Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Wait they want to target kids with this thing and at $129? Who the fuk did they think they were targeting before I mean besides the man-children here isn't kids the main demographic nintendo targets anyway?

Oh and 3D is dead there is no point in making it a necessary or even a niche feature for developers when the hardware inventor itself has ditched it. Nintendo is so proud they just won't admit they should have called in the DS2 at launch but they rather try and save face with this thing.

Eh, I kind of like it. It's different. However, now more than ever Nintendo needs to begin implementing an account system. I'd like to be able to use this system as a capture device but still be able to transfer games between it and a 3DS XL.

Most of the time I play my portables at home in a comfy chair anyway, so the clamshell design isn't something I'd miss. Besides, wasn't the clamshell causing screen issues for the 3DS anyway? Who honestly carries around their systems in their pockets? If I'm going out I would take it in a carry case inside my backpack.

And I don't see how holding this would be uncomfortable, if anything it should be more comfortable due to the weight being evenly distributed and you can easily rest it on your lap.

However, I don't see why they wouldn't make it a tablet and just divide the screen in half for the upper and lower screens.

Oh, and someone tell the parents that it's not a Wii U controller, it's not a Wii add-on, it's a standalone console which looks a lot like a Wii U controller, the latter of which is not a standalone console but a controller for a standalone console, and that neither the Wii U nor the 2DS are Wii add-ons.

That'll clear everything up.

Lol. This is a big problem with Nintendo's products right now, yet they keep making the same mistakes. I thought Reggie was supposed to be some sort of marketing genius. How could he not have shut these horrible naming conventions down earlier?

...but there was nothing wrong with the first 3ds I have a 5, 7, and 9 year old that play it just fine.

They just want to weasel out of paying for 3d components and a bigger screen so they have less overhead this was their year 5-8 mini/basic model that they rushed ahead of time to make up for the Wii u.

The 2DS is the perfect handheld for the 4 to 10 year olds (but also for other's who prefer/ed the smaller screens to the 3DS XL - du to a sharper image).

Parents will go crazy for this thing this holiday season. This is gonna sell a shitton!

The 3DS won't even be an option anymore. I think Ninty will be phasing that one out, so that in the future there will only be the 2DS and 3DS XL, which makes perfect sense.

Great post and I agree. My dilemma as a Dad of a 4 year old was how do I afford to get he and I into the 3DS ecosystem as cheap as possible and without the 3D. I was waiting for something like this. This Christmas is going to be great. I will be getting at least 2 of these if not 3. It depends on how interested my 13 y/o daughter is in one. From the "hands on" articles I have read, this thing is very comfortable to hold as well. It all sounds like win to me.

Good point. And Nintendo is not known for their good marketing, this might as well turn out as a distaster, purely because the consumer does not get it, as it also did with the WiiU.

What the hell are they thinking with their name branding?

Besides that, I still don't get the 'it's for kids' comments? It's just cheaper and has less possibilities, I don't see anything wrong with that for adults?

What's wrong with having a cheaper alternative on the market?

I really hope they have a Japanese release for the 2DS so I can save a bunch of money by buying that instead of a Japanese 3DS.

Please Nintendo of Japan, I need my SRW UX and Inazuma Eleven fix!

Coming back and looking at it again, thinking about ti a bit...still looks like a good move for Nintendo.
The bafflement and ridicule in here is ludicrous.

Not really, it's like a ~less worse~ move than the Wii Mini, but still an odd and ridicule-worthy move.

My prediction is that this console will not sell, be produced in limited quantities compared to the current 3DS models and be highly sought after in ten years by collectors because of arcane hardware feature only found on this particular model.

Well pre-ordered the white/red one for myself, I don't care what anyone says - I think it looks quite nice and will be a perfect coffee table/occasional car/train trip device.

I very much doubt that. History suggests that lower priced Nintendo handhelds fly off the shelves, and it's coming out on Pokemon Day.

We need a new IT PRINTS MONEY image.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say I like this.

- I want a 3ds because of its game library (Atlus titles, Nintendo titles, etc), not because I want to game on the go. Thus, I'll be playing it at home.

- As someone who sold their old 3ds, the 3D really was not that impressive to me. The actual 3D was pretty, of course, but I didn't like how sensitive the angle was you had to hold it at. I found myself playing in 2D (or 2.5D) most of the time.

I'm dead broke, so $130 is still super expensive for me and out of my disposable income... but once these things hit the second hand market?

I'll wait for the 2DS XL lololol.

I really only play my 3ds at home, but the controller layout seems weird to me.
And yeah no second stick, what is this 1998?

No hinge = less breakable parts
No 3D = no eye damage

That doesn't qualify something as 'for children'. You can get eye damage at older age aswell.. and has it been proven scientifically that chilren's eyes get worse from 3D?

And the build structure? Lol.. thats just a design choice.

Unbelievable.

1. Screen size downgraded to original 3ds... smaller than DSi XL. Especially bad for kids.

2. Looks very uncomfortable to use, with controls in weird places relative to the screen and still no second stick. Again, especially bad for kids with small hands.

3. No longer portable, can't be closed.

Even if you wanted a 2ds would you want one with a smaller screen than the DSi XL, incredibly ugly, with terrible controls?

No, you want a cheap device that can play pokemon X & Y. I mean, not you as in a gaffer, but parents of children that want the new pokemon thing.

Yeah, if they make a 2DS CPP, how on earth is it going to work?

Also, lol at the "it'll be uncomfortable" comments. I don't judge comfort for myself based on looks. For all I could tell visually, the Wii U gamepad was going to be mighty uncomfortable; but it ended up being even more comfortable than the Wii controller (though it still pales in comparison to the Gamecube's).

Woah, you're a genius. I've been wanting to buy a Japanese 3DS so I can import.... this could be the perfect opportunity.

I assume devs are still going to make their 3DS games 3D-ready/compatible first? Thinking about it a little, it seems lame of Nintendo to have third parties continue to expend resources on 3D in games and only give consumers the option to opt out of it. Why even make a 3D system in the first place? I have so much mixed feels about this....

The design means that Nintendo will manufacture this at a cheaper cost. I have a feeling that, ridiculous reactions here in GAF notwithstanding, Nintendo will make a tidy profit for this and I agree with the person from the previous page saying that this may be their replacement for the OG 3DS.

And people who are wondering who would buy this seems to have forgotten the Game Boy iterations, specifically the "Play It Loud!" series. It was just like the original Game Boy, but in different colors. And that sold quite well.

I actually think it looks significantly more comfortable than the current 3ds models (especially the triggers) it's just ugly and not pocketable

Ugh. If they don't reduce the 3DSXL price soon, I'll probably just get this. There's a lot of 3DS games I really want to play, but at the same time I have too many systems as it is, and I can't really justify spending $200 on yet another console for the next few months. But $130...And maybe less second-hand...Eh I might bite. I would certainly never go out in public with this monstrosity, though.

Also, wtf Iwata.

I know it looks horrible, but how does it feel in the hands?
I posted this earlier in the thread. It's moving so fast so it's easy to miss.

Ugly, but comfy to hold based on hands on time from Jeremy Parish on USGamer, USA Today, and Eurogamer. Though Gamespots hands on took a shit on it.

Could someone post a separate thread detailing the medias hands on time with the 2DS to get an overall consensus on how this thing feels? I think it would be beneficial to everyone instead of trying to keep up with this thread.

Why even make a 3D system in the first place? I have so much mixed feels about this....

Blame it on Avatar (the blue aliens, not the airbender).

James Cameron revitalized the "3D" fad which was before Avatar nothing more than a corny gimmick. But after every single company saw those dollar signs, they made 3D everything; more movies, televisions, etc.

Most people are turned off by 3D now anyways due to over saturation and the fact that it was never really meant to be anything more than a fad in the first place. Personally, I think Nintendo saw that they could at least innovate it a bit (which they did, I mean, not needing glasses for 3D is impressive even if it doesn't work as well as it could) and decided to dive into it full force without really putting much emphasis on anything else.
