Kiefer Sutherland is the new Snake

As a MGS player since MGS1 in 1998/9 it feels a bit weird. It's almost like getting Nolan North to voice Snake as Kiefer's voice is so well known. Find it weird playing games other than Uncharted where Nolan North is the playable character's VA (Ass Creed, Spec Ops) ...although I did love him in Alpha Protocol lol

I hope for the best.

How many games has Hayter voiced Snake/Big Boss? MGS3, PW, PO? That it?

Has the Japanese VA been changed?

Its Kojima's response that is making me not buy this
"Hey Americans we are screwing with your voice cast for fun"
"na we keeping Japanese Snake because in Japan we actually care about our voice actors"

That's the thing I'm curious about: so Sutherland is doing all the main animation and voice work for Snake and then they'll just keep the Japanese actor?

I don't mind the casting at all, especially since we all expected it. But after watching the presentation on the Konami conference broadcast, the way it was handled really rubs me the wrong way. I'm no fan of modern Hayter and I'm of the opinion that he should be retired as Snake because he's been phoning it in for a while now. But as a fan of the series, I don't really appreciate the message they're sending here. They're basically throwing him completely under the bus, instead of even trying to make him part of the transition process. It feels cruel and kinda rude, even though they're fully entitled to it. Talking up the amazing ability of the new guy to bring what they need to the role also directly suggests that the previous guy was not good enough, and was no longer needed, and has thus been discarded. I don't enjoy seeing something like that played out as marketing.

very well said mang.

The responsibilities of a voice actor are changing. This isn't MGS1 where you had animated Codec sequences or bobblehead polygon models, MGSV, as discussed in the video, is incorporating facial capture and more advanced motion capture. As much as I like David Hayter and have enjoyed his audio performances, these projects are moving beyond his range as an actor.

Nailed it. Now let's hope Kojima eats his pride and gets some help with writing the dialogue.

Konami just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about video game culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in Hollywood where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw someone over in video games, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the video game public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase MGSV for either system, nor will they purchase any of Konami's games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Konami has alienated an entire market with this move.

Konami, publicly apologize and cancel Kiefer Sutherland as Snake or you can kiss your business goodbye.

My. Fucking. God. Brilliant!

I imagine Big Boss as someone with darker hair, and a more fit body, maybe Keifer can workout like mad for the role thou, might work. But he doesn't scream super soldier when I look at him.

Doesn't scream super soldier to you?

Ever seen 24? The man was tortured for hours, literally died, came back to life and kicked the living shit out of everyone whilst butt naked

Jack Bauer is a fucking super soldier.

The voice of Big Boss in Japanese is the father of the voice of Solid Snake. I assume, because of this, the age isn't a problem. Also, the connection probably isn't something they'll want to break.

I'm ok with it simply because its Big Boss who, I feel is a different character from Solid even though the latter is a clone of so he should now have his own voice and Solid should be reserved for Hayter(if he doesn't mess up and blow all his future chances now...)

Course the games should just stay in Japanese and Akio Otsuka would do everyone's voice haha.

What the shit?

Going out on a limb here but I think Tom Waits would be amazing as Snake. He's a fucking amazing actor too.

Anyway, carry on. It will be nice to hear Snake and not be distracted by the sometimes heavy-handed voice acting of the past few games.

A hell of a lot of people would beg to differ. Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill are the definitive voices of those characters.

Have to agree with you on that. BUT I also don't lose my shit when DC picks someone else to voice those characters in their animated movies or games. Especially since Hamill has officially "retired" from doing the voice.

I'll save my judgement until I see the trailer/gameplay, it's gonna be weird but we shall see, I dont want Kiefer voicing Solid Snake though

Meh, whatever. I honestly can't get excited about the game because of:

That horn... that stupid fucking horn...

I don't give a damn what sort of symbolic, metaphorical, grammatical bullshit reasoning Kojima has for it... it's the stupidest fucking thing I have ever seen in the MGS universe -- and that's saying a fucking lot.

It will completely suck any enjoyment out of the game because all I will think is:

"Is this where he gets the stupid fucking horn?"

"Yup. He got the stupid fucking horn."

*cutscene plays* "Look at that stupid fucking horn."

"When will he lose the stupid fucking horn?"

"Yay, no more stupid fucking horn! Wait what was the game about?..."
LOOOL, that's not a horn, that's a piece of metal from an accident that they can't take out yet. At least that's what I get from it.

IT'S NOT A HORN.

Yes, you'll be able to focus entirely on the heavy-handed writing instead.

I'm sure it killed them while watching something like The Dark Knight.

It certainly bothers me when I hear Joker in Injustice. I feel like it's not even him speaking. It feels especially weird since Conroy does the voice of Batman in it, as it should be.

Everyone needs to chill out. This game is dealing with darker tones, and they totally needed someone who knew how to be dark. I mean seriously, did you see Lost Boys?

I guess Ill just continue holding out hope that, if Solid Snake ever comes back, theyll bring Hayter in.
Im not opposed to Kiefer but I just wish they would have done this back in 2004 with MGS3. We wouldnt have even cared back then because Hayter would have never established himself as Big Boss yet.

Oh well. I love 24, I love Kiefer Sutherland, Im sure he will do a great job...but none of that is taking away the sting of having a Hayter-less MGS game. Im sad.

But when the game drops, Ill buy it and most likely forget about all of this. You have me by the balls, Kojima.

As much as we associate Hayter with Snake, he is just horrible. I'm surprised that people are upset about this.

Kiefer is a significant improvement. This came out of left field for me.

I can deal with this. Like the video in the OP says.. this isn't Solid Snake or even Naked Snake.. it's the Big Boss iteration. He's 49 so to have another voice makes complete sense. It's not like David Hayter voiced Big Boss in MGS4 as well.. I just don't see the big deal.
This is how I see it. Kojima's decision makes perfect sense. Hayter was great and will be missed but it's time to try something new.

Honor and shame? What? These are video games we're talking about.

Big-ass Ramp

hella bullets that's true
never played metal gear. This honestly is the most interest I've had in a MGS game. Kiefer's got such a cool voice

I don't exactly see where the comments that Hayter was "complaining" are coming from. He seemed like one of the few voice actors in the industry that really actually cares about the games they do work for. He seemed like he pointed out that he wasn't asked back and that he was disappointed at that. He didn't try to force his way back or blame Kojima Productions, he was just saddened by it.

I would rather have that response than to have his work be so unimportant to him that he doesn't even care.
