Bungie releases Destiny Trailer: "The Moon", beta coming [Up: Game release in Spring]

Have to say, after the lengths Bungie went to so they could stop making Halo games, I was expecting their next title to be something different than a sci-fi FPS.

That being said, the (Bungie-developed) Halo games are my favourite FPS series by far. Am really looking forward to this one, Bungie always deliver the goods.

So, nothing is stopping from getting your code from Amazon, entering it into your B.net account and then canceling your pre-order, right?

I want Destiny digital, damnit!

Someone with better knowledge may have to shed more light on this... but doesn't Bungie own everything Destiny related? They pretty much handed MS a goose that lays golden eggs with the Halo franchise.

I was really torn about which version to go with for Destiny so I ended up preordering both the PS4 and Xbox One versions. After I play the beta, I can decide which one to go with.

Even if I agreed with you about Reach, I would STILL say that Reach has better gunplay and movement than any action-oriented RPG. That's not a criticism of those existing games, but rather an observation about where the balance of resources goes (and that's in part because their existing audiences demand it).

That's a fair point, I suppose.

I guess, as someone who doesn't really lust for those action-orientated lootathons, that explains why I'm seeing this from a slightly different perspective. Perhaps it'd be unfair of me to compare Destiny's gunplay to the top tier, purified shooter because despite Bungie's talents they're essentially creating an RPG heavy experience. Ultimately there are going to be aspects of Destiny that shout much louder than the gunplay, but given my personal tastes I'll be keeping my ear to the ground and hoping for nothing unsavoury.

If the gunplay isn't striking a chord with me then Destiny might well fall into the chasm that the likes of Borderlands and Skyrim have long since plummeted; you can create as expansive a world as you like, if the central, driving mechanic doesn't have me wanting to repeat it ad nauseam then I'll probably lose interest before I can fully explore it.

For me Destiny looks to be a game that is defined by the people you play it with. I'll be on Xbox One for this one because that's where my friends are.

I don't like the gunplay in most "MMO" or "RPG" shooters - but I am drawn to the progression and social aspects, which always take first place in existing games at the expense of fun mechanics. So the fact that a trusted dev is making something like this with a near cast-iron guarantee of excellent gunplay and movement makes it attractive to me on principle.

Class.

I really hope this doesn't slip to fall. I was also hoping to see something more on even ground MP. It sounds like your character and everything that goes with it go with you into the MP world which is fine but I would like to see classic type, even ground MP that Bungie is known for.

The question I tried to pose to Dan Miller at PAX was from a similar place.
Lootathons, as you term them, generally doesn't encourage satisfying combat, at least in the traditional sense that you'd see in Halo.
Having a level playing field, rather than a slope of increasing power allows for interesting encounters that test your skill rather than a general slope of health & damage based difficulty that ties to your level, an enemies level or what equipment you're using.

My experience, in Borderlands 1 & 2 particularly, is of too little butter over too much bread, a case of zoom in, holding the right trigger down resulting in the game feeling boring and very few of the encounters being memorable, especially not for their combat.

All he could say in response (as far as I remember) was they had of course thought long and hard about it, and have their own solution, that it'd be up to us to decide if they succeeded or not. It was a boisterous night, ill suited for too deep a dev discussion.

all i'm hoping for is the game being good gunplay wise. i'm not really a fan of borderlands 2. lootathons really isn't my thing and the gunplay isn't as good as regular shooters. i have faith in bungie though, so they have my purchase for sure because they provided me with hundreds of hours of enjoyment in their halo games. the trailer was awesome

That's encouraging, I thought you were going to conclude that by saying they didn't really consider it an issue.

At least they're aware of it and have seemingly been proactive to resist such an outcome. And I think it's a great point and a great question; how does a game that's essentially about empowerment keep the rewards both impactful yet minimal.

I've long since abandoned hope for the player versus player side of the game, at least from a competitive standpoint. I mean, the whole 'bring all your loot across from the campaign' has never really worked for me in any capacity. I like my competitive environments to be dripping wet with a designer's touch.

I welcome Urk & co to state otherwise, but this is my feeling as well. I'm not a great competitive player (been more co-op focused since Reach), but I get where a lot of HaloGAF have been coming from in regards to Reach and Halo 4's competitive multi-player. Given the general structure of the game as we know it currently, I'm not sure how Bungie can make a competitive arena experience that's as balanced as Halo 2 and Halo 3. Granted, we don't know very much about Destiny's competitive portion, and Bungie's filled with people smarter than me, so there's hope, but I'd recommend tampering expectations on that front.

I'm more interested in the co-op & single-player portions of the game so even if the VS portion sucks, I'll hopefully have plenty of game to enjoy. As long as Bungie fills the game with great gunplay, fun-to-fight enemies, levels that are eminently replayable, and sticks in smooth internet co-op, I'll be happy.

Game looks amazing. In my opinion, it's well on track to become the next big franchise, and potentially replacing Halo.

It's interesting that the birth of two massively important franchise attempts coincide - Destiny to unseat Halo, and Titanfall to unseat CoD. Out of these attempts, Destiny feels much more solidly thought through and meticulously prepared. Everything adds up. Titanfall feels somehow much lighter and a bit like a rush job, bizarrely.

I'm getting DD too, but I pre-ordered at Amazon who doesn't charge you until they ship. I pre-ordered last night but I don't have the code yet. I'll just cancel my pre-order once I get it or shortly before release to play it safe.

Ha! Done.

Let's say I pre-order Destiny for Xbox 360 and for Xbox One at Gamestop... Will I get for both consoles beta access?

Would be great, if somebody could confirm this, if they have tried it already.

You'll get a code for both pre-orders, and you can pick which platforms you want to play on for both, prior to the beta.

Well I preordered for Xbox One. Really wish this was coming to PC, Bungie. I'm SO excited for this game, and it's only just around the corner!

I was afraid that the beta was not available in France but...

The beta is planned for february, did you heard something like this about the date ?

Can't wait for this. The recent podcast talking about how they're hand-crafting the weapons on the design side means that both of my biggest problems with Borderlands (garbage procedural loot diluting the experience and generally mediocre, spongy combat) might get solved with this game, and I already loved Borderlands.

Most of all, I think this will just be a world that I'm going to really enjoy getting lost in. I haven't really had that experience in a while, not since I dove into World of Warcraft for the first time...and this setting and tone is far, far more interesting to me than the Warcraft universe.

I hope that February beta date above is accurate. That's not far away.

uh so did anyone else receive 2 codes from Amazon? I pre-ordered the Xbox One version.
Yeah, I got one yesterday and then another this morning. Weird.

what the hell is this game? just borderlands with good graphics?

More like Borderlands devoid of color and humor with a giant pretentious stick up it's ass
Honestly that first trailer with a man telling his kid some epic tale of heroes or some such
I mean wow! You'd think it was Sci-Fi LOTR but it's more like Halo-Lands.

I hope I eat crow in Spring 2014 because there is a dearth of truly great games.

Have they specifially said it's not coming to pc? Cause I was still holding out hope.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a PC version if the game underperforms on consoles.

The game is an ambitious saga many years in the making. The proof will be in the pudding, but you can at least forgive them for billing this as something epic.

I highly doubt the game will not show up on PC at one point. This has been too expensive of an undertaking not to justify a PC release and recoup that investment.

Releasing on five platforms simultaneously might just be too much for Bungie, traditionally a single-platform developer.

This is definitely on my radar for next year. The Warlock class also sounds pretty badass.

Technological magic? Yes please.
