Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies is rated M (ESRB)/16 (PEGI), gameplay videos

I'm not sure why people think the M rating would have any bearing on whether or not it gets a retail release. We've already had a bunch of M rated 3DS games, and they've done fine.

I'm still hoping that a retail release may be in the cards. We'll have to see what happens when whoever is coming into Capcom USA takes over.

Probably violence and implied gore.

Capcom is clever. Now they gotten a whole new audience wondering what the hell could an M rating result in such game.

Bravo, Capcom, Bravo!

The only way I could realistically see Ace Attorney having an "M" rating would be actually having to search a bloodied and broken body in-game for evidence.

Still though, it's pretty good for Capcom. They must really be upgrading things here. Now that it's rated M, who knows what else they'll be able to do.

According to JoyStiq, they got a little info from Capcom for the rating:

"Due to the nature of the various crimes and storylines in this latest title in the series, ESRB deemed the title an M," a Capcom representative told us.

I'm all hype for this game but gutted because we will not get a physical release....
not to mention AAI2 not released at all

about the M rating, I think it's just the result of a little more graphic cases? we will see.

Well, the three cases they've shown off so far don't see all that different from the AA norm. I'm guessing the last two cases escalate matters, then.
Yeah, for the most part, the last case or two tends to be the most serious/intense compared to the other cases in each game, so it's possible that's the part of the game that caused the rating.

Pretty interesting, I can't imagine they intended to get that rating. The games were always pretty dark though.

I just bought the origional DS game. I am looking forward to trying it out on Friday :)

You're in for a treat! I recommend a good non-alcoholic beverage and snack, though, because sometimes during the investigation parts your mind will wander off due to boredom and food helps a lot with that. The court parts are well worth the occasional suffering, though!

This just makes me wonder even more how Uncharted keeps getting T ratings...

The first one deserved it. I remember being shocked with how much blood came out from head shots. The ESRB let them get away with it due to the blood being "black". The second and third toned it down.

The only court part I didn't like in the original was when there's nothing to contradict and you either have to press everything or go through the whole testimony 2 (or maybe even 3?) times to advance the story. Other than that, the game is pretty flawless. I loved investigating myself, but all my friends that got into the game all found the investigating to be more boring than the actual court stuff so I guess this is up to personal taste

Whenever a game uses "middleware," I expect mediocrity. Just see how poor TLOU looks.
personally holding out hope for the physical release. I would pass otherwise, the ONLY reason I may do digital is because I have that $30 credit from buying but FE:A and SMT IV

If you've played any of the AA games without investigating any ladders you see in an environment, or showing your badge to anyone, you've been playing them wrong, I'm sorry. :(
I got the ladder reference, but I don't remember anything significant about showing your badge to anyone.

Oh, and really surprised this hasn't been posted yet:

I just can't see how this game and Saints Row 4 or GTAV get the same rating.

There's something wrong with our rating system.

I never thought I'd see the day where a simple ESRB rating made me even more hyped than I already was for an AA title.

I heard back from my source at Capcom. In Germany, PW5 seems to be getting an USK rating of 12. Rating process is not finished though. Nothing is set in stone so don't quote me on this one (yet).

Btw. that means the localisation is indeed as good as finished, because the USK always play the full game before it can be rated.

And while it seems contradictory, the USK usually have less problems with violence, profanities, drugs and innuendos than other countries.
Of course they have huge problems with realistic games, that gives you no other options than using violence and depict said violence in a very gruesome way.

But in AA you're not hurting other people yourself, it's not very realistic, it doesn't promote or glorify violence and the overall atmosphere is usually rather happy and not depressing. But I guess AA5 will be indeed darker overall and the USK 12 rating is also the highest rating any AA game got in Germany.

100% anticipation doesn't begin to describe how psyched I am for AA5!!! Can't wait to see Phoenix's return to the courtroom. If my Japanese was at that level I would import this and a 3DS just to play it early :) Need to get back to the studies.

Have you played it? It sounds like it really has gotten loads darker. Went all the way up to a Cero C in Japan from the A the series had been. Makes me think it will fit right in with those games.

LOVE this series but really don't want to have to buy a 3DS just to play it... An ios release would be great!

You could always buy a 3DS for all the other great games it has.

To be fair, I think most of the series was B except for JFA and AJ, which were A. Still, no denying that the game must be a bit darker if they're bumping it to C.

I wonder if maybe one of the murders gets fully animated? That could push it over the top.
