Microsoft officially pulls DRM from Xbox One, announces new policies

I don't see why a lot of you guys shouldn't at least reconsider buying an Xbox One if you were at all every seriously consider buying one. A lot of you gave Sony a second chance on the PS3 after $599 U.S. dollars, taking away backwards compatibility, saying rumble was last gen, PlayStation Networking being down for weeks and Credit Card information being breached, Online passes for their first party games, not to mention online multiplayer you have to pay for now, etc. I own both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and will probably be getting both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. I'm not saying everybody has to get both, nor are they for everybody but at least keep an open mind and stop trying to find shit to blind yourself with just because you want to dislike something. Just my two cents, I know this isn't everybody. You know there are some people with this mentality out there and a handful of them are on this board and more specifically in this thread.

And to the people that are upset about the DRM, Phoebe has your back =p

If you're buying either console day one you should absolutely buy Sony's console as it's region free, cheaper, better, and they didn't try to f@ck the consumer over. If you want to buy an XBox One as well after that it's up to you. But anybody who just flip-flops right back into Microsoft's arms deserves to be bit in the arse post-launch. MS have to see some pain at retail to keep them in check.

People saying "Well Sony already had this plan they were just waiting for MS to announce there's" lol are ya'll still hoping and praying that these lies are true? Because they've been saying they dont and wont have online DRM bullshit since Feb.

With the way publishers have been extracting money from consumers with online passes, day one DLC, microtransactions, season passes, and pre-order bonuses it's great that we won a battle in our favor when it really counted. Good job everyone! Fuck you Microsoft not only for trying to implement this bullshit, but for the assinine PR speak you used to demean our concerns and protests against your console.

Hold on, friend! I'd love to share with you some swell news about the Windows 8 Metro UI! Wait, where are you going?
I don't understand this. They gave people what they wanted, right? Why shouldn't they be praised for their change of heart?

Holy crap, I agree with Alexandros about something. Today truly has been a strange and unpredictable day.

Because it fits the (invented) narrative that microsoft was backed into this corner against their will, and they would totally never do that otherwise.

Sony's console doesn't have launch games i want to play, MS does.

Too little too late.

Microsoft, you've had your chance to make a decision about all this anit-consumer bullsh!t. You didn't take it, but Sony did. You decided to push the boundaries of anti-consumer policies while Sony decided to push the boundaries of play. And now that analysts foresee the XBox One ending up a dead birth you change your mind? How stupid do you think we are? You obviously changed your mind for your shareholders and not for us gamers. You still don't get it!

um, the console hasn't been released yet? how is it too late?

people asked for changes, they got them, and it still isn't enough? when are people going to be happy ffs.

MS can suck my dick for even trying this crap. They need to be penalized for this, so they don't try it again. I think the next xbox slim revision could be "online only", they changed their mind now, why not again in a year or two?

It's a shame that MS let it get to this point with it's bad, confusing PR. I now agree with an earlier sentiment that I commented on saying that the damage has been done. Reflecting on all this crap surrounding the Xbox One, and I've come to the conclusion that the PR has indeed been a disaster.

I'm still on board for the Xbox One, no doubt, but I fear that the hole they've dug will put off more people than before.

Smart move by Microsoft. But as an Xbox 360 owner, I'm still going with PS4 at launch because of cheaper price and better tech. I'll wait on an Xbox One on Black Friday 2014.

You must be a blast when a girlfriend/boyfriend makes a mistake. MS could not have redeemed themselves no matter what it seems. While they still have a ways to go to make me feel content, I certainly am happy they were willing to humiliate themselves in order to revoke their bullshit policies.

It would be the biggest shitstorm of all time if they announced this, changed their mind due to pressure, and then did it anyway after millions bought it, lol.
They're a bunch of sleazy bastards, their recent history proves it in spades. If they can cloak it in some shitty "firmware update" EULA (and make it mandatory in all games starting from a point onwards) they'll go ahead. Sure, it's going to murder them in Europe, Asia and Aus/NZ, but if there's enough of an installed user base (particularly in the US, where the Supreme Court made it very difficult to just sue them) they won't care. After all, what's an Xbone user gonna do with it otherwise? Watch cable TV through a social media overlay? I recommand caution.

Good move for Microsoft

I don't feel like I want to reward these people anyway
But I might get one in the future after price drops

As someone already mentioned, would you be thankful to someone who used to beat you all the time and now wants to hang out like all's cool? Microsoft did a great thing today by backing out on their BS but they don't deserve to be praised, the momentum they'll get back will be enough.
Should we praise Kim Jong-un for threatening the whole world with nuclear bombs and then backing off?

I came home to this news. WOW! I'm shocked. MS fought the internet and the internet won.

I still don't like the fact that Kinect is still required and you still have to have an internet connection for initial installs, so I'm still not sold. Still amazing that they've back peddled this hard though.

My fucking god I have seen some of the worst comparisons in the history of EVERYTHING today.

You decided to push the boundaries of anti-consumer policies while Sony decided to push the boundaries of play. !

By offering more limited experience than with PS3? Lol.

Anyway, good for Microsoft, this was really boneheaded direction and they did good by reversing it. Xbox is the one consumer brand that's beloved and screwing that up would be terrible.

To late? You do know the console doesn't even come out for another five months. Let's just calm down over there cause your hyperbole is set to extreme.

What's the difference? it's not like you are forced to play "kinect only" games. I have never seen the problem with a peripheral on top of my TV that I will rarely use if I don't want to.
I think people are concerned with their privacy or something. It's a stupid issue IMO. My kinect doesn't even get in the way if I don't want to use it. It literally does nothing until called upon. It's no different from a webcam on a computer until you start calling it.

i think ms will probably have optional non kinect bundles eventually. they need kinect to be bundled in the first gen so that developers have an expectation that the market is there to program for it, after the first year games will be far enough into development and the user base is large enough that its still justifiable.

If I do get one, it will not be for a year or two anyway, but I don't see them going back and doing this anyway after such a debacle. It would be suicide.

I don't know what you see in Microsoft's launch lineup, but even so there is much more time to show exclusives before the consoles launch. I'm more interested in the 3rd party games personally. Have Watch Dogs pre-ordered :)

A somewhat valid analogy, albeit an exaggerated one but the point comes across I believe.
I'm glad Microsoft decided to back off their original plan but I don't believe they deserve to be praised because as I said, the momentum they'll gain back will be rewarding enough for all the ambiguity about their policies these past few months.

These are totally fair and accurate analogies.

Already replied to that above. ^

Cheaters are always cheaters;

Anywho; If you trust Microsoft buy the console day 1, if you don't wait a couple revisions and pick it up for $100-200 cheaper in a couple years.

If the Xbox One is getting outsold by the ps4 4-1 by January or February (assuming the PS4 comes out in Nov, which it should), then they will likely drop the price. Microsoft is not going to fall behind by a million consoles right out the gate.

I just don't want it is all, and it wouldn't hurt to have two skus one with and one without as some people don't want it/need it. Same reason i don't have a webcam or anything i rarely use hooked up or out. Hell i don't even have a webcam anymore because i rarely used it.

Er, wrong quote. Sorry.

Because they did it in a way that made gamers out to be the bad guy. Read the press release again. It's one of the moes passive aggressive backhanded thins I've ever seen. Pretty much "Fine! We didn't want to do it anyway! It's gonna suck now and it's all your fault!"

"Candid Feedback" = consumer outrage

You could have chosen more tame analogies, but yeah, you certainly got your point across haha.

Give me a break man, I haven't slept for 24 hours due to work, I meant no harsh words or to blow things out of proportion, will try and edit my original post with a better analogy if I get the chance tomorrow.

Nah man, don't even worry about it. I've made some dumb posts in this very thread, but I'm not gonna bother editing them. Just let it be. ;)

Ho-lee SHIT!!!

Well, I MIGHT see you in 3-5 years MS... If you don't renig on these changes little-by-little over the course of this gen.

But I may not even bother by then. Who knows what the market will be like in 3-5 years... :/

I'm surprised MS made the prudent choice to backpedal after going all in for DRM and anti-consumer used game restrictions with the Xbox One. I view this as a positive step and a significant victory for consumer rights, although it's much too early to tell if this announcement represents a long term return to traditional policies or simply an opportunistic smokescreen for MS to edge back around to their original position.

Microsoft can reverse course, but they can't erase the attempt to drag us down into a bleak underworld where they maintain an iron grip on their customers' recreational practices. I've never trusted the company or felt myself ensnared in the fuzzy manacles of brand loyalty, because it's foolish to think a profit-based entity has your best interests in mind, but this disastrous episode has strongly provoked my mistrust. I bought a 360 with some measure of confidence that my good experience with the original Xbox would be extended into the current generation. Same policies, same expectations. Not so with the Xbox One. For me it will always be overshadowed by Microsoft's initial ambition to plant an always-seeing, always-listening, always-connected piece of itself in my living room, a console that would invert the typical roles of user and device by telling me how I must play my own games.

It is too late for many. Microsoft have shown what they plan on pushing on consumers.

They didn't make this for because of gamers, they did it due to their competitor doing the opposite and affecting their image.

I see people saying they do this due to bad ore order numbers, but has that come from anywhere because I thought they were nearly sold out?

Also has there been any major shifts in numbers from people changing from pS4 to X One?

Vormund

I don't expect any real shift in people who have already pre-ordered a PS4 to cancel that and move to XbOne.

Any new pre orders moving forward though may go to XbOne.

PS4 is still $100 cheaper, more powerful, and doesn't require the camera, so they still have that.
