Nintendo Announces Nintendo 2DS

I like it. May pick one up to play Zelda and a few other first party titles (I only have ten games for the DS Lite I bought over five years ago).

It's not a pretty machine at all, but somehow has a certain charm. It's...quirky.

It'll certainly be more accessible for many. The features Nintendo removed probably aren't particularly notable to more casual players. Some people I wouldn't recommend anything less than a 3DS XL to, but I also know a handful who I can easily see picking up a 2DS.

Interesting move, for sure. This is obviously not intended to be an "upgrade" in any way, shape, or form; rather, it's a machine pruned for a specific audience, with an emphasis on affordability. It's a peculiar member of the 3DS family. A welcome addition, in my view.

It seems like they took the most hideous fan made 3ds mock up and started to actually build it...
why can't you fold it?
Given the fact that it is just 20€ cheaper then a real 3ds, why would you buy it?
To save measly 20 bucks?

I don't get it...

This would have been the perfect opportunity to put a full analog stick on the 3DS. I don't own a 3DS, and one of the biggest reasons is because I hate slide pads. Since there is no clam shell, theres nothing stopping the analog stick. Its not like this thing is pocketable either way. This thing is just a hideous miss in every way.

i bet it sells millions and millions

I might get a Japanese 2DS to import some games if I can get one cheap. I hoipe they announce it soon.
That's actually not a bad idea. Will wait for a special bundle probably.

I love the designs Nintendo comes up with, it's actually weird seeing a device having a form you are not used to. Same thing happened with the GamePad and original DS. The Wiimote resembling a normal remote controller was also pretty unique.

Looks much better than the OG 3DS and is definitely easier to hold. Just look at that. The Dpad and buttons are way to low on the OG 3DS to play comfortably for a longer time - that's why everyone was crying for an extra grip.

Edit: I just realized the gab between upper and lower screen on the 2DS is also smaller.
The white with the red border looks good.

I have no problem with this outside of the screens being too small.

After having played on 3DS XL there is no way I am going back to 3DS-sized screens.

I would only buy one if Nintendo released these awesome looking cases or something, or skins.
I dunno. Any word on that? I think it's sort of... growing on me? idk.

So the real question is... will there be a revision akin to the DS Lite -> DSi, or is this it?

Seems to be it for now. 3DS had its flaws but was pretty good and relatively small. XL refined a lot and was bigger. This is the cheap entry level device.

Basically
OG DS avoided all together.
3DS = DS Lite
2DS = DSi
3DS XL = DSi XL

What could they do at this point? DSi was essentially the testing grounds for the handheld firmware.

But the pattern does indicate that this will be the last revision:
1. base model
2. improved version of base model
3. branch out from base model

although the DSi XL was weird.

Why didn't they include a longer battery life? At least the thing looks sturdy as hell, perfect for kids. I'll just stick with my OG 3DS for now. There's no chance I would buy something with a design like that.

This mostly stings because we won't get a non-XL 3DS with brighter screens, or a 3DS Micro. Oh well, I'm one of those weirdos who loves OG 3DS, I've been thinking about upgrading... from aqua blue to purple :p

Due to it's lack of portability (especially for pockets) it looks like it was designed to be a 'stay at home' kind of device

Cheap battery, more profitability. I'm guessing they are making more money on this model and the 3DS XL.
