Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

Loving all these pictures that are coming in. In regards to the product though I don't think I'll be picking one up. Just doesn't look as portable as previous models. I was hoping for a 3DS XL and Pokemon X/Y bundle.

Oh god, they release new hardware to address a brand perception problem and in the process made the brand confusion even worse. Everybody involved in this should be fired, including Iwata.

This and the "Unified store accounts? Too difficult!" thing has convinced me they have no clue what's up. It wouldn't have been difficult to implement store accounts if you hadn't actively avoided it in the first place, Nintendo!

I'm late with my reaction because I just got home from work, but...

...I just, uhhh, what the frig?

But since this is releasing beside Pokemon X/Y it'll make BANK.

You mean the scenario where Nintendo sold millions?

No guy, I'm just talking about how hundreds of parents/guardians walking up to me asking "does this play that/ect". I'm not indicating that this is going to fail.

I'm sure Nintendo can print up and send out a poster

"Plays ALL 3DS and DS games"

Ha, unfortunately no one ever reads those things. They just look up to look at the logo and if it says Nintendo or DS, they walk over to it and wander through the accessory's and games.

thanks for the laugh
i remember when equating nintendo to tiger electronics was purely the realm of concern trolling. i never thought they'd use it as a design document.

The reactions here are so ridiculous.

It's a cheaper version of the 3DS. It plays all 3DS and DS games. Yeah, it's ugly, but I assume that that design means Nintendo makes these devices cheaper, which makes it more profitable for them.

It's a good alternative for those who want to enjoy 3DS and DS games but do not want to spend too much. Parents are gonna get this for their kids without thinking too much about the price, as long as it's one of those "Nintendo Mario things".

Man, if Nintendo are able to get the price right and if the wind's blowing in just the right direction they'll sell a fucking ton of these as stocking fillers for Christmas.

On the other hand come New Year there could be stacks of unsold units as far as the eye can see.

I honestly can't tell how it's gonna go.

...at least they're trying something.

The full touchscreen mock up makes me wonder if this 2ds is a experiment for the next Nintendo handheld with a full touch screen like tablets?

No need of them to do that with this one since this is mainly aimed for kids. But I do see this as a exleriment + foreshadowing of whats to come.

I expect something similar to a tablet for Nintendo's next handheld, powerful as a portable Wii U.

Uh...they did? I thought it was to exploit an under-served market (age 5-6 kids) and a pricing dilemma. Where do you even get the idea that it's done to address a brand perception problem?

Love how you call for heads rolling over this too. The sales figures aren't exactly in yet, are they?

Oh, and someone tell the parents that it's not a Wii U controller, it's not a Wii add-on, it's a standalone console which looks a lot like a Wii U controller, the latter of which is not a standalone console but a controller for a standalone console, and that neither the Wii U nor the 2DS are Wii add-ons.

That'll clear everything up.

I agree, some people are way over reacting. This thing will no doubt be a hit due to it's price alone.

I always wondered what happened to 2DS. Nintendo accidentially skipped a generation and now finally fix their oversight.

DS -> 2DS -> 3DS

The next gen handheld will be the 4DS.

I feel like I'm in the minority. but the 2DS doesn't aesthetically offend me. I mean yeah, its not a stunning piece of kit, but its more bland than outright ugly.

I get what Nintendo are trying to do with it though. No idea if they will be successful, mind.

What are they trying? To get even more successfull?

The 2DS is the perfect handheld for the 4 to 10 year olds (but also for other's who prefer/ed the smaller screens to the 3DS XL - du to a sharper image).

Parents will go crazy for this thing this holiday season. This is gonna sell a shitton!

The 3DS won't even be an option anymore. I think Ninty will be phasing that one out, so that in the future there will only be the 2DS and 3DS XL, which makes perfect sense.

A friend gave me the idea. Could not resist:

Someone should shop a 2 on his shirt.

I can get not having the 3D as I've seen a lot of people think it's pointless, but everything else?

No clamshell design immediately make it need a case and makes guaranteed to not fit in anyones pocket., the triggers are too far away, and most importantly: The 3DS and XL are selling just fine.

What is this for?

Why is this not a joke!?

Who says its not a joke?

It would make for an amazing Animal Crossing machine, as far as my interest goes. I'm not keen on portable gaming, but at a sweet pricepoint a bit further down the road I'd definitely be down for it.

Ok, I could be completely wrong here, but I think that thought of mobile gaming system = something you carry in your pocket is - how to put it - a false assuption?

I have NEVER EVER carried any mobile system in my pockets. NEVER. I only wear jeans and I'm even bothered by a slighty too thick briefcase.

I also doubt that the majority of gamers does that, so I think it's a non-issue. As I said, I could be wrong though.

Pocket-carrying GAF represent?

I strap them to my head, personally.

Unbelievable.

1. Screen size downgraded to original 3ds... smaller than DSi XL. Especially bad for kids.

2. Looks very uncomfortable to use, with controls in weird places relative to the screen and still no second stick. Again, especially bad for kids with small hands.

3. No longer portable, can't be closed.

Even if you wanted a 2ds would you want one with a smaller screen than the DSi XL, incredibly ugly, with terrible controls?

The 3DS XL (which I have) is obviously superior to this model so I will not be getting it, but I hope it brings more people into the fold as that will mean the platform getting more support.
