. But now i see that there are a lot of games that start to use more than one-two cores so 7200 after OC won't do any good.

wont the new core number to aim towards be eight cores since the new consoles comes with eight cores?

feels like PCs with less core might stagger behind performance wise when they develop games that take advantage of more than four cores

that is the implication when one asks if the ps3 is a successful GAME CONSOLE, yes. The only metric that counts there is "did gamers buy it" and the answer there is yes.

Was it successful at propping up sonys bottom line, or making blu ray and the cell processor a success? not really. no one argues that the ps3 was a failure here.

In contrast, the game cube was profitable for Nintendo's bottom line, but sold terribly. it was NOT a successful console

It's interesting because I never understood "Xbone" to be a pejorative term. First time I heard it, it just stuck with me. Had they been calling is "The One" during the conference, I think "The One" probably would have stuck, but "Xbox One" is too much of a mouthful, just like Xbox 360.

Naturally of course, "Xboned" and other such terms have cropped up, which are obviously pejorative. Still, I wonder how many people think it is an insult and how many people just have accepted the name at this point?

It's not that simple when the single thread performance of the 4 core CPU is way WAY higher than the single thread performance of the 8 core CPU.

Reading your proposed Xbox One actually does sound kind of enticing, and it makes a lot more sense with what they are trying to sell the machine as. Heck, why not put in some some of the crap that's on the back of my stereo receiver that bites down on my speaker wire. The look of the box would also make more sense as that type of device. It might not be what someone who wants a high end receiver is looking for but it would clear up boxes for me.

It's also because doggies will forever be associated with it, Xbone just sounds more appropriate.

This thread doesn't make sense to me...anyone with this sort of info would either have to have one of these sort of jobs:
http://www.microsoft-careers.com/go...rmation-and-Services-and-Finance-Jobs/194583/
...where you usually aren't typing in broken English on NeoGAF during your lunch break (trust me I have met people who work in this division and they are normal adults)

...or, you work at one of the suppliers, and are Chinese or managing team of Chinese :p

Apparently this Crazy buttocks person is reliable enough for mods to not lock this thread, but this literally sounds like something that 99.9% of people who work on the core of the Xbox One team would know nothing about.

Also, have I said that "Xbone" is a stupid term?

I had a friend in high school that wanted a nickname for some reason. (hey we were dumb HS guys nothing can be explained) He kept trying to come up with cool nicknames but we would never use it because it has to come naturally. Eventually I just said "take it easy on the nicknames PeeWee" And then he said the worst possible thing "Dont ever call me that again"

His nickname for PeeWee has been stuck with him for 13 years.

The point of the story is that the more everyone protests the name the more likely it will be to stick.

Having said that, I like the XBone name. Its kinda funny.

Kinect 2.0 is just the next iteration in an already explored space. It will work better than Kinect 1.0 but I don't consider that ambitious or innovative.

As far as video game experiences are concerned, I think you will be disappointed if you believe that Xbone will be any different than the PS4.

Regarding PS4 not being called out for a focus on social, I imagine it is because it has gaming related application. While I agree that tweets/facebook posts etc. that merely call out 'MR X HAS COMPLETED LEVEL....' are incredibly annoying (wasn't it Uncharted 3 that started doing that?), as a fighting game fan, I could totally see myself following individuals within the fighting game community that are sharing video of high level matches. That is very interesting to me.

This gen is largely going to be a repeat of last gen in terms of experiences, I haven't been blown away by any of the consoles so far but in terms of Ambition and Innovation, Microsoft is far from top dog. If anyone has taken that medal, its Nintendo. They have taken more risks than MS or Sony with the WiiU.

Sure you did. That's why 21 hours ago you were still calling it "the One". And I don't know if you are in the position to say what's better or worse, if I want to call it the "XboX oNe" who can stop me? I know you are extremely worry with people ignoring Microsoft guidelines, since you want the "o" to be capitalized but since I don't work for Microsoft I don't have to meet those guidelines, right?

But it sounds weird that you complain that people call it "Xbone" while calling the same piece of plastic "the One".

it's still affecting him

Things just seem to keep getting worse for the Xbox one. People will still buy it though.

Can someone explain to me why Crazy Buttocks seems unable to spell anything correctly most of the time? It's a bit difficult to figure out what he is saying at times. Not sure if there is a reason for it.

Since the MS throwing money at 3rd partys thread is closed:

Provinciano is the creator of Retro City Rampage.

Considering major portions of the game content of Retro City Rampage is largely based on direct criticism of Microsoft and personal attacks on the staff of Microsoft, I don't know that he's the most measured critic of the company. It should be clear that he had potent existing views on the company. I might argue potent to a fault. The "new" developments are exact mirrors of his previous views, so I do question whether he's formulating so much as justifying after-the-fact.

There is a reason and its in the OP.

It makes publications harder to use it as a quote and harder for a dev. to search for if they were trying to figure out who it is.

I don't like the name Xbone because it sounds like douchebag shit. Bone*anything* sounds dumb to me, "Bone Dawg in the house!!" is the type of shit that I associate Xbone with. Having said that it doesn't bother me that it'll be the defacto name for the generation. I'll still use X1 because I'm lazy, same reason that I don't put a space in WiiU.

Because no reputable site can use his garbled posts as a source.

I highly doubtful that feature (taking over someones game) will actually work out but it is 100x more interesting than a UI overlaid on live TV.

Maybe not to that extent (or in my case being irate that someone is playing a game for me), but what they mentioned is an extension of the Demon/Dark Souls system where people can invade your game, drop hints which may or may not be a troll and just see people ghosting in your game of their own deaths.

Overall it's a much more interesting prospect as a gamer and how it will affect my gaming.

It certainly has a negative connotation. Where I come from "bone" is also slang for last place. Admittedly my use of it betrays my console loyalties. That's why I keep pushing it. I think it suits the machine well.
