Mark Cerny speaking on stage about the PS4

I like where Sony is headed. Honest, direct, respectful, logical, well thought out approach.

A console created to best service the gaming community, from developer to end user.

The company it seems is looking to establish a long term mutually beneficial relationship with its business partners, and a trusted relationship with gamers for this console and beyond.

The entire strategy and focus is soothing to be honest, and Mark Cerny in the way he presents, and the information he reveals about past mistakes and the processes to rectify the mistakes gives me confidence in their product.

Even though we might not see it in year 1 or 2, I suspect the gap in consumer offering, and the benefits to game design due to stronger hardware and ease of use will widen significantly, and make the PS4 a much better offering than any of its competitors.

My last 2 consoles are the original Xbox, currently on the Xbox 360 and will definitely make the move to PS4.

Well done for being respectful to your audience!

Love Cerny man. After not really digging the PS3 this past gen, I'm a little shocked at how on top of things Sony seems to be. PS4 really does sound great.

Edit: also, I can't get enough of his way of speaking. It feels like a children's bedtime story, except about games and console development :lol awesome

That is an incredibly intelligent guy, you don't just become someone like Cerny, you are born with that. It's like Carmack too, these dudes might as well be classified Super Mutant.

This is horrible. Please don't downplay the hard work and effort these guys have put into mastering their craft.

hey how much more powerful is the ps4 cpu than the cell?

Depends how you define power; CELL probably still has a significant edge when it comes to running tasks that fully leverage the SPE's, however when running general-purpose code a Jaguar should be able to easily match the PPU core despite being clocked at basically half the speed.

The GPU side and the bus arrangement with the CPU and main memory is where the AMD chip really shines.

I try to imagine what it's like when he gets pissed off but I just can't see it, the most I can picture is him just talking like he usually does with the same tone but just throwing a few F-bombs in there instead.

This honestly reads like PR.

His friend he mentioned is probably Q-games's Dylan Cuthbert. Which if I read between the lines, is how they got involved with some if the PS3s Interface graphic effects.

Ken Kutaragi sat alone in his luxurious office, feet propped on his massive oak desk, and sipped Henri IV Dudognon Heritage cognac from a fine etched crystal snifter. He had put in a long day of fucking up Sony's PR campaign for their new PlayStation 3 console, and he deserved a break. The building was mostly empty, save for some janitors and a few kiss-asses putting in extra hours in a vain attempt to be noticed when an executive position opened up. Susan, his eager and naive young receptionist was one such ass kisser. "Maybe if she ever puts her mouth to better use than just answering the damn phones," he chuckled to himself.

The door to his top-floor office burst open suddenly and he nearly spilled his drink. Charging toward him was Mark Cerny, a bright young programmer working somewhere in the company on game development or some such nonsense. Ken was too busy driving the bus off the cliff to pay attention to what the passengers were doing.

Ken stood to meet his visitor, but before he could react, Cerny had him by the throat. "You fucked up, Ken," he spat between gritted teeth. His breath reeked of cigarette smoke and rage. "The PS3 is a fucking mess. Developers can't get the damn thing to work right and the price is too goddamn high."

Ken wriggled beneath Cerny's iron grip, sweat pouring down his brow. He managed a wry smile, attempting to show a confidence instantly betrayed by his trembling lips. "People w-will work a second job to--"

Cerny's free hand swept through the open air and connected with a smack across Ken's face, his wirey frame giving no indication of the strength within him. "No more bullshit, Ken."

Ken swallowed hard. Fire burned behind Cerny's eye, and Ken knew he meant business. "Mark," he choked, "you don't know people the way I do. They'll happily pay whatever price we set. We're Sony, for fuck's sake. People trust us because people are idi--"

Before he could close his mouth, Cerny jammed the end of a pistol into it. "Be real fucking careful about the next words you speak."

He stared into the endless black of Cerny's dilated pupils. The only sounds in the room were those of his heart pounding and his teeth chattering against the gun's muzzle. Cerny was right to be angry and there was nothing he could say to fix what he had done. So he started to cry. Cerny relaxed his grip and holstered his gun. "Get out of here," he said.

"You want me to leave my own office?" Ken asked, still sobbing.

Cerny took the open bottle of cognac from Ken's desk and shot back a slug. "No Ken," he grinned, "I want you out of my office."

This is the most fascinating presentation I have ever heard about the games industry.

Yep, I share those same sentiments. It's hands down, the best presentation in the industry. I usually love Carmack's keynotes. He's very candid in those. But the amount of transparency in one of the biggest companies in gaming is just nuts.

The part on their overall attitude while creating 1st Party dev tools for the PS3 and how excited they were about the distance they were putting between their knowledge of the hardware and 3rd party is baffling but makes soooo much sense.

Hearing he came from SEGA... you'd think he would have made games for Saturn instead of PSX
He worked for them during the SG-1000/Master System days. Also by that logic he should have been working on the Jaguar. I think it's just that the PlayStation was the most interesting system for him at that time especially when he was working on Crystal Dynamics at the time.

This is horrible. Please don't downplay the hard work and effort these guys have put into mastering their craft.

I think he's saying that anyone can learn the technologies behind game development, it's their vision for what can be done in this industry that is just inherent in them and not something that can be learned.

Absolutely nuts that he admitted to that. But an absolutely important step for Sony to regain the trust of gamers and developers alike.

Could have been interesting, too bad that he isn't exactly a good fit to hold a speech.
Had to stop midway, since I miss about one third of what he's saying because of him constantly dropping his voice towards the end of a sentence, lol

They're still plugging away and growing

I read one tweet that mentioned that they have super high standards for hiring.

They'd probably make even Carmack go through the technical part of the interview. (jk, but only kinda)

The interesting part of this chip being designed in a vacuum is that they'd be just as well off, if not more so, if they had gone the 1 TB/s eDRAM approach. People would have to make the same optimizations they do on the Xone, they'd just have a shitton more bandwidth and there'd be no more secret sauce talk.

It's so awesome that this presentation is available for the public to view. I love Cerny, Shu, House and everyone at Sony who made the PS4 what it is. They are the true saviors of Sony. They deserve all the praise they can get.

I'd hope so given that their job seems to be scouring every nook and cranny of the hardware, to help everyone in the Playstation stable make better games :p

Did ICE start off as a Naughty Dog side-studio btw?

Cerny said that this decision will make games better since developers can spend more time working on the actual gameplay and don't have to struggle with technical barriers.

The biggest problem is that devs would have to decide which piece of data can go into the eDRAM. With the 176GB/s GDDR5 devs can floor it all the time and for all the data. Cerny said that the eDRAM is a solution to save money. I guess he is convinced that this additional puzzle just isn't worth it.

Imminent Legendary Post

You'll go far here, junior.

That was hilarious!

Outstanding.

I had wondered why nobody but Cerny had ever known about the boo-ing engineers. They were never seen from nor heard of again. CoD; Blunt-force (heavy mic) trauma

Came into this thread and was not disappointed.

I quote in full, because it's well earned. If you need free personal training, you have my barbell, you beautiful son of a bitch.

Junior deserves tag already. Great job.

Loved it. I could vividly picture every moment as I was reading - bravo, sir!

Awesome,nice read.

That's some seriously good stuff right there :D

This is the best thing I've read ever.

I don't know what to say other than thanks. You guys literally made my day.

That's certainly the impression he wants to give us.
But he probably is. Can't help but listen to the entire thing.
I've heard in several places that he is, most recently from a guest on one of the Giant Bombcast E3 episodes. They mentioned something about how his knowledge level is just insane and how he knows stuff that it's just not normal for a person to know.

Truly an interesting talk. The fact that he is proud of his accomplishments is hardly detrimental to the experience, he SHOULD be proud. Also extremely interesting to hear the PS3 details.

Yeah, that was Adam Boyes who said that, while he was unpacking his PS4 to show it to everyone from Giant Bomb.

Cerny is giving another presentation at Developer Conference 2013, July 10th, in London:

Let's hope it'll be archived on Youtube as well.

Just watched the presentation...mind=blown.

I've been following Cerny since ~94 but this is the first time that I actually grasped the importance of that man in Playstation ecosystem.
By far the most likable and honest person in the industry.

Holy fuck this is amazing!!!! Kudos good sir, kudos!

Cerny is genius, but I would never disrespect the legend that is Kutaragi. He gave us PS1 and PS2, and at the end of the day, PS3 is brilliant hardware that's given us mindblowing game experiences this gen.

That was a good watch. I do a lot of speaking myself and attend a lot of presentations...I don't think Mark is that great of a speaker overall, he comes across as un-emotional. But what he lacks in emotion, he makes up for in content and how he delivers his message. Glad the link was posted because it was one of the better video's from someone in the industry.

Emotions are not efficient. Not optimized.
