No, this is wrong. You could easily build GPUs with DDR3 but we don't know how this would turn out in terms of graphics. We don't know the performance hit. And it will also tell us only remotely how this would translate into differences in consoles as the architecture is quite different because of the APU. Also we don't know what differences make ESRAM and the move-units. Don't expect wonders, sure, but they don't build it this way for nothing.

What? Of course you can put crappy RAM in anything if you want but the fact is all high end cards come with GDDR5 for obvious reasons. The ESRAM is puny amount and still slower than GDDR5. Sure it will help with performance but it's a band-aid solution.

GTA 5 runs on a measly 512mb of ram, how is 5gb of gddr5 not good enough.

The fuck is wrong with people.

The speed is not especially crucial, it's the amount of ram. Devs like more ram way more than fast but tiny ram. Like you want with everything that computes.

I think I saw someone in this thread trying to say that DF knew about the 8GB ram increase in PS4 but I believe that was EDGE and only EDGE that reported on a increase in ram right?

yep. I think Gies/polygon was trying to imply that DF knew about it too but didn't publish anything publicly... LOL

So DDR3 is crappy ram now? Man, this is getting ridiculous, really... I don't say DDR3 is as good as GDDR5 for games but the comparison itself is invalid as it does not translate 1:1 on consoles. Accept this or don't.

Negative Xbox One Rumor = 100% true = no source needed

Negative PS4 Rumor = never true = even with source the sites are "dumb"

Positive Xbox One Rumor = something is still wrong = more sources are needed, site posting are MS fanboys

Positive PS4 Rumor = 100% true. best thing EVA! = no source needed

Hmmmm.....seeing a pattern.

And after all of this....It's been accurate every single time. Only once has positive MS story end up being true and that was the self- publishing bit. Everything that has been reported about Sony, that credible sources have verified, has been true as well.

The guys at DF are journalists, or at least they try to be so I'm hoping they got at least two sources before posting the article. After all, it's their day job and I'd hope they're pretty damn good at it. They of course get things wrong, just as insiders get things wrong....

No offense intended, but even professional journalists sometimes have a hidden agenda, and to be clear, I'm not saying there was one with DF or EG. Just think of the image Fox News has with politics, it's not always seen as straight fwd.

So, this started out as a rumor that the ps4 had less RAM for games than the xbox one at launch, which then had to be revised to an equal amount of RAM between the systems, from a site which seems recently to be focused on spinning good pr for microsoft and bad pr for sony in this, microsoft's time of troubles. And sony still has not commented on amount of RAM, so it's gotta go under rumor for now, right?

But the ps4's gpu will still be 50% faster than the xbox's gpu? And the RAM will still be superior?

If anything, it seems like a smart strategy to start out with the same amount of memory reserved as the xbox, in case they end up needing it to match features.

In light of the cross game chat fiasco in the current generation, this seems like a case where leaving things open/waiting to see what the competition does is the right choice. Hard to see this as a bad thing if they can open up more memory for game developers later, assuming they don't end up using all 3gb for something crazy in the os.

Have you guys been canceling your preorders?

It's not just a band-aid solution. It's an upgrade on a similar embedded RAM solution the 360 has, that helped developers a lot in the past with post-processing.

Also, GDDR5 is much better than DDR3, but not as dramatic as some people are making it out to be.

In the first couple of years, we won't really notice much of a difference in multiplatform games in any case.

Sometimes lol.. Journalists repeatedly come bottom in trust polls, right next to politicians

DDR3 is crappy and slow.

Why do you think Nintendo and MS rely on Embedded RAM? It's too speed things up.

It is pretty crappy for graphics rendering that's why zero high end graphics card use it but a lot of $50 low end graphics cards have DDR3. Even MS realized it's not good enough that's why they bolted on ESRAM.

Sure they do this to speed things up but calling RAM that computers nowadays in almost every system is off. And to add it's not only ESRAM, we still don't know what the move-engines do exactly. But either way, just comparing specs point by point doesn't tell you the whole story on how the "system" will all parts together will perform.

It was not good enough last week when Xbox One only have 5 GB available. Microsoft is behind, making box for non-gamers, bloated OS and not forward thinking and box already obsolete by awesome 7GB of PS4 super duper RAM.

Now that PS4 might have just 4.5GB, of course that is plenty for next gen. Sony is just being forward thinking so they can match Xbox One features by allocating more RAM for OS. Though to be clear Sony never copy Xbox and everything they did is better (even though they follow MS on everything from cross game chat, UI, achievements, and on-line games behind pay wall. Of course, the pay for on-line is now OK, because Sony need money for R&D and make things better, Microsoft on the other hand is greedy as fuck and ruin gaming).

I have a lot of problem with Xbox One especially the lack of BC and their unclear message on DRM, but seriously do some of you guys actually read what you write.

System RAM requirements and GPU RAM requirements are two completely different things.

DDR3 is fine for system RAM, it is not fine for GPU RAM.

DDR3 does not have the bandwidth per a pin needed to get high bandwidth without having a very wide bus, GPUs need lots of bandwidth, the performance hit would be very large!

The SRAM only helps for things that can fit into it and the "move engines" are nothing really of note, they are just there to try to help the system move things between the SRAM and main RAM.

As I said we will see how it really turns out. I see an advantage for PS4 but I don't know how much it will really be and by now nobody really knows, except devs working with both systems and even they only get an idea of what the advantage really is.

That's the argument people used when they learned Wii U has 2 GBs of RAM.

It's expectations vs. reality that's the problem. But frankly I don't see what's so bad here anyway so *shrug*

You seem to be forgetting the PS4 also has a much better GPU. The performance gap between the 7850 vs 7770 is quite large on PC, and that's with GDDR5 on both. DDR3 on budget video cards absolutely cripples them.

512 mb sure carried the PS3 pretty damn long.

Yes? And it has held back the industry for far too long.

Devs literally having to cut things like weapon holstering because they had no ram left. Or smaller maps. Gimped textures. Endless loading screens and loading cells. etc etc etc.

Cmon man, the Wii U is facing consoles with clear cut advantages over it. What's facing the PS4 that has such an advantage or an advantage at all, in the console sphere?

I'm pretty sure its been confirmed by rockstar that GTA 5 will run a lot smoother than GTA 4.

What about RDR, not only is that game vast its also beautiful to boot, all while running on 512 mb of ram.
Do we want another gen where only super high budgets and limitations can create graphics like that? TF2 never got updates on the consoles because there wasn't enough RAM for the extra weapons and games like Planetside 2 are impossible. I can put an awesome looking FMV into a PS1 game, but I want a good looking game without all the limitations.
