Is Sony doing a mistake releasing the new Vita in Japan on the same week of Pokèmon?

This has been discussed several times in the sales thread but I don't think it ever got to have it's own thread.

Sony will be releasing the new Vita two days before the Pokèmon release.
Do you guys think this is going to hinder the Vita sales?
And why do you think Sony decided to launch the new version of is portable two days before Pokèmon?

It's pretty stupid if you ask me. It's going to be overshadowed big time. Sure it wasn't going to do much for sells, but having the spotlight for a period would've been better than nothing. A system that's already struggling going against Pokemon is just a foolish move.

I would think it wouldn't matter. People don't really buy new consoles just because games aren't coming out that week/month, do they? Nor the opposite, skipping out on a console because a new game they want is coming out? /shrug

I'm more curious as to why these things are perceived as being in direct competition at all.

I doubt they're expecting big first week sales. The Vita model will be a replacement for the old one and, considering it is in some ways a downgrade, it's probably a pretty good idea to pitch it low and just let it take over the Vita shelf.

Is it me or is the gaming market becoming too over crowded? High profile games launching the same day or close to other games and indie games. Consoles launching close to each other(within a week).

Since the revision has no price difference (cut) and arguably worse specs now (no OLED) among the more hardcore crowd, I don't see this thing changing sales numbers, pokemon or not.

All it does is improve the margins for Sony on a now low-production item that could not achieve the desired economies of scale effect they originally wished for.

I don't think anyone is even interested in this. It doesn't matter if they're hardcore or casual, they just don't want to buy a downgraded version for the same price.

Maybe they want to avoid this again, at least a bit:

Wind Waker HD and Sonic Lost World (and maybe Ace Attorney 5 in the West) are all going to flop because of Pokémon.

I might be an exception but...

...I'm buying all 4. My preorders for Zelda, Sonic and Pokemon X are already paid off; with regard to AA5, I've been sitting on my Eshop credit from SMTIVxFE promo, for that game.

As for Vita 2000: I'd have to hear how the screen actually compares with (my) OLED 1000, while at the same brightness level.

I don't really expect Vita numbers to pick up very much until after the release of the PS4. It might get a boost then as a companion accessory. Sales will probably never be high though. It will need to be considered a niche sub market.

I don't think many Japaneses consider Vita as PS4 companion at all. Vita TV will be sold as a cheapest home console in the market and might be selling higher than PS4 for a while though.

I doubt it matters when the new model is released. Pokemon will sell like crazy regardless and the 3DS will probably be the top selling platform for a while during that time.

I doubt the new model was going to sell a lot of people on the system on its own (I doubt Sony thought it would move the needle much either). I would bet releasing the new version is more down to the cost of construction, with the new model be significantly cheaper for Sony to manufacture. Therefore there won't be a big bump in sales regardless, but any of the new sales on the new model will end up netting Sony some profit.

Sony appears to be positioning Vita that way, but possibly just for Western markets. Vita TV will certainty be marketed differently in Japan.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
No. They need the new model to be on the market prior to the holiday season in order to gain traction. They have virtually no other release window as they would be competing with other major 3DS releases on top of MH4 and Pokemon.

Titles such as Mario Party, Puzzles & Dragons, One Piece, Inazuma Eleven, amongst others are guaranteed 300k+ sellers and it would be a tragedy to release it alongside such titles.

Edit: Maybe a release on the same date as God Eater 2 would of been better but that is in early November nonetheless.

Nintendo has Japan on lockdown

I still see Vita doing well globally. With all of these high profile indies, AAA Port initatives (i guess they want to continue beyond borderlands 2), PS4 Remote play, and Localizations...

It should stay relatively healthy as far as attach rate and slow but steady growth like it is now.

No idea how they can repair the situation in Japan. Its not like it doesn't have some great titles. They hit between 60-100K and drop off.

I think PSO2 has 500k+ Vita players. I dunno man. Sony not securing Monster Hunter hurt damn good. SE and Capcom seem allergic to supporting the system

There's never going to be queues of people waiting for the release of a slimmed down version of a console so launching anytime isn't really all that important.

It's just what they need to do. Vita has lost considerable momentum since the price drop now and the sooner a new model resurfaces the better. The PSP-2000 was a very strong model relaunch for the PSP, but it did have software to accompany it. The Vita might have troubles initially, but the holiday line-up is decent.

Umm, if there's anywhere the Vita can recover and stay within a healthy niche, it's Japan. It's practically a lost cause in the West and even the 3DS is doing mediocre numbers outside Japan.

I've clearly missed something somewhere, because as I understood it the Vita revision was basically the same price for something arguably not as good. I don't see why anyone would expect it to even move the needle.

But the hardcore crowd never drives truly successful products in any line of business. Consumers have proven again and again that given the choice between two products that do the same thing, they'll take the cheaper one every time even if the other is a better product.

Without major retail software support, I don't see how PS Vita has much life left in it. Sony hasn't shown enough commitment to the platform, and late ports as well as indie titles aren't going to cut it. Besides, how many of those indie games are also going to be released on PS3 and/or PS4 ? It's like Sony rushed PS Vita out without a real game plan for it.

You know, systems tend to sell for more than just their first week. It's more of a concern if their software is placed in bad weeks. Since so much of the Vita's software is niche it might get eaten up by bigger releases.

Doesn't matter what they do. Nothing will stop or slow down Pokemon. NOTHING. Conversely, nothing Sony does will be able to combat it

I think it is kinda smart. If they can correctly show off the Vita in stores to people who were unable to pick up a 3DS or Pokemon, they could move a few units.
