I canceled my next-gen console pre-order. Launch titles do not hype me

No idea when I will jump, but me been the technology whore, prob within the first month lol

Watchdogs and the new COD are the only titles pulling me in

I know there on current gen, but I can't sit there when I know there is something better out there

Unless you're holding out for a price drop, I don't see a point in waiting if you know you're going to get the system at some point. Might as well get it sooner and enjoy all the benefits of it.

I think you have taken a smart and sensible approach

More often than not, the only reason to buy a console at launch is to be a part of the euphoria, the hype, the hypetrain, the big rainbow, those 2-3 frantic days of day pre launch, launch day and day 1 of owning that first next gen console are cool and special.

After the honeymoon you always get people complaining about the lack of games, it has happened since Super Nintendo all the way to today.

Add in potentially faulty hardware, issues with OS and/or online and its best to just wait a few months, see how everything pans out.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Rule of thumb for me is that a console needs to have 5 games I want before I purchase it. Worked beautifully for the past two decades. Kinda felt the burn where it just had Nintendoland, NSMBU,and ZombiU. Plus the launch bugs and issues will have been sorted out by next year.

I stay away from launch, mainly due to possibilities of issues with that first wave of console's hardware. Seems something like that pops up occasionally with first waves. Not many games either. If the PS4 were BC with PS3 games, though, I probably would've bite for launch. Since not, though, I don't mind waiting.

You also gain the benefit of having a system before it gets anything removed as well. In the past exploits were common that were filled in later.

How do I deal with the lack of new games? I play games on my other systems. They don't cease to exist.

Feel the same way, PS4 is definitely a 2014 purchase for me. There is no harm in waiting, it's not like it's gonna get less games the longer I wait. Wii U this year is a maybe, Pikmin 3 and the Wonderful 101 may be the point where I dive in if Nintendo lowers the price by then.

Until then however my PS3, PC and 3DS along with my backlog are more than enough to keep me occupied until next year.

PS4 and Wii U in 2014 are gonna be sweet though.

I agree, that's why I'm sticking with my PC and I'll pick up a PS4 somewhere in 2014 when I feel like it.

Considering most major releases are coming out on PC as well, it's almost silly to buy a new console on launch day. My general rule is to wait until three games come out that you want to play and you can't play anywhere else. By then, at least one of them is at a discounted price (used or because it's old) and the other two are cheaper.

Plus, this way I can wait it out to see how all of the extra bells and whistles on each console work. I'll just do what I did last major launch and watch all of the Streaming Content generated by the new consoles (I'm sure Giantbomb's will be thoroughly entertaining).

My PS+ subscription that's good until 2016 and carries over to PS4 makes my launch purchase a no-brainer, even if I don't end up purchasing a single game for the entire year. "Have you seen the Instant Game Collection collage? Conversation over!"

Except, much like everyone who doesn't own a Vita but has PS+, you can probably just log into the store (via the computer) and add the PS4 games you would get each month. Then, when you pick the PS4 up a year or two later, you have in instant collection of shiny new games to play.

But then you end up buying a bunch of mediocre games that you wouldn't otherwise consider simply because you want to put that new console to use. And my backlog is bad enough as it is, so I agree with the OP.

The launch titles do nothing for me either. Still have a PS4 preordered on Amazon though. I guess I have until the middle of October to decide if I really want it now or if I can wait until Summer '14 to buy one when some good games are out.

Best 400 - 500 $s you've ever saved. I myself will be giving them an year or 2 before jumping in. My PC and 3DS will give me all the next (next) gen gaming goodness I need, until then.

I'm gonna wait until 2015, I feel like then there are enough games too play to buy a system and not feel like you wasted your money due to lack of games.

I have a feeling Bf4 will be the only thing I play on that piece of electronics the first year. Luck has it Nintendo is going to keep me busy until mid 2014 at the very least.

You all can say your going to wait etc etc

Your all on neogaf because your gamers and you will ALL buy one!!

Once them posts start hitting neogaf saying they have it etc etc

You will submit ;)

The only PS4 games that interest me are also available on other platforms... so yeah, unless you really want to play Killzone or a prettier Battlefield/COD/AC4/Watch Dogs, i don't see a reason to rush for a day 1 purchase.

I will wait for 2014 personally.

Not gonna mention Xbox One, even with their backtrack on DRM, i still don't trust them. 100$ more expensive and always-on Kinect aren't helping either.

Yep, eventually I'll have all 3 next gen consoles in my home, not until the must play games are coming out, though. To be honest, the Wii U will probably be as early as this Xmas for me with the heavy hitters on the horizon and potential new bundles or sale prices.

Xbone and PS4 will get the same treatment

Good thing that cross gen titles will be in plenty of supply. I don't think it will be as bad as previous generations.

I didn't even bother making a pre-order to cancel. I've bought a lot of consoles day 1 and I'm almost always disappointed with the launch titles. I'll wait. I have my PC to carry me into next gen.

I'll buy a PS4 when they release Final Fantasy XV.

I didn't bother pre-ordering but launch hype will probably drive me to superhuman effort to have a PS4 on launch day... but I don't understand why :) because I don't see myself picking up any games.

If I can stay rational, I'll probably get a Wii U as there are going to be quite a few games that I'll want.

The money is not saved if you end up spending the same amount a year later; I guess you could invest the $500 in hopes of increasing it, but if you are just holding on to the money it is the same as spending it now.

Price is already as cheap as they can get it, don't expect a price drop for 2+ years on the PS4.

I'm too nervous I'll get fucked over again like I did with the 3ds. bought it a like 2 or 3 months before they announced the price cut. too late to get a price adjustment. and the launch titles don't interest me too much. will wait

I have to wonder if these next gen consoles will have abysmal sales. With the biggest game of the year only available on current gen ( GTA V) and all the big shooters releasing this fall will all be on current gen also so will the casuals upgrade for the added performance? And how many hardcore gamers are intersted in picking up a console who's launch games seem more skewed toward more of the casual audience?

I would've waited until Gamescom or PAX before cancelling. I'm pretty sure both Sony and MS have said they have more exclusives to reveal. Not sure if any of them will be launch titles, but there's no reason not to wait a few more months to get the full story (assuming you ordered from a place which doesn't charge until it ships).

The only launch title that interests me is Forza 5; it looks great, but not enough for me to lay down £429 on Xbone.

As for Sony, Killzone and inFamous are just... bleh. If Sony had have had GT and Uncharted as launch titles, oh how it would be different.

Good for you if that's how you feel :)

It's more of a habit with me, I normally get them on launch (I like new things), even if most launch games aren't always all that.

Why not just get the console now and wait for games to come out? I'm sure there are at least a couple launch games you'd be interested in.

Last gen had pretty mediocre launch lineups from every system, but it was still fun to own them day one.

Honestly, I'm half on the fence about whether I should cancel my pre-order or not. I actually am somewhat interested in a few launch titles, but, there are a lot of other games that interest me more, at least until Destiny comes out.

Case in point, I'd like to pick up.

TLoZ Windwaker HD
Sonic The Lost World
Pikman 3
Wonderful 101
Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remix
FFX HD Collection
Super Mario 3D World
Legend of Zelda Between 2 Worlds.

And on top of all of that, I'm considering getting a new GPU, so I can play FFXIV on max settings, in 1080p. (Right now, for max settings I have to go down to 720p, and I'm still not getting a full 60fps.)

Obviously, I'm going to have to prioritize a couple of these titles over others, since I won't even have enough TIME to play them all this year. However, I question the wisdom of buying a PS4 on top of all of that, and trying to play Knack, Shadowfall, and Drive Club, on top of everything else.

Oh, and yes, at some point I need to replace my PS3, so I can play The Last of Us, without fear of my machine overheating!

O_O;;

Normally, this would be a no brainer. I'd put off the PS4 until January, and pick up the launch titles then. My worry is, demand will be high enough that it won't be a simple matter of, "picking one up in January." I still remember the launch of the original Wii, and how much trouble I had to go through to get one, months after launch.

Granted, if the PS4 launch is late November, it might not be a particularly big issue. So I suppose at this point, I'm waiting to see exactly when it'll launch, and if there's going to be any really big titles near launch that I absolutely must have.

Still, I'm really torn.

Also, seriously, what is up with 2013!?! It felt like, for years, there were only a handful of games coming out every year that interested me. Than all of a sudden, BAM! Must have title after must have title!

I seriously don't understanding how the timing could work out like this.

That's enough of a reason for me. It's probably the only PS4 game I'm buying on launch, haha.

I feel like Watch_Dogs (and maybe Knack) will hold my attention for the launch window anyway. This the the first chance I've ever had to be there day one and I don't want to miss out, games or no games.

Wish they had a JRPG on launch...
I'll wait with the PS4 till a good JRPG comes out.
Hope to see something at TGS.

Never bought a launch day console. It's always been a week later or so.

X1 will be my first preorder. I like the lineup. *shrugs*

the money will be spent on better Q2 2014 games rather than on meh launch titles and cross-gen titles.
