Retro Studios working on fucking Donkey Kong

I think people know that DKCR was good, that is why they want to see something new from Retro. It is clear there are talented and creative programmers and especially artists at Retro and we aren't really seeing that unfortunately. Metroid Prime was over TEN YEARS AGO. It was a watershed game for Nintendo and that generation. Making a game like that would buy any other developer a long leash to work on whatever they want but instead all Retro has done is 2 more Metroids and a Donkey Kong Country sequel.

I mentioned it here a few months ago, but this is like if Sony had told Naughty Dog to make a new Ape Escape 5 years ago. Yeah, ND are a talented bunch and probably would have rocked the fuck out of Ape Escape, but then we wouldn't have gotten Uncharted or Last of Us. It just seems incredibly short sighted on Nintendo's part. For all we know Retro has a great, original franchise that could help Nintendo make inroads in the West, be it a FPS, action game, RPG, online game, whatever.

I don't think Nintendo even realizes that they have a dev that can be their own Naughtydog. And that is a fucking shame. Retro has enough gamer cred that a new IP could do very well but they decide to make them make another DK. It will be a good game for sure but it's wasted potential.

I wanted something new, but after seeing the developer video and re-watching the ND I'm really excited for this. It looks awesome.

Because, in any medium, when we see artists who we consider to be extremely talented, we want to see their own visions and creations. Eventually you want to see a great director make a movie out on their own. Eventually you want to see a great studio work on their own IP. Retro aren't some new kid on the block. They created a masterpiece in a lot of people's eyes 10 years ago and, in those same eyes, paid their dues. Many of us would like to see what they can do when they create a completely new world on their own, because by all accounts, they have the technical and artistic staff to pull off something incredible.

If you take out Donkey Kong, these games are basically completely new and hold little resemblance to the SNES Rare games. You could insert any character you want and these games could stand on their own. Yet people bitch that the Kremlings are gone because it's not similar enough.

I understand where everyone is coming from, but my god, I absolutely cannot see how this is a bad thing.

That's a bit of a shame, because I think it's a waste of talent to make Retro do sequels to games they made, period. They should revive/revolutionize old franchises non-stop until they run out.

Nintendo could have given this DKC to some other second party studio.. Retro is so much better than "finishing up what they started".

We'll see how much it sells on Wii U

That is completely irrelevant. You'd have to compare what the hypothetical Wii U version of Metroid would sell.

The point was is that DKCR sold over 3x what Metroid Prime 3 did, both of which were on Wii. Even if DKC:TF didn't sell as well as DKCR, it would probably still beat out what they would have sold on a Metroid game.

Well the third one did kind of stink. I'm not saying it will be a great game, but I think retro has more potential and should be allowed to either re imagine a big IP like they did with Prime, or make their own IP.

I wouldn't mind a new IP, and I would have preferred if they were making a new DK that it be fully 3D. But this game still looks great and it makes the most sense from every perspective.

Another 2D platformer from Nintendo. Great if this is your thing but hardly what I was hoping to see from Retro. If there is one area Nintendo have covered, it's 2D platformers. I don't personally find anything positive in this announcement.

Very disappointing. Thought for sure Retro was gonna get a shot to try something new. Metroid, at the least.

Most talented western developer Nintendo has. They had a chance to make something mind blowing like a new ip they desperately need. Instead, a sequel to a game they already made. What a waste. I guess the real retro left with armature studios and the high turnover rate means Nintendo won't trust retro with a new ip.

Wow, people's reactions are weird.

A studio is making a sequel to their most successful game - massive outrage. Sure, a bigger surprise would have great, but that goes for a lot of Nintendo's teams. I'd much rather have this than another Metroid prime, we already got three of those with very little evolution.

There would be less outrage if it was actually a brand-new built-for-Wii U Donkey Kong.

Maybe a 3D platformer DK. Something like that.

I'm thinking of ways how Nintendo could top this... the only thing coming to mind, is putting X on hold, and have Monolith work on a new Tetris for 3 years.

ITT: I realize people don't want more amazing platformers.

Cue Cartman kills himself video. You guys are all crazy. It's not like it's their last game, Christ. No one was pissed when they announced Metroid Prime 2. My lord.

That's because Metroid Prime 2 was the sequel to an action adventure game with the depth of a game like Zelda with Nintendo production values that was considered one of the best games of the entire generation. Nobody else made games like that. The only game that plays like Metroid Prime was Metroid Prime.
It pushed the medium graphically, mechanically and offered unseen attention to detail in that generation.

Some could say that Metroid Prime was a better action adventure game than any Zelda game released that generation. It's up there with games like MGS2 and RE4.

And here we go with people claiming that any ol' studio can spit out a game with the quality of DKCR.

not a sequel to one of the best wii games!! what will i ever do with my wiiu!

you know, they can make another game this gen and the game will be better for it when they have time with console

Retro themselves said they had a choice between this and Metroid and they chose this.

This wasn't a "Free Retro! They're being controlled and restricted by Nintendo!" moment. The complaining needs to stop.

They were still given a binary choice between doing two IPs they've already done. Perhaps if Nintendo would have given them a chance to develop something new they would have jumped on it.

Regardless, just because they chose it doesn't mean we can't be disappointed.

Being angry about this is kind of stupid. Being Disappointed on the other hand is understandable. How do we make Nintendo understand that we want New IP? That we don't want Metroid, Star Fox, and F zero to ever die.
Scrubs need to buy games next time instead of talking big. The Gamecube had it all in it's first year and the console still fell flat on it's face. I blame Nintendo mostly (purple lunch box and no DVD playback), but we gotta do better or we don't have a leg to stand on.

Look at the good side. If they chose the number 1 gorilla, means that they actually left behind some stuff in the original.

Let it roll, next Retro Game will probably be either a new IP or a new Metroid.

Donkey Kong Country is awesome though. DKCR is one of the best games of the last few years. Why are people upset with this?

I don't get it either. I loved DKCR, Retro did a great job with it, and DKC is one of my favorite Nintendo series of all time. Why is everybody so upset? Is it because you hyped up the possibilities of what they were working on in your own mind?

Because everyone wanted that. Metroid Prime is the kind of game Nintendo rarely makes. DKCR is a type of game that Nintendo makes all the time.

Gotta admit, the thread title made me laugh.

I'm a little disappointed that it's not a new IP, but DKC looks pretty slick. David Wise is doing the OST too.

You don't think DKCR pushed the envelope of what we should expect from 2D sidescrollers?

Retro has 130 employees and they are not doing the score so why cant they be also working on something else?

Retro studios chose to work on this game. So, it doesn't seem like Nintendo forced them onto this project.

Dissapointment I understand but to say Retro isn't talented because they've had people leave for armature studios? DKCR was an excellent game and this was made after all of the talent had supposedly left.

As for whether Nintendo trusts them to do something new or not is hard to tell considering it was Retro who chose to work on this game, so if ya want to blame anyone, it seems like Retro is the one to blame.

Looking at it now, I think a big reason for the reactions is also about the development time. 3 years is a long time for a sidescroller that looks somewhat similar to its predecessor.

Disappointing..It will be a great game I'm sure but disappointing.....

Pretty much my sentiment. I loved DKCR, but honestly I wanted something that would blow me away for this fall. That game came out in 2010. That's three years they've had to whip together a killer new IP or something like Metroid. :( I'll still buy Tropical Freeze but with a tinge of remorse.

I really liked DKCR and I'm happy that a sequel is coming, but seeing that Retro has had 3 years of development time and they were being extremely secretive until now, its really disappointing that the game wasn't something new.

I love the Donkey Kong country series and Retro did a great job on Donkey Kong Countries Return so having them working on the game is just fine with me.

Though I do wish a mod would change the thread title, it's just embarrassing and really childish.

How do we make Nintendo understand that we want New IP? That we don't want Metroid, Star Fox, and F zero to ever die.

By buying the IP games that Nintendo release on the E-shop and posting on Miiverse.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
The only people who are genuinely angry that Retro are making a new DKC game are people who didn't play Returns. It was an amazing game and a David Wise-scored sequel is pure mana from heaven to me. If there is going to be a DKCR sequel then I wouldn't want anyone except Retro working on it.

Anyway I'm sure Retro's other team is beavering away on something else. Remember that they have developed Mario Kart 7 and contributed to other titles over the last few years, they aren't a one project team.

The title of the thread made me laugh with the "fucking" in it. Then I saw the OP's name and laughed again.

Btw bgassasin, tell those maniacs in the in Gaf thread that Retro is definitely not working a next-gen DK. They are aggressively targeting the XBOX/PS3 demographic.

I referenced Retro bgassassin because their project is for the "broader" demographic. It is not DK, LOZ, nor MP. It is extremely visually impressive, or so I am told.

What a joker this guy is. This has been the third time or so that he has been trolling Nintendo fans, and some people still take this jerk seriously.

YES

I was honest to god praying they were working on something else but I loved DKCR, and a new one just makes me so very happy.
