New PS Vita LCD screen 'not inferior to OLED', insists Sony

House: "LCD panel can now realise an image quality as high as that of the OLED"

The five-inch LCD panel at the centre of the new PlayStation Vita will match the quality of the OLED display found in older models, a Sony exec has claimed.

"The main reason is that the LCD panel can now realise an image quality as high as that of the OLED panel," House told the gathering of journalists.

In-store photos beg to differ... but I hope the difference isn't that major. There will come a day where I may need to replace my launch day vita, and I may have to settle for a newer model

I don't care about the quality as long as I don't have to worry about burn-in. There's three reasons I never bought Vita:

1. Fear of burn-in
2. It's stupidly big
3. Too expensive w/card

All 3 concerns are finally taken care of

but it's even bigger now?

How long has the original Vita been out now that Sony's much hyped OLED can now be matched by LCD? Just be honest and call it a money saving change.

A good LCD screen is fine. Plus no burn in or that nasty MURA effect (black stains).

This is true. OLED might have deeper black levels and more contrast, even better colours, but has also downsides like mura or yellow tint. The new display should be good enough.

See, doing PR like that is not a smart move, because it prevents you from hyping OLED for your next product without coming across as a disingenious tool.

They should've gone for LCD tech similar to what they use in their latest phones, Triluminos was it? It's quite good.

My biggest problems with OLED are burn-in (The screen on my Galaxy Nexus looks horrible only a year after use, I really hope the Vita doesn't degress that far) and the black splotches visible on a black screen.

Here's another image, which is totally representative of the quality of the new screen. You should base 100% of your purchasing decision on this:
