Any EA/DICE game that ships at 720p on the PS4 will be a no-buy for me, especially when Sony's 1st party stuff is bringing it at 1080p out of the gate.

Also another great reason not to pre-order any 3rd party games at all, I'm waiting to see who brings it and who just gimps for parity.

true talk right here.

Single player focus is great when the games in question have good single player. Killzone and battlefield series aren't exactly the masters of that.

Yeah, I was speaking more in general. Indeed, I've tended to avoid shooters as a whole because of that. The Bioshock games and the Tomb Raider reboot are the only ones I've really spent a lot of time with this gen.

How much VRAM does the Xbone have?
1080p comes kinda free with 8GB GDDR5 doesn't it?
More VRAM = higher resolutions without massive performance hits.

This really is making my XO decision even harder.

Such a headache choosing again which one to get at release.

I want/expect decent performance for my money. What are we likely to see in 3 years time? That's the worrying part for me with the XO.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm not buying a single game with enforced parity unless we're talking about indie and small games that should easily be running maxed on both systems.

They are just over a month from going gold. At this point they will play it safe just to guarantee launch date.

Yeah, that's the one thing I can see making it difficult. Perhaps if we weren't already so close to launch, though it could potentially be effective to prevent it from happening in future titles.

Point the finger at MS and Sony for building next-gen consoles that can't even handle the graphical peak of PCs from 2011. Launch games can't even hit 1080p and it's fucking embarrassing.

Same as PS4, and PS4 doesn't have 8 GB vram it has 8 gigs ram for gpu and cpu purposes. So, it's 8 gigs total for system and graphics purposes.

What if the game has improved textures or higher quality AA or SSAO on the PS4? When is the extra effort put into the Sony version considered enough to justify a purchase?

To be fair, ALL Sony exclusives are running at 1080p, it just DICE didn't bother to push PS4, or being $$$$$$ to keep parity with X1.

I agree. - but to be fair it's a launch title that has a 60fps target and large scale so people need to adjust their expectations a bit. The hardware in the consoles is known and it isn't magic.

They've got 5 to work with for both CPU and GPU, basically, not 8 after all is said and done

Well seeing as how every console i can think of seemed to get much better performance out of games through the years after launch, i would imagine it will be the same deal here. Lets compare 360 launch titles with the likes of Gear 3, Halo 4 and Forza Horizon. Lets look at the PS3 launch titles and compare them to the likes of Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 or GOW3.

Why are we gauging the lifetime performance of a console based on the launch titles all of a sudden?

The Killzones have fantastic campaigns.
Battlefield was a stinker though, which has scared me off buying 4 until I hear that its got a good campaign.

Killzone 2( the one that i played) had a pretty underwhelming campaign. That game's saving grace is it's graphics.

1080P frame buffer doesn't use much space, 10's of MB depending on how many buffers and what type (i.e. FP16).

This is disappointing but I can deal with it. In the next couple of years I'll do a new build for SteamOS. Right now a 7970 is already significantly stronger than the PS4 GPU. The R9-290 looks absolutely awesome. A couple years that kind of performance will only be like $200. Steamroller or Excavator shouldn't matter, they'll both be more than enough for a gaming PC.

Mantle and SteamOS/linux are promising better performance and I for sure will be going Linux for my next gaming PC. Probably Linux Mint unless SteamOS has a fully functioning desktop then that might do. Last gen targeted 1280x720. I played at 1920x1080. This gen they're trying to target 1920x1080 with varying success but even then I'll still be playing at 1920x1080 so the performance hit with a higher resolution monitor probably won't be as bad as last gen.

The next gen consoles aren't powerhouses but if you're a multiplatform gamer PC/PS4 or PC/XboxOne then I guess it should be fine if you're really looking for that eyecandy. If only these were 3-4tflop machines. Imagine the next DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball on that.

Geez people, we're talking about rushed out launch titles. Compare the graphics of Call of Duty 2 to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

I'm sure more games in the future will look better and run in 1080p.

Edit: btw, probably could have made the game 1080p if people hadn't been so demanding about 60fps.

I will make the same comment I made in the Ubisoft thread.

Sony will deliver Killzone:SF, Driveclub, Knack, Resogun, and Infamous:SS all running at 1080p on the PS4. This sets the bar for the PS4 and clearly demonstrates that 1080p games are not only doable, but doable with very high quality graphics on the PS4.

If EA/DICE can't deliver games at 1080p on the PS4, then they aren't as good at game development as they think they are. If DICE can't deliver 1080p then they should ask Sony for help. Delivering a 720p or 900p game just shows that they don't have the proper skillset or they just don't care.

Everything is a case-by-case basis, but again, it's become enough of a concern to warrant not buying 3rd party titles until they're in the wild and gamers know what they're getting.

At this point, I'm just getting the console and waiting on reviews/general consensus/the DF verdict.

Actually is that true?

The 360 could only output a framebuffer from eDRAM. It could not from the unified memory. Does anyone know whether XBone has a similar constraint?

*Raises hand*

QUESTION!

Why are we freaking out at the first wave of games?

Because there is a console war going on! The narrative from some is that the X1 was weak and MS is paying for console parity, so they are holding back the PS4 version! Has nothing to do with devs getting a handle on new hardware which has traditionally been a rough transition in the past. It's what happens when two consoles are releasing in the same month.

Do you guys really think it's possible that Microsoft moneyhats third party developers to force parity on both platforms?

I always thought DICE were trying to be perfectionists in what they do, and stuff like this could really hurt their image.

Where do we have confirmation of PS4 games 1080p and 60fps?

KZ:SF multiplayer for example.

QUESTION!

Why are we freaking out at the first wave of games?

- Hardware makers overselling their shit (as usual)
- "In-engine" renders and PC footage used for promotion (as usual)
- x86 architecture with 8GB of RAM and off-the-shelf parts for both consoles
- The 360 came out 8 fucking years ago
- Killzone and Forza running at 1080p (and 60fps in Forza's case)

And so on.

TBH, though, I'm much more worried about the games themselves than what resolution they run at.

Same, a friend of mine ask me why I didn't pre order any games, to which I replied, "why should I? It's not like I won't be able to pick up any game I want in the stores". When was the last time people had a hard time finding a new game in stores?
I plan to play DC all the ftp stuff on PS4 at launch, it will give me time to see whats good and whats not. By the time I'm finished with those, I'll know if I'm going to get the full version of DC, and all the dust will have settled around the third party stuff.

Call of Duty 2 = 1280x720/30fps
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 = 880x720/60fps

So BF5 will look better than BF4 but be lower than 720p, or 720p once again?

Can someone post links from instances where it was proven that a multiplatform game was purposely "gimped" for parity? Cause i don't recall any myself.

Killzone.....1080p
DC............1080p
Knack.......1080p
Infamous...1080p
Resogun...1080p
vs

Forza........1080p
Ryse..........900p
KI...............720p
BF4............720p
DR3..........Dynamic shit

I think one party cheapened more than the other.

is this guy a shill? I'm pretty sure I've only seen him promote the ps4 and talk shit about the xb1.

why is he not banned like the Microsoft shill from the eurogamer or edge thread that said something positive about the xb1 and was banned immediately?

But that's not true? It's a shared pool of memory meaning it can be used as VRAM with a variable ratio? To some degree at least. Which in the end must mean that it has more available video memory if you want it to?

Amen to that.

I know it's not that easy, but Sony should really be pushing developers to get the best out of the PS4 with their games. Bring out the chequebook if necessary. The PS4 is going to be market leader meaning most of (in this case EA)'s customers will be on PS4. It will be in their best interests to ship the best product they can.

Pretty shitty if the PS4 version is purposefully held back. Frankly 720p for next-gen games is pretty sad.
