We create "magazine ads" for the hell of it. Now: Two Out Rally

Thanks Ani.

@Android, others, all: I'm starting to realize how important artwork and quality photos matter. Clever text and text effects can only do so much.

Computer effects are generally useless too, unless you are really clever with them. It took a while, but I've learned that hand-done stuff (or even simple photography) looks a ton better. There's also a lot of "effects" you can accomplish outside of the computer... you can distort the images in different ways by the different chemicals you apply to the paper, which paper you use, what you do to the paper, or maybe even what type of photograph you took to begin with. And you can repeat the process over and over. Maybe you just use a Xerox machine repeatedly to create some random stuff that can't be done on a computer (I still have to try this one out).

...Anyway, it just reminded me of some of my favorite ads in this thread, and how they were just photographs of real life things, like that Mega Man 9 one on the sketchbook.

Any chance there's been a gallery put together of the best ones? I know there was for megaman when you launched this thread but I have to admit not reading the middle 30-40 pages of this thread.

Well the first post has sendspace links to the first few months worth of topics. Some have expired, but most should still be there. I'll try and compile a list of my favorites once I get home (I downloaded everything into a different computer).

Only just saw that ad! Love it :p

Come on! Free for all! This thead must live!

Not really the kind of game most GAFfers would play I guess, but I fancied making an ad for Style Boutique. The kind of ad that'd fit into a girls mag like Sugar or Mizz or something.

I wish I had the style to design these ads. I have some great ideas. One for any upcoming sonic game is a casket with sonic sitting up in it and it says under it "if this one is good he's aloud out of there but, if it fails were closing the doors."

So the SMG2 idea didn't pan out then :lol Damn, this epic thread didn't deserve death :(

*bumps again, in the vain hope of inspiring people*

So I'm considering the idea for a revival of sorts. Instead of magazine ads (this thread) and box arts (the weekend photoshop thread), I was considering a video game posters thread, except with some key changes:

1. All images would have to have started off the computer or made by the person.
a. this means no grabbing official artwork from websites
b. however, official fonts would be fine
c. you could take photographs, draw, or create images with other means
d. you could make images entirely with photoshop, but the point of this is to move away from the most creative thing being how you apply the text and the image, so it gets you thinking about the whole more if you're in complete control from the image making to the final product
e. you can also alter your photographs and images once they're in the computer
2. The "due date" for each one would be longer- 3-4 weeks instead of 2-3 days.
3. Poster projects can also be made into magazine ads if you so wish. So if you like the idea of the poster project, but don't have the time to do that sort of work, just make it a magazine ad for this thread.
4. I think something like a reward/vote system should be in place so a "winner" can choose the next topic.
a. however, the winner up to two projects ago can't win again (so you win, you have to wait two turns before you get another shot at choosing the project)
b. i'd like it to be constrained to just one thread like this one was, with the OP continuously being updated
c. if people want new threads for each project, I think there should be a main thread to keep track of everyone's entries somehow

The first project I'd suggest is Kirby: Epic Yarn. I think it's the right sort of thing to get people thinking outside the box as far as materials for image making goes.

I was wondering where this thread went!

I definitely support its revival.
Even though I probably can't contribute, due to the total lack of Phonoshot/pretty-much-everything-else skills

This thread doesn't have to die!

Right now the biggest weakness are the team page screenshots, but this image will actually serve as our [Learn More!] page. I think I'll also add in a mirror of the "Free!" on the other side that says "No Downloads!"

Beyond a few potential wording changes, I'm fairly pleased with it. Thoughts are appreciated, since this will actually be used.

The font looks great in the top headline, but I have a bit of trouble reading the smaller version below your screen caps.

It also might be a little too much of a grid. If you're going to use four boxes like that, why not position them like a baseball diamond? Especially since there is a baseball diamond in the background.

Well I think a revival thread or returning to this one is out of the question. I don't think there'd be another mod nice enough as the one that used to do it to change the thread title whenever a new topic started.

Well, I have a sendspace link to my favorites some several months later. There's around 50. Not every game is represented, and not everyone is represented. It's a very select sampling, and I left a lot of good ones out.

Sorry for the necro/bump, but I took an art class this semester in which I learned Photoshop and Illustrator, and one of the projects I submitted actually drew inspiration from this thread (specifically the MadWorld contest), so I thought it would be relevant to post it here:

I feel kinda too bad I only learned how to do this after this thread has long since been dead...

It's been a long time, but with so much coming this is as good of a time as any to bump one of the greatest threads of all time. I was never that great anyway, but it was always fun. Let's give it another go, shall we?

I suppose we can start July off with PS4.

If Sony doesn't end up using "more ways than one" at some point, this next generation will have been for nothing. Great poster.

I would definitely love for this thread to become a *thing* again. Good times.
Oh wow, it's mik! That tag came from this thread! Truly unbeatable lol

I'm working on one right now, but I'm at a standstill on it. I'll eventually post once I figure out what to do. Join in!

what in the hell.

well, cards on the table: this was my way to 'practice' while i was still learning in college. this thread dying coincided with my graduation.

if this thread was to be revived, i'd like it to change a bit. the photography threads from the ot were a neat way of going about things: longer development period, and rewards for winners. of course, there would have to be limits, like you couldn't win x many times in a row or in a year.

That sounds awesome to me. I'd definitely participate. Most of my work is simple, but I try to play to my strengths lol. There was a ton of actual, legit talent that came through here.

Sounds awesome! Loved this thread when it was alive. I'm all for the revival.
