Indie Games [September] Now Voting - Post 878!

I don't think so, Indiegogo is mostly for european devs who can't get through kickstarter. The one advantage of indiegogo is flexible funding where they can take however much money that comes through the campaign. Indiegogo has much less exposure though, and the most funded projects don't even reach 100K.

I checked all the links for Super Techno Ninja, and it was only a handful of obscure indie gaming sites that picked up on it. Not even a RPS mention. Maybe the lack of promotion is more the reason for not achieving £5000 which is a very low goal on kickstarter.
Well the dev is from Europe, right? The UK? I was just thinking that Indiegogo probably has a more indie gamer focused audience compared to Kickstarter. Look at how successful Gods Will Be Watching was

Super Techno Ninja dev responded:

Thanks for showing an interest in the project, as it stands it's pretty dead in the water. I think my approach to kickstarter in general was a bit 'off'. I set a pretty low goal (compared to other projects) which was pretty much the bare minimum needed to make the game, and just the game, at the start of the project there were no t-shirts + extra stuff on offer, the idea I had was pretty much just for the game, my outlook was "if people are interested in the game itself, it will get backed, if not, it won't", and it didn't. I did work pretty hard trying to promote the thing, but it didn't really get much traction. Like I said above, I approached this all wrong, where I had thought / assumed / hoped that I could "sell" the project on the game alone, I underestimated the importance of the extra rewards people like to get, as well as how much time and effort you need to pump into promotion. I was probably quite naive, but then it was my first experience of crowdfunding, no excuses though. If I had the $$$$$ the game would get made, but alas at the moment I don't, and seeing as I didn't even reach 25% funding, I'm personally not too confident another kickstarter would even work, and apparently indiegogo is even harder if you don't have a pre-existing fanbase(?). It's nice to know that people were interested in the project though, unfortunately not enough people were interested init for it to get backed, or even come remotely close to getting backed.

I'm a bit disappointed with Dream, maybe because I was expecting it to experiment more with its structure, like The Stanley Parable, or to be more interactive version of eerie and poetic Dear Esther. What we get is something more conventional, which is not, per se, a bad thing – Kairo is exceptional, with how it blends exploration, puzzles and a story together to create coherent and interesting world – it's just too early to tell how those elements will work together – it looks like it's not even half way done. It could become a great game, but I would wait for it to reach, at least, beta state.

I'm happy that I read your opinions Hofmann before deciding to buy the game, I'll wait for when the game gets the full release.

Maybe you remember The Note - it has just been released and it's free:
http://www.motamot.co/thenote/

In ‘The Note’, you don't know anything about your character. You don't know, what to do, where to go and even, which buttons to use. Run, face images, texts and hear words about a poem and live it. This is the biggest part of the experience, the interaction.. Run through unknown, until you face death.

Well, then. I don't think it's fair to say crowdfunders want lots of t-shirt rewards or that people are just not interested in a game with those inspirations. He only had 2 updates in a whole month. I think the fact that he admits to not working much on the campaign to promote it is the issue. When you're doing a kickstarter, for that month it's all about the promotion, updates, contacts, messages. You won't get much time to make your game.

Thank you for biting the bullet. How much of the game is in there, playtime-wise? As long as a demo?

What Adrian Chmielarz has to say about our little thread:

Toma's created a true monster.

I was always convinced that we needed this thread, good that people seem to agree.
Good job, Toma.

Is NeoGAF still considered a troll cesspit by the general internet community? Before joining, I had only heard bad things about GAF, which is why I had been hesitant to join. And turns out it's by far the best most friendly community I've ever been a part of

Before joining, I thought it was considered the most mature gaming community. Which is why I decided to join up. I mean, cesspits are things like Gametrailers, GameFAQs, IGN, Gamespot forums.

Really? I only heard about trolls and stuff on GAF before. Guess that vocal minority is pretty loud. But yeah nowadays, I only post in GameFAQs when I need a quick response or impressions

It's moderated well, as it has been for a long time, so that's a new thing for me to hear. I was always more concerned about general reception of less ''gamey'' experiences, but it seems this is not a problem as well.

Btw guys, if you're interested in Dream, but you don't want to buy unfinished game, then check out Hyde: http://hyde-game.com/. They're both about troubled individuals, albeit with different set of problems;D
I don't remember the game being included on the monthly list before.

I'm glad we chatted before I pulled the trigger on Dream!

Kairo was incredible

On that twitch stream, Outlast graphics look vastly improved. And seeing patients is really cool.

Yeah, it's looking really good. I'm tempted to pre-order it but I hate being chased in horror games, haha.

Edit: Oh, they are going to show Gravity Ghost soon. That's supposed to be like a 2D Mario Galaxy and is by the person who did Puzzle Bots.

Slightly off topic, but what is a feed? Wanted to post an article or two of mine on Reddit to spread the word about overlooked games every now and then

Then it says this:
Don't use /r/indiegaming as a feed to your site, don't submit every article and news that your site publishes. Quality over quantity please.

I'm guessing like RSS feeds, to use as a link between websites? Or to use self-promotion? Didn't even realise reddit had rules.

Have we touched on Hot Tin Roof yet?

Kickstarter | Greenlight | Trailer

Hot Tin Roof: The Cat That Wore A Fedora is a single-player game aimed at PC / Mac / Linux.

On the one hand, it's a noir side-scrolling adventure platformer, stuffed with style and charm.
You're Emma Jones - a two bit gal in an 8-bit world - and you're the Private Investigator on a string of grisly murders.
You'll run, jump and climb through a massive 3D city (it's not just a flat sideways plane), sleuthing up clues and tracking down the killer.

On the other hand, it's Metroidvania inspired - but with more of the Metroid, less of the vania. It's an explorable city with soul!
Full of characters to chat up and secrets to explore, it's not just a corridor you fight through on your way to your next ability.

----

It sounds and looks cool. Here's hoping they are able to gain funding and release a good game.

Super Techno Ninja dev responded:

Guy sounds like a dope. His Kickstarter was poorly promoted and poorly designed (goal too low, bad rewards, no updates, etc.) Lots of devs learn from these mistakes, get back on the horse, and see success after a second attempt at crowdfunding. If he's going to set arbitrary success standards for himself and then give up when he fails to meet them I'm skeptical of how well he would've dealt with the pressure of developing a full game.

Looks great! And it's by Megan Fox :)

No, not the actress :p

Wanted to say Constant C is awesome. I got it last month but didn't really start getting into it today. Now I can change gravity on my own and the difficulty ramped up.

I'd compare it in terms of Gateways, maybe not in sheer complexity but in how the difficulty increases and so many components you have to consider to reach the exit. Here's a nice excerpt from a review:

Let’s talk about the stage that almost made me grab my tower and jump off a cliff with it. I had to flip gravity to get a gate to open, turn it to one side as I moved through the gate to start falling, turn it again before I crashed into something and died, let my time power move one of two blocks that were close together, flip gravity to a different side while standing near the block, hop from said block as it fell to make my time power come in contact with another gate so it would slide open, survive my fall with the blocks…and it just goes on.

Darkmakaimura

Can You Imagine What SureAI Is Going To Do With Garfield?
Well, took my chance and downloaded the Legend of Lya demo.

That game needs serious work. It just passed the Kickstarter. It has the potential to be a good game but yeah, this is definitely (hopefully) a very, very early prototype.

Very early, indeed. Still a ways to go. Nov 2014.

"THE DEMO:

WARNING: THIS IS AN EARLY PREVIEW DEMO OF A GAME STILL A YEAR AWAY FROM COMPLETION - IT'S ROUGH, IT CONTAINS SOME PLACEHOLDER ART, MOSTLY PLACEHOLDER SOUND, AND SOME UNFINISHED CODE. STILL - TRY TO HAVE FUN!: )"

Shades of Sanity
(PS: It's psychological horror Gone Home-style)
With only limited meds to cope Joe explores the house, learning that each previous resident is somehow connected to him, and each has met a horrible fate. Eventually his meds run out and you are left with primitive methods to cope with the strange and surreal visions, hoping that if you close your eyes or look away they'll disappear. But even innocent scenes could be feeding a deeper delusion. Is this really my house? If this is Kim’s stuff, where is she? Who are these other people I keep seeing?

And why does everyone react as if I’m going to hurt them?

Once Upon Light
Trailer
One Upon Light is a monochromatic top-down puzzle game with a photophobic protagonist. Trapped in a world of shifting shadows and light, players manipulate objects in the environment to create a path of shadows and avoid contact with light.
The game utilizes unique mechanics revolving around the central theme of light and shadow. The protagonist’s past is incrementally hinted at as the player progresses through the game.

Let me show you through these halls, my friend, where treasures of indie gaming await...
Yes!! Thank you, hope you like the game!
Here is (the first?) screen of the final version only for NeoGaf:

Fancy, I bought the Beta too because I loved the free version. Did you make any announcements about future additions? I played the Beta for a while and the concept is really, really cool, but there wasnt much variety yet.
