Sony: Gamescom to be focused on the PS4's lineup

I hope they confirm some of the indie stuff they showed at E3 as launch games. I want Mercenary Kings on there day one. Other than that, the only thing I 1000% want out of GamesCom is release date announcement.

I really want to see some new games. Most will be non-launch year one titles but whatever. I'll be coming into some money soon and I would like some more choices to preorder from. I also want some firmer release dates announced for future titles.

Please be excited.

Thanks for the hype injection, Mortimer. I'm honestly baffled by people, who think there won't be any PS4 game teases/announcements at Gamescom. We already know of a handful of studios working on PS4 projects for the past 2+ years. We know that we've only seen 5 out of 20 exclusives for the first year of the PS4's lifecycle, and we've had different members of Sony tease that there are still game announcements coming later this year. Come on, guys...

Plus David Cage and Cerny talked to Suzuki recently. Quantic Dream/Sony/Suzuki/Cerny partnership for Shenmue III confirmed. Our wildest dreams ("our" meaning you and me and no one else lol) coming true.

As much as I like QD, I'd rather they continue to do their own thing while Suzuki assembles his own team for Shenmue III, were it to happen. I'd like to see a lot of the people who worked on the first two games return, to ensure the essence of Shenmue is retained and all that jazz.

Ha, no... nothing SE related that i know of.

In fact when it comes to games the rumor mill is dry. Like bone dry. Even talking to other gaf "insiders" it seems like no one has heard anything all summer in regards to games.

There are plenty of tech rumors though. Rumors of a microsoft upclock that seems shaky but is atleast plausible. Rumors about similar things for the PS4 but much later in its life (thuway I believe discussed this already). But the thing with rumors like these is that a lot of it is FUD. We've already been through xbox one going to 12gbs which wasn't true. The ps4 using 3.5gbs for the OS which wasn't true. There's just so much misinformation out there, most of it likely intentional, that it's hard to get out here in front of GAF and say "this is what i'm hearing, now ban my account because it's likely complete horseshit."

The PS4 will have surprises, this I know as fact. The Xbox one will have surprises, though one of them (indie game self publishing) already came out. I don't know of anymore as fact though... but I find it hard to believe they won't.

As for the vita... just got confirmation that nothing they were planning on showing was pulled. SCEE is selling the event as PS4 games because that will be the main focus but it's not the singular focus. There will be a vita presence. From the sound of it, a fairly strong one.

GAF, you guys need to stop freaking out over every little piece of news. I mean all of this started from a facebook post that is basically an advertisement - not from someone actually working on the show. It's like every little piece of info for any system is life or death for that system. We have a long way to go... even with struggling platforms like the vita and Wii U. No one is going away.

If you really can't see for yourself that Vita is in a much, much, much deeper hole than either of those platforms ever were, there isn't really much point in having this conversation. It obviously is to anyone who pays attention to sales and the software lineup.
If you can't tell the difference between selling 70-80M units and 30-40M units then there isn't much point in having this conversation either.

Okay, nine more years on the market. Still only gets to 24M WW even if it manages to maintain last year's sales.
You mean last year's pretty weak sales? The sales from a predominantly $250 global MSRP with only a few months of one region seeing any price cut at all? When those get within 80% of the low end I suggested maybe 30-40M isn't so unrealistic, now is it?

I'm perfectly capable of seeing why so many GAFfers love it, but it's a completely misconceived product that will never have any kind of relevance outside a narrow niche. Whatever sales come after the Western price cut, assuming there is one, will continue to prove that.
Sure thing boss. Great bit of logical debate you walked out here. It was misconceived in the way releasing a handheld post-smartphone revolution was misconceived, sure, but so far Sony seems to be making money on it. That's kind of the point to a product, right? Also, most handhelds are niche devices. Hell, most consoles are niche devices. Only the most dominant gaming devices of all time climb out of the niche gamer corner into the mainstream.

The Vita could very likely run a business model essentially similar to the Gamecube and much like the Gamecube it would have a compelling software library and make the company delivering it a tidy profit. When did that become a horrible outcome?

I think people were just misinterpreting the guy who said it was going to be a vita show.

"It's all about momentum. It's about showcasing PS4 in all its glorified beauty and it's not just the console. It's about the titles, it's about the games, it's about the independent titles. It's also about PS3, it's also about PS Vita. We blew it out of the park this E3 with PlayStation 4 but PS Vita has so much more to go, we've got so much more love to show at the showcase and I can safely say Gamescom is definitely going to be a PS Vita show, so you'll see."

I think he meant that compared to E3, vita will have a much much bigger presence at gamescom (didn't mean that there wouldn't be focus on the ps4 lineup). There was little to no focus on the vita at E3, but the gamescom conference is going to have some good/big reveals for vita titles (has that big title Shahid was hinting at been revealed yet?).

Drek, the problem is that Vita would spend seven or eight years of that ten year lifespan as a glorified PS4 accessory.

That depends on how it sells and how Sony markets it, now doesn't it?

If it gets the price drops, memory price drops, etc. that it needs to live in a more mainstream price it could well see a low but not horrible hardware sales rate. It will have unity support shortly, has hardware technologically similar to current higher end smartphones and tablets, and by all accounts has a quite friendly development environment.

I think there is a very real possibility that it will see continued software support over the next 7-9 years from a wide variety of developers, just not from the AAA establishment. Small studio/indie games are still good games and the move towards self publishing will only broaden and empower this segment of the industry. The Vita is an easy choice for developers within that niche with it's proven digital distro platform, high tie ratio, and oddly digital heavy skew on sales period.

In short - I'd argue that spending it's last 5-6 years as the handheld equivalent to Humble Bundle/Steam Greenlight/PSN could (over the next 5-6 years) include some pretty significant titles, and that it is in fact decently well positioned to do just that.

Because of opportunity cost.

Kind of crazy that Sony has been able to run a tight ship in regards to game leaks this year. They're usually really bad about that.

Anyway at GC I'm hoping we see something like LBP3 cross play for PS3/4/Vita, some gameplay from The Order, MP for Shadow Fall, and either SSM or GG's new IP.

I could see Vita getting a second Uncharted, LBP3, and a price cut.

Fuuuucccckkkkkk

I'm hoping GC and TGS bring the games. Sony really seemed to hold back at E3 and now that the DRM and indie policy reversals have happened at MS it's time to bring the big guns out.

I just watched the extended cut the other day. Don't know if this is a hint, however.

Must keep hype to a reasonable level. We know games are coming, but are NEW games coming? ;P
Also are they saving it for TGS or is the dream dead. ;_;

If you're talking about TLG, I don't see it showing up before TGS. GC will be focused more on Western stuff and TGS will be where Japanese stuff gets shown off. I expect we'll get another look at FFXV, Deep Down, and TLG at TGS.

I think SSM or GG may show off one of their new IPs at GC. It would be a good time for it.

Oh fuck yes please.

Almost forgot about that game. If no gameplay at least new screenshots are very, very likely.

And enough to get me excite for the event. :)

Well that and a release date for the PS4.

Seeing as they have about 9 new IPS left to reveal for the PS4 (for the first year), my bet is yes. Some of them are definitely going to be revealed here.

I'm hoping for Sony Santa Monica's new game (no idea if it's another God of War or new IP) and Guerilla Games new IP to be revealed.

Naughty Dog's game (no idea if it's a new IP) is pretty much guaranteed for VGAs now.

The stars are out tonight :).

Famous is right, the rumor mill is pretty empty. The only real rumors floating around at this point are about random upclocks / downclocks, yield issues, etc. Pretty boring stuff that contradicts itself. Posting about it is like playing with a shotgun because you pretty much fire back in your face if it doesn't pan out.

As for my prediction on Gamescom:

Most Likely to Happen:
1. Vita Price Cut
2. More Killzone Shadow Fall (including a multiplayer showcase)
3. Media Molecule's new IP teased
4. Drive Club updated build
5. Gran Turismo 6 trailer
6. PS4 Menu / UI shown off. Pretty much all your questions answered in video form.
7. Atleast ONE reason to give a fuck about Move / PS Eye
8. Little Big Planet 3
aaaaaaaaand
9. PS4 Release date :)

Somewhat likely to happen:
10. Guerilla's New IP Shown (but this would be better saved for the VGA)

Cool. Hopefully they announce 2-3 new titles instead of dedicating the entire event to Killzone, #DC, Infamous, etc.

At Gamescoms in the past they've previewed the following year, not just up to Christmas. So hopefully they will show sneak peeks at next years titles (and hopefully most of those are now PS4)

Exactly.

I think if this mobile revolution has taught us anything it's that... When people want to do the big gaming, they'll commit time to it.

Vita is for the commute, Vita is for out in the garden/in the park. I do not want to play a 60 hour epic and graphically stunning game, because - it's not pretty when it's so tiny, and it's too long to stay on the bus.

Persona 4 Golden.
Well over sixty hour game played one hour at a time.

I didn't buy the Vita for short games to kill time. Could have saved a fortune and gotten Tetris on the Gameboy if that was the case. The PSP sold 78 million and two of its most popular games were GTA and Gran Turismo selling 4+ million each.

The main event for me really is the release date, whatever new game if any they announce, are probably far off anyway.

If its something like mid October this place will go bananas just like with 399 and "no DRM" at E3. It would be another one-up on Microsoft

If it is December, i think will be disappointing. November is meh, neither good or bad.

So that is what i am looking forward to.

It makes sense to focus on PS4 and not the PS3 because they have to entice people to adopt a new platform.

Thankfully they don't have a handheld console on the market, so they can spend all the time on PS4.

I hear you. I was getting caught up in it myself, especially with the whole PS4/OS RAM rumor, but then I saw some of the recent slides for The Order and I realized how absolutely ridiculous I was being.

Seriously, next-gen is going to be amazing, I just think many are looking to justify their pre-ordering/not pre-ordering stance so that they can say they made the best decision regarding how they spent their money and where they placed their trust. The thought process makes sense, but it quickly becomes fetishized to the point where people lose track of reality and begin to look at console choice as an end-all, be-all, life governing decision. It simply isn't.

I am one of the only gamers who was disappointed with Sony e3 2013 showing. SCE is my favourite publisher. They promised 20 games for the first year and they only show 1 new game @ E3. WTF??? 75% of the announcements at E3 did not do anything anything for me and the one thing I feared the most, (pay to play online) came true. They best E3 for Sony was E3 2009 where they had a bucket load of games.

I really hope SCEE can rectify the lack of NEW FIRST PARTY game announcements @ Gamescom.

Insiders, will Gamescom be a better showing for SCE WWS?

Insiders have stated they have no idea (or are not letting much on if they do). There are 15 exclusive announcements left (of ps4 games coming out in the first year) 9 of those are new IPS. I think there are going to be some really good announcements.

1 of those games could be saved for the VGAs (if ND is part of their studios with a game in the works that will release within a year of PS4's launch), so that leaves 14 games (published by Sony) that could be divided up between gamescom and TGS (unless they're saving some announcements for later). Who knows, they might have some third party surprises in store as well.

I'm not trying to stir the pot, but you do realize that Sony's best teams will not release a flagship game during launch year (which leads me to believe Shadow Fall is being made by the B Team). Sony's first party efforts have always been about maximizing the quality of visuals from the hardware, and launch year is not enough time to understand the intricacies of the machine.

There was an interview with Cerny, where he commented Naughty Dog would refuse to release a title at launch because there wasn't enough time to study the hardware to its potential.

You know what Sony's firsty is capable of. To think that they are sitting on their asses is a foolish endeavor :).

Good. I know VitaGAF was hyped over this being Vitacentric, but that ship has sailed and they have a much bigger product to hype. Hopefully they drop a couple bombs and don't just show more Killzone
