Buying a PS4 game on smartphone activates console, downloads game and shuts it down.

Yeah, they alluded to this in February and I was wondering if the app would be ready for launch. Goes a long way toward alleviating my issues with download times.

I see myself moving more and more toward the digital side as the generation progresses.

Thats crazy. How does it turn on... When its off!?

It doesn't turn off by default. Unlike the PS4 has a low power mode it goes into where it turns off most of its functions and goes to 'sleep'. In this mode, it consumes a negligible amount of power, but it is not completely off.

I'm more excited for features like these than I am in better graphics.

Next gen is gonna be convenient as shit.

I hope it can disable Bravia Sync when using it do my TV doesn't turn on when the PS4 does.
The PS3 doesn't do it for the automatic updates. I doubt the PS4 will. I'm speaking from personal experience as I have a Bravia hooked up with my PS3 (with Bravia Sync) and the automatic updates never turn on the tv.

Cool feature... I already buy games at work and put it on download queued for when the PS3 wake up (Plus feature) download and install.

When I get home I can play my new game :-D

Why does it need to wake up? Didn't they state that the system is in some kind of always on low power state? To download a game this would be sufficent, no? Even the WiiU can do this.

Perhaps he explained this without some details for it to be perfectly clear though.

Why are people so shocked about it? PS3 already does that for automatic updates if you have PS+ (i.e. wakes the console to download patches), so it's only logical this functionality will get extended going forward.

Oh so in the low powered mode it can still do it. Saving power for stuff like this.

I expect everything to do this, honestly, and I'll appreciate everyone who does.

I already did this with Mark of the Ninja DLC on the Steam app the other day. Felt like I was living in the future.

Good stuff.

Always online.

Sounds like always online.....

You guys realize this means it's "always online".
Which part of the Xbone/Adam Orth Always-Online fiasco confused you? Because you seem to be confused.

Its OK. We can help.

He said it wakes up to START the download and then goes back to sleep again, so its probably just for few seconds?

this just means it can be always online if you want it to be. my ps3 can be always online if i want it to be. some of you guys are so cute with your overreactions. this is an awesome feature though, will be much more willing to buy digitally if i can buy the game at work and have it downloaded and ready to go by the time i get home :)

While in the literal sense, yes this is true, it misses what the majority of Gaf means when they get upset about "always-on" consoles. It's not that the consoles are always connected. Few have issues with that. It's when that becomes a requirement to use it or play games does that become an issue. At this point, this is just a feature. You can turn it off. You can't with stuff like the original plan for Xbox One.

This feature sounds awesome. It's something I've wanted on 360 ever since the online marketplace and queue was released. The idea that I can be reading a review for an indie game I never knew about when I'm away from my console, hit a button, and it'll be there when I get back ready to play is great.

I can almost do it now on PS3, where via the SEN store on my phone I can purchase an item and then queue it up on my downloads list for my PS3.

However it will only download the item once my PS3 turns on, either at night during it's PS+ update time or I believe right away if my PS3 is turned on at the time.

It's a good feature to have the ability to download right away even if the console is off.

Yah, but like you say, it's just a queue from the SEN website. A lot of time would be saved it pushed the download. Remote play is active on both of my PS3's. If the coding is there for that, it would have been nice for a wake on lan trigger for purchased games.

Nice. Very convenient.

I would imagine that the same will be true for Xbox One too.

I expect all consoles's 'smartphone app' to eventually be able to :

- party/voice chat
- browse/purchase from digital store
- integrate with respective streaming services to watch your friend's game stream
- remotely control your console ( eg. start a game remotely while walking home so that the game is all loaded and ready to play by the time you're on the couch )

Jesus H Christ@ the people in here bringing up always online. Did that whole issue really go that far over your heads? Apparently it did.

They finally bring the option people have been wanting for a long time and now some only come to say "Sounds like always online" as if it was mandatory and a bad thing we're getting this feature... I won't even try to understand.

Cool, glad to see stuff like this. Also hate knowing there is a big download waiting when I'm out and about, small stuff like this ends up being very convenient.

Im assuming that if your not synced to the internet, your download will be queued until it is?

I kind of want to know this because my TV controls the power source of my systems.

Presumably, but if you're physically cutting the power on your PS4 when you're not using it you will be losing out on a ton of features and conveniences. No fast wake from sleep, no instant resume of your last game, no automatic updates of patches and firmware, no immediate downloads of games bought remotely, etc, etc.

I will love this when I'm at school or work and want something downloaded by the time I get home or at the very least started.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
What kind of sorcery is this from Sony?

Fuuuuuuuck.

Will this be like a PS4 app for my phone?

I plan on having two PS4s when all is said and done. I wonder if it'll allow you to select which one you want it to go to, or even both.

My wallet shivers in fear.....

Seriously though, I have the worst control sometimes. If an app is gonna make it that easy to buy games, I gonna be screwed.
