This is all conjecture, but I'm going to go out on a limb and sarcastically comment that it's SUCH a shocker that a female/transexual game reviewer couldn't take this game in stride without mentioning misogyny.

The characters in the GTA world are crude, murdering gangsters, and misogyny is what "Carolyn Petit" is concerned about.

Only after googling her did I realize she was actually a he. We get it, you're trying to represent "femininity" and girl power by standing up for your new gender. This fact makes her sensitive journalism even more laughable.

Why would you do this?

Haha. I bet on a metacritic of 98. First to cast my lot on that outcome. As long as it doesn't fluctuate, I'm going to keep giving myself pats on the back.

EDIT: 97 now ... shite.

has anyone bringing up complaints about the female characters given it less than a 9.0. the feminist agenda to slur rockstar is clearly in full force

These threads go the same way people bitching that the scores are to high and are predictable.

I don't see anything wrong with Sesslor's review, he made a good point. I really just don't get the posters here that have to complain about those but they need to find something to bitch about.

Her review just sucks though.

Given how notorious R* are for hand-picking who gets the first wave of review copies, I feel like the second wave of reviews for the game that come after release have the potential to be a bit more divisive.

Will rent for now.

LOL all the reviewers are complaining about the violence and the misogyny present in GTA5. All i have to say is "its GTA,what did you expect!"

Carolyn Petit enjoyed the game. A lot. I'm not sure why people are singling out her review.

And even if she had gave it a negative score it wouldn't invalidate what she's saying. Let's chill out a bit.

I think she should have gone into more detail about whether the game itself was misogynistic or the characters are. I would completely understand her criticism of the game if it was promoting or glorifying the behavior, but if it was the characters I think it comes with the territory of writing despicable people. If the game is a wholesale making fun of both male and female characters then I don't see why it should be an issue. Then again I don't have to deal with the shit she gets for being a female gamer so I shouldn't judge.

How dare this female care about and be influenced by how a game she played treats females!

It's not a female. It's a transgender who is being overly sensitive about something that is to be expected in the GTA ecosystem. I wonder if she was upset about beating hookers up in GTA III when she was still a man.

Play the game, see for yourself.

Golden rule for everything, really.

Yeah, but reviews are normally what help you decide if its worth purchasing, now all you could do is maybe find yourself friends with similar tastes or something like that..

But what of the resolution? That was my main issue with Red Dead on PS3, it was dreadfully blurry, and that was without comparison to the 360 version. I actually stopped playing it and went out and bought the 360 version and wow what a difference.

digital foundry face-off is tomorrow morning. If you have both 360 and PS3 you could wait for that? but both versions seem decent

The IQ is much higher than RDR which looked horrible compared to the 360 version. There is occasional aliasing with the AA method employed so I'm assuming that dynamic resolution is used. It's possibly sub-720p at times. But it looks really, really great.

It looks so much sharper than the low res vaseline smear of Red Dead. This definitely isn't GTA IV... which I find unplayable on consoles.

That said, Rockstar games have traditionally always had better AA on the 360. So I would be surprised if the 360 copy wasn't the definitive version. From the screen grabs of the 360 version though, there really is little to no difference between the two that I can tell.

Frustrated? Not at all. Just having a bit of fun since you always seem so angry in GTA threads.

But offending you was genuinely not my intention so I'll apologize and keep quiet.
I merely express my opinion and try to observe what's going on, no anger is involved, maybe bitterness about the state of video games journalism and Rockstar so openly abusing the situation. Nothing that would warrant anyone to actively try to discredit my posts every single time at every opportunity though.

It's almost like her life experience is coming across in a subjective game review. GASP!

Ugh.

"I can imagine, 200 years from now, like our reading of Dickens, the game will be regarded as a catalog of our contemporary travails, an accelerated reality bearing more truth than just gazing at our own reflection."

Yeah, I can't take gaming journalism seriously anymore.

GTA is full of a hundred societally detrimental themes and topics. If you only mention one of those as any kind of problem or flaw in the game, I don't think it's wrong to say it's being mentioned for affect or agenda.

It's not worth a 9/10 review. It really isn't.

I will say, however, that "Politically muddled and proudly misogynistic" is such a weak, negative point to ascribe to a game that doesn't put its story forward as a selling point.

Yeah, I can't take gaming journalism seriously anymore.

That isn't being serious. It's a joke.

I'm glad this game is being received well, as I'm looking forward to playing it whenever it comes out for PC. I'm also hoping the consensus won't change to much over the coming weeks as (not undeserved) hype starts to cool down, that would be a bummer.

As for now, I'm bailing the fuck out of this thread because this could get ugly.

I think she makes a good case for the whole game being it with this paragraph:

Characters constantly spout lines that glorify male sexuality while demeaning women, and the billboards and radio stations of the world reinforce this misogyny, with ads that equate manhood with sleek sports cars while encouraging women to purchase a fragrance that will make them “smell like a bitch.” Yes, these are exaggerations of misogynistic undercurrents in our own society, but not satirical ones. With nothing in the narrative to underscore how insane and wrong this is, all the game does is reinforce and celebrate sexism. The beauty of cruising in the sun-kissed Los Santos hills while listening to “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood turns sour really quick when a voice comes on the radio that talks about using a woman as a urinal.

It's a valid complaint over a train of thought that afflicts the video game industry. And, more importantly, you're seeing more than just females bring it to the forefront.

To imply that misogyny comes anywhere near the moral dilemma of murder, is just fucking absurd. If this was a Teen rated game, I could possibly understand depending on the context of the game, but with the countless other morality breaking things this game offers, misogyny is hardly worth mentioning, in comparison.

Aside from that, I'm excited to feed "the patriarchy" by playing this amazing game.

For real though there is alot of mediocrity in the talent of video game reviewing. Its why theres no big names of reviewing, just big mainstream corporate sites. Maybe i should pursue this void as a career...

Fair enough.
Usually everyone has a reviewer or two they can trust though.
Better yet if you can read the review and see if the arguments make sense to you.

No, the crime is a lack of perspective and variety in games reviews. If scores can be so easily predicted, what good are they? The problem isn't the high score, it's the predictability.

I went back and listened to the GFW Radio episode talking about the GTA IV reviews and everything they said was as poignant today, which is kind of depressing.

last of us deserved it. GTA IV deserved it at the time. Bioshock Infinite could not have deserved it less, reviewers were paid off there.
I think this ones definately a case of deserving all praise

GTA IV deserved it? Jesus Christ... oO

Last Of Us didn't deserve it either, but I can let that one slide. GTA IV, lol... you must be joking. You have to be.

The most offensive thing i see is the very ugly graphics in that screenshot.

I think she makes a good case for the whole game being it with this paragraph:

She makes a good point, but I don't like how quickly she dismissed the humor as not being a direct satire. I think the game is making fun of the males in those adds too, at least I did with GTA 4.

I'm so enjoying the salt coming from the GS review. They pretty much assigned the worst person to review it outside of Tom McShea.

And this is far from the first time that a review from Carolyn has sparked much debate over her views.

She can't win. though.

If she went into detail people would say she was harping too much on it. If she just focuses on the positive and mentions in passing the people complain that she doesn't substantiat her claim.

It's like the only option is for her to shut up and not saying anything about it, which I don't think is fair.

you don't think that rockstar put the story forward as a big selling point for this game? i completely disagree.
