I... What...? I mean, what is even going on Nintendo?!

I'm speechless about this announcement. Just in total disbelief!

I'm pretty late to this but my god. Why not just release a new ds that plays 3ds games in 2d? This design is retarded. It needs to fold.

- Low price
- Released with Pokemon

It's so that parents with smaller children can buy with more confidence that it won't get snapped in half.

Because they are not trying to get rid of the 3D, they just want an entry level hardware that parents pick without second guessing for their children.

Personally I can't wait for the Iwata Asks on this. We won't hear much about the reasons till then.

This has to be the worst redesign I've ever seen. Removes features, adds nothing, less protected, and looks like shit. Wow Nintendo. I love you dearly, but wow lol

The side effect is that companies are going to give even less of a crap about 3D than they currently do. Which is fine, since the 3D is a gimmick anyway.

I love the wedge shape, I love the button placement, but I hate the screens. Why oh why did they ever make the screens different sizes?

If this actually had better battery life, I would consider getting one. The trade-off for no 3D is just not there for me. The price doesn't do it for what you'd be getting.

Its not a redesign as its not replacing anything. Its a new option. I wouldn't dream of getting this, but I can understand why it exists. For 6 year olds to play pokemon.

In spite of what numbers tell, this probably will have a better battery for some people. 3DS's battery high is for 3D off (and I'm not sure if it includes Battery Saving mode too), and many never really switch 3D off.

I'm mostly disappointed about mono sound. 3DS's speakers are surprisingly incredible quality-wise, and having only one of them with an asymmetrical placement doesn't excite me at all. Kids probably don't care about that, but older folks will mind it.

I think this best shows the reaction I had to this device.

Miiverse runs on a browser.
The 3DS browser can work while games are running.
Ergo, Miiverse can run on 3DS.

If you try to access Miiverse on the 3DS browser, you get "The Internet browser you are using cannot be used to access Miiverse."

It works fine on my Vita, though. Oh, Nintendo.

Older folks should get the real 3DS's and not the Fisher Price looking model.

Obviously, that's an option. Thing is that I'm having my doubts about whether this is form factor is aimed for kids more than it is a market test for a future potentially tablet-like device with a similar design.

This is probably more expensive to assemble than a slightly modified 3DS-like shell. Though I guess the single screen makes it cheaper even not including the lack of 3D.

I just realized that playing any game that heavily makes uses of the touch screen along with the button is going to be awful. They're way too far apart to be ergonomical...

Playing Monster Hunter (where the touch screen serves as a digital d-pas for the camera), for example, is going to be awful (it wasn't perfectly ideal on the regular 3DSes but it did the job at least).

Same with games that use the 3DS in "book mode", not going to be ideal either...

Tempted by one of these, I almost exclusively play DS in bed with my girlfriend right now (Layton, Phoenix Wright etc) so wouldn't be able to use the 3D that way anyway

The fact I had to look up if this was a new console when a friend mentioned it just shows another 3DS/Wii U situation happening all over again.

Nintendo truly are cheap motherfuckers with shit naming abilities.
