*SHOCKING* PS4 to outsell Xbox One at launch, predicts Pachter

He is such a meanie in this episode.

Hahahaha, no joke! Fuck! I've never watched Pach Attack but I figured if give this one a shot based on your comment and holy shit he's on a warpath. Gleefully being a condescending bully, haha, jeez.

And not knowing who Inafune is and not even bothering to do one minute of research before answering a question? Literally the top line of his Wikipedia page (or any recent article on Mighty No.9) would have been enough.

No wonder this guy makes so many baseless predictions. He must always just answer bullishly based on preconceived notions and prejudices.

Why is there even an article about what has been known for a long time
For people who don't frequently visit sites like gaf I would think.

Anywho, I think they'll both sell out at launch.
With the ps4 selling slightly better due to having more supplies, plus being $100 bucks cheaper.

Isn't Pachter talking to investors who might know next to nothing about the industry? It doesn't sound that asinine to say things this this obvious to the hardcore gaming crowd if his intended audience don't know any better.

He was answering a question for pach attack... dunno why he is given such dumb questions though.

MS will get outsold until they can match on price, period. There are plenty of things they can do to make up for the power difference but they can't overcome that.

Surface Pro 2 is a good comparison, has a lot of features, but it's overpriced compared to it's competition (Ipad, Nexus 7).

Sorry to get off topic, but really? Surface Pro 2 competition is MacBook Air if you need to bring in an Apple product, but even that's a stretch. The iPad and Nexus aren't in the same league or even targeting the same market.

Even a $50 price drop at E3 would help a lot. Sony can just include a free PSN game and a few months of Plus to counter though.

Obvious prediction. If Microsoft had the same number of preorders they would be preaching about them right now. The fact that they are not means they don't have the same number of preorders.

What will be interesting is what the turnover rate is on preorders. Many people are buying consoles in hopes of flipping them for a profit. We all saw what happened with the Wii-u, with all the returns in Jan/Feb.

Surface 2 Pro doesn't even come with a keyboard. I think they would sell more if they could lower the price at launch, but I don't know their margin.

They already are though. 2 weeks of PS+ and drive club for free (PS+ subscribers). I think Sony is in a great place right now. Every console is essentially bundled with a game. Anyone who wants to play online will get PS+ anyway (as they would have to buy live otherwise).

I still think X1 will win this holiday. Not saying PS4 doesn't have a shot, but come Black Friday most people will walk out with X1 and CoD Ghosts.

Not in North America, but they don't need pack-ins here yet.

Even if this were possible, I don't think MS would even have the supply to meet such a demand. Sony will have more to sell, and thus will sell more. At cheaper price too.

Like someone said earlier, this spring will be more telling.

I wouldnt bet money on anything. All it takes is one must-have to change everything.

One game has never sold me on a console. I'd have to have 5 or more games to sell me on a second console... especially at $400-500 price point. Now I plan to pick up the Wii-U once it is around $199, but with lower prices come lower games required. $500 is huge, as in get a PS3 + 32" HDTV huge.... it all comes down to price.

We get the plus version of Drive Club as part of PS Plus too, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

Because Pachter.

And for good reason. No sport is as competitive as gaming. No piece of literature is as throught provoking or well written. The best aspects of music and film are integrated and actually elevated in the gaming medium. Standard controller games are the last non-VR entertainment bastion. The final frontier.

Man I hope this is sarcasm.

I have to say, I actually hope Pachter is right. And I, currently, plan on getting an Xbone
(first. I don't know when I'll get a PS4, but the Order 1886, Infamous SS, Knack, and Killzone SF have me convinced I will be getting one).

Why? Simple.

If the Xbox does not sell as well as the PS4, then Microsoft will compelled to continue to pump out lots of good games to compete with Sony. Once Microsoft feels secure, then they will likely feel content to slow down a bit. We know Sony was compelled to do this when the 360 shot ahead of the PS3, and look where they are now with the amount of games they have (the quality is debatable, but you can't deny that most are deffinately worth playing and in certain instances, stellar).

If the Xbone is selling poorly, then Halo 5 better be pretty stinking amazing for some people to get one.

You get me?
You can't just "pump out lots of good games", it take years to build studios of sufficient quality, nevermind develop the actual titles.

Sony have been doing this since the PSONE days, and gradually built their portfolio during the PS3 era. Today, those studios are expanding, many have multiple teams, while the Indie push is another front that will bear fruit in the coming years, those developer relations can't be forged overnight.

One further point in regards to these threads in general, these manufacturer's are competing in an international marketplace, this is an international forum, is it not about time gamers (and US games journalists) quit talking about this or that console "winning", when in fact they're only referencing the US?

Pack (Pach?) it up, Sony, it's over. It was a good try.

The console that ships the most will likely win. Also, seeing as public perception is far more in favor of Sony than Microsoft and every indicator points to Sony shopping more units this year, this seems like a no-brainer. I guess that's why it's SHOCKING NEWS. Will this be Pachter's first correct prediction?
is there a consensus as to why the 360 comfortably beat the ps3 in the US?
Earlier launch and better price if I had to make a guess.

Xbox has a lot of mindshare and many will buy the next iteration with little research. I also think people will not abandon their friends list or online purchases so easily. And there is a huge subset of gamers who just play CoD/Madden and don't see any reason to abandon Microsoft since that's all they've known their entire gaming life. I personally think PS4 is a much better pickup, but I still think we won't see the effect of the PS4's advantages until several months when consumers start to notice the differences. I could see X1 winning this year, but then in 2014 Sony retaking holiday sales.

BUT ALL WILL FALL UNDERNEATH THE SHADOW OF THE 3DS

MS better start creating new dev teams asap then. Sony already had a lot of internal teams, that's why they could pump out game after game. MS doesn't have that luxury.

I've always thought that the desperation move for MS would be to buy Take Two.

They could do it for a bit over $2B (by far the cheapest major studio purchase available), and hot on the heels of crazy GTAV love they'd be able to market the fact that you'll only be able to play the next GTA game on Xbox One, and would also bring the following IP under the MS Studios umbrella:

- Red Dead
- Bioshock
- Borderlands
- 2K Sports franchises (notably NBA 2K)
- LA Noir
- Max Payne

And beyond acquiring a handful of high-profile (if somewhat aging) titles, they'd be getting Irrational Games (Bioshock 1&3) and Rockstar, studios with a great track record of creating first-rate IP.

Then they'd likely have a killer exclusive each year for the next four years lined up for the holiday season, with Halo 5 in 2014, Red Dead 2 in 2015, Bioshock in 2016, and GTA VI in 2017.

In between they'd be able to sprinkle in exclusive GTA V next-gen DLC (probably a Saints Row IV-style GTA 5.1, a Borderlands title, and maybe a Noir or a Max Payne title, or something new that Rockstar has been cooking up.

It would be somewhat of a masterstroke, because although those titles aren't necessarily the most profitable (think GTA V's likely $1.3B in sales, vs the ~$5B in sales that the COD franchise has done since GTA IV's release, not including COD Ghosts), they're very high-profile. And with Ryse and Quantum Break not looking to be the super-successful breakout exclusive IPs that MS clearly hoped they'd be, buying Take Two would be the easiest way to ensure that the Xbox One has a strong library of high-profile exclusives.

Combination of earlier release/cheaper/positive word of mouth/better performing games. All of those things are against MS this time. They'll probably price drop really early if they begin to fear losing NA.

Why are you reading my tag instead of the title of my post?
When are the NaughtyDogAnnounce- VGA's again? I suspect right around then is when we will start seeing people actually having an option of which console to buy besides what's simply on the shelf.

But the 360 had an earlier launch and better price worldwide so I'm just wondering what made the US different .

It's going to be boring and predictable. January NPD is where the fun starts if you're interested in that kind of stuff.

I'm very curious how well infamous will do in February. Anyone want to take bets on whether Sony will start promoting NPD results if they're on top every month?

I think PS4 will break all the launch history records in terms of sales.

I think your crazy.

How much did the Wii sell first month / 3 months?

The Wii was cheaper and easier to make and was hyped to hell and back pre release.

Then again since then years and years of apple products have trained the market that its ok to spend $500 on expensive non essentials so maybe that will help the PS4.

Wii sold around 600,000 in the first week or so, then was substantially supply constrained. This was in the USA, and I don't have any other statistics to compare to.

Wii have big supply issues... I think PS4 will have better supply at launch.

Wii shipped 3.08m in the first quarter (Nov-Dec).

Nintendo sold a bunch of Wii Us at launch. Selling launch units isn't hard. What happens in Jan, Feb, March etc is what's going to tell the full story. Has Pach said anything about who he thinks will be selling the most non-holiday/launch units?

Wii U didn't sell out at launch though. there were plenty available all day.
