Chiptunes |OT| Not just for games anymore

Woke up this morning to discover a leak of the new Anamanaguchi album has been posted. It's going to be a great weekend. And before anybody gets up my ass for pirating it, I fully intend to buy it, but the vinyl edition won't be out until the end of June.

strange: That Joule stuff sounds like it came right from a DS game, in a good way.

StrikerObi: I don't think anyone is going to get up on you for that.

Had no idea a new Anamanaguchi album was coming out, this makes me very very very happy. Saw them live ages ago as well, terrific show.

maybe tomorrow it rains
Anamanaguchi leak? I'm in.

Will also be buying the vinyl when it comes out. I don't have any chiptune albums on vinyl, so I'm interested to hear it.

Pledged. Was waiting for a pre-order on the vinyl, but that'll do. Did the $80 package with the mindset that you get all their past stuff that I've loved repeatedly for years, so I felt that justified it for me. First time pledge too.

Heard the leak, and it's as fantastic as I had hoped.

A friend of mine makes chiptunes.

He goes by Spriter Gors now but you might know him better as NewAgeRetroGamer if you've heard his older music.

He makes more than just NES music though; he does SNES and Genesis as well, among other things.

This is his latest song.
Mind Game

Check him out, he makes some really good stuff.

My god the new Anamanaguchi album is incredible.

edit: Prom Night is fantastic, holy crap.

Seconded on Prom Night, it might be my favorite song from them. I heard Snow Angels a year ago when they were in Baltimore, it was just Snow then, and a little bit different, but that's my 2nd favorite track on the new album.

This x1,000,000. Prom Night is incredible. Probably will end up as my official jam of the summer. It's absolutely infectious. If chiptune is ever going to go mainstream, it could do it on the back of this album.

I'm also really digging: Eternal Fantasy, SPF420, John Hughes, Space Wax America, and (T-T)b. The speech at the end is somehow touching and hilarious at the same time.

I can also recommend SpriterGors as well. His Purple Coins cover using the VRC6 chip is really well done.

If Kicktraq is to be believed, the Anamanaguchi kickstarter is poised to hit over $500,000. I cannot imagine what they could do with that amount of money. It would be epic. Maybe they could start re-building Furby dolls.

Lots of great artists in this thread. I'd recommend these guys: ヒゲドライバー氏 (Higedriver). They make some pretty sweet tunes. You can download a few of their songs from their website, check em out! Link: http://higedriver.com/

ヒゲドライバー氏 (Higedriver) - Samurai Beat

ヒゲドライバー氏 (Higedriver) - 楽曲 (ukigumo)

I saw group_inou on friday. The promoters were read the riot act due to the crowd surfing/energy.

These guys are dope. HEART and Monkey are some of my favs from them. Never thought of classifying them as chiptunes but I could kinda see it now that you mention it, hah.

I know Hige Driver because he's friends with and did some remixes of a pop punk band from my hometown

Oh snap, his tunes are awesome. Didn't realize it was a one man project either, nice.

Also, I'm hung up on the Anamanaguchi kickstarter. Not sure if I should go for the $20 USB tier or the $20 Poster tier... I'll probably make a decision by tonight, can't wait for it.

Yeah, here's what the band I was talking about said about him (the band actually didn't have a record deal in the states but somehow had a deal in Japan only, curiously.):

Hige Driver, a friend of ours from Japan who specialized in making 8-bit pop punk tunes, did a treatment of the already-electronified "Good Time Island" and "Bad Checks and Car Wrecks"

I've tried making a few of my own chiptunes actually, using LSDJ on a Game Boy! (Well, okay, I emulate it on my PSP because I have no cartridge... :p)

Just finished this today, if anyone would wanna drop me some feedback? (I'm by no means a pro at this lol)

Sounds like it belongs in a beat-em up. Like, if there were a Game Boy version of Streets of Rage or something, this would be playing as I smash people on a bridge or something.

This has got to be a big moment for chiptune as a genre. Anamanaguchi is playing Late Nigte with Jimmy Fallon on Monday to kick off his "video game week". I think they're the first chiptune group to get on TV.

That is pretty big news. Good for them -- I hope it does big things not just for them, but for the genre as a whole.

Can't say I'm surprised. They make simple, accessible pop-rock with a chiptune backing. Not my favorite, but I can't complain if they can act as a gateway drug for the movement.

I just saw Anamanaguchi this past Saturday, this is awesome news for them.

On an unrelated note, I noticed the OP is lacking info on how to make chiptune music or info on good music making software for chiptune stuff. Anyone have any suggestions?

Agreed. Although I haven't heard their new album.

FamiTracker is one method I'm familiar with. Specifically it's for making NES-style music, while I recognize that chiptunes definitely covers a much wider spectrum.

Good idea, I'll edit a section in at some point.

I've been learning Famitracker the last couple years. LSDJ on the Game Boy is also another good, easy to get into tool.

I'm a fan of Nanoloop, but carts can be hard to come by/expensive.

Sorry for not englishing well(I not-so sneakily edited my original post), but this would be a great addition. Also links to tutorials for each one would be great as well.

Your posts read fine friend. No big deal. I learned how to make music in Famitracker through a Youtube tutorial, so I'll definitely include links.

If anyone has suggestions for other programs/tutorials they find helpful, please do. I see Nanoloop from you, Felix. I'll look into it when I compose the section.

Here's a link for nanoloop for the OP: http://www.nanoloop.com

Actually looking at it, there are carts in stock and a lot cheaper than I remember. Might have to snag me one here soon.
