I've made these mock-ups to show how much worse the sun could have looked.

I call this one "The Bioware"

This one, I call "The Kubrick"

This one will be called "The DICE"

Please tell me you are joking.

Yeah, we Aussies have a tradition where we only use tyres with serious flat-spots to fill tire walls. It greatly enhances collision damping according to the CSIRO, Australia's premier scientific and research institute..
Just goes to show the lengths Turn 10 will go for that extra bit of authenticity..

That makes no sense? Also different times of day has been confirmed (or leaked...) already iirc (just like as in FM4).

Since when did tyres has straight edges!!!??

Yeah, why wasn't each one of the 150+ tires in that wall, which you can't even see 99,9% of the time, modeled using a few thousand more polys ?

for the first time in the history of racing games we get properly, individually modeled tires as opposed to a flat textured surface and you guys are complaining they are not perfectly round??

Wouldn't it be really funny if people realized the sun is bright, and that it's actually one of the really challenging things about track-racing?

So when they complain about the sunlight in screens like this:

It just looks silly on their part?
I don't think its a question of realism, its more that its just kind of annoying. Yea, bad sun glare is a part of racing at times, but in a video game, the power is there to avoid that. Just like most racing games don't tend to simulate random reliability problems and bad stewarding.

Turn 10 just seem awfully fond of it, while I think it would be nice to tone it down some so we can enjoy the graphics and better visibility.

If only models could vary their detail dynamically depending on the needs of the scene.

I think many people would cringe at the idea of eliminating one of the elements of real driving/racing that's implemented realistically in a game like this. I don't like the sun in my eyes any more than I like crashing, but both should be there.

Did you say real?

The sun is in the same place every time!

Until they can have dynamic weather, they should leave it out. Do real when you can actually do it properly.

This is the equivalent of driving past a crowd and some idiot walks in front of your car everytime at the same exact place on the track. oooh real!

Why?

Would you be happy if they included a feature that meant that you'd randomly have a blown engine or clutch or gearbox or brake disc or something in the middle of a race? Or what about failed clutch at the start of the race that meant you couldn't go anywhere and just had to reload the race?

I bet some people say they would enjoy that, because of the realism, but when it came down to it, it would be an annoying ass feature.

Basically, 100% realism isn't really something that we should desire. Video games thankfully aren't bound by the limits of real-life and can avoid many of the downsides of real racing.

Now, if we were talking about full day/night cycles or just one or two tracks with a morning or late evening race time, then sure, extreme sun glare might have its place.

I would like engine failure, but not the SAME failure at the SAME part of the track EVERY race.

y'all should be ashamed

Like pit stops.

...oh.

But really though, the effect is way way way overdone.

You really wouldn't like that. It sounds nice in your head, but when you're 6 minutes into the race of your life and your engine just randomly kicks out on you, you're not going to be happy. If you do nothing wrong and are doing a good job, you should be rewarded for it.

Imagine in ANY other game, you were just playing, doing great, but the game just kills you for no reason and you get a GAME OVER screen, making you redo whatever you were doing. Would you enjoy that? Probably not. So why would that be a positive in a racing game? Because its realistic? No. Realism isn't always fun. Ask any race driver if they've ever enjoyed having a DNF due to a mechanical failure.

Man, a slight tweak on the colors could do wonders for the graphics :/

I hear ya LOL but I am one of those weirdos that stop at stop signs in driving games and do 40MPH cruises in FM4.

I think it has to be implemented creatively to happen as a matter of consequence, like push too hard and you're more likely to have something happen. drive clean, less likely.
More like a cause/effect, not just happily on lap 3 2 corners left and my tires pop off.

Complete random failures would suck, I get that, but I'm all for a little unpredictability as long as it's the same challenge for everyone.

Again, the scenarios upon how this would happen would have to be thought out to not be a frustrating experience.

Come on, defenders of the faith: the problem isn't the low blinding sun, it's complete and utter overuse of the low blinding sun.

Typical Dan. If something's worth doing it's worth doing all of the time until everyone's sick of it. And then once again just for good luck.

The phrase "less is more" would be good advice to follow sometimes. First time I saw the low blinding sun effect in the very first Prague video, it looked cool. To have it as a constant feature in just about all media since then? Not so cool.

Show some restraint. Please!

Mascot, please understand.

It's always sunny in Forza!
And always the same time of day.
Just like major motorsport races in real life!
Always perfect conditions, always the same time of day from start to finish.

And xbox shall emulate. Nary a cloud to be had from THE CLOUD. So no worries or fret of rain of cooling track or darkness.

Perfect conditions for the perfect racing simulator.

It's far more advanced than F1 simulators you know, spared no expense!

Smarm aside, I'm very happy Bathurst is in. One more thing closer to sway me into spending 560 bucks on one game. But even Bathurst ain't quite enough yet...

Tough choice, next gen. pCARS? Not sure if coming out for Xbox One or PS4... AC- a self publishing pipe-dream, might land on PS4. PGR- dead. SimBin- no console release to be had. Driveclub- looks great, super fun PGRish. F1- bring on next gen in with 14/15 I guess. Milestone- what the heck are you doing, WRC, MotoGP, SBK in the works yet? GT6/7 on next gen in 2016-19? Horizon 2, when do you land, you could sure as hell sway me too.

Forza's a system seller for sure, but you guys really willing to pay 560+ bucks for one game without knowing if the wheels you own are compatible yet either? That's some hardcore fandom right there.

PC is the way to go for racing sims

What do you suggest spending the money on, PS4 and Drive Club? £600+ on a PC upgrade?

Brother, believe me, I know this in my heart, but try selling that to a wife with a baby due in two weeks... "Honey, I really want to drop 1200 on a PC and possibly more on a proper racing rig".
Then thing that'll really push her over the edge is asking her to stand there with a hair dryer running to simulate the heat of the cockpit...

Yeah... cheaper console gaming for me for a while.

Anyway, offt topic! Back to the complaining per this thread. Doesn't Turn 10 ever listen to us?!?! We demanded a new Forza Motorsport logo when FM3 dropped man! Seriously! That FM has to change!
;)

If the rumored full list for all the ALMS tracks is true, holy crap, it'll be a lot tougher to resist for me. MS DRM shenanigans or not.

But damn. 560 bucks for one game. Ugh.

edit- drugstore_cowboy- Not sure, just saying that if Fanatec wheels aren't compatible, I'd feel rubbed raw looking at it sit there while playing this. But if people have the funds, I don't think you could really go much wrong with any platform. PS4 will have GT and DC, Xbox will eventually have more racers out for it. NFS will be on both. pCARS, who knows. FOR ME, it's just a lot to plunk down right now for basically one game. F1 will come, but will others? WRC/SBK/MotoGP, lately, haven't released for NA xboxes. Will we get a Dirt 4? Grid 3: Da Streets?

RoKKeR- basically racing games only for me.

I loved the failures in F1'97 and lived with the consequence then progressed onto the next race.

To answer your qurstion pCARS is coming to the Xbox One and PS4 after the PC release in 2014 - you might want to log onto the WMD forum and read the developer comments sometime as you are a member ;) AC may be ported to the PS4 at a later date and it's a long shot it'll happen; Steam pre-orders are coming in September for those of us who also race on PC. Milestone are still making games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 - MotoGP 13 has been out for a while now, I've no idea what is going on with the SBK series and WRC 4 coming to EU/UK/AU/NZ in October. DriveClub looks like a next-gen PGR game so I have high hopes for it too.

Like you Jamesways, FM5 is shaping up rather nicely and for me it could be a system seller based just on the tracklist. It's always nice to read that some fans are getting what they want from Turn10.

op_ivy

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
i still cant believe people are complaining about those tires. shit, if anything i'd say turn10 was wasteful in having them as detailed as they are.

Except when you can select the time of day, like in Forza 4.

on like 2 tracks?

And still sunny no less!

Apart from the Ring, no overcast environments. Ever. I'd love to see that change.

Well, Silverstone was mostly cloudy in FM2. So, there's that.

I'm holding out hope though. Shift 2, FRL, MotoGP (07 and 10/11 which ran at 60fps with cloudy/sun/ and rain/wet no less), SBK, PGR, RP, F1, etc. Can be done. Hope they have time/and or resources.

But yeah yeah, disk space. No dynamic anything. Please understand. 1080/60fps. The next xbox maybe we'll have the power to add clouds...
