Phil Spencer: Xbone name "going to stick"; though isn't the most flattering name

I still can't comprehend how a bunch of executives can sit in a room and come up with the name Xbox One but not realize people will call it the Xbone.

Did they really think people would call it the One?

It was practically called that on here within minutes of them announcing it. It's really not hard to come to that abbreviation. And it serves it purpose fine. People are thinking too much into it if they feel it's used in a derogatory way. It is what it is; a shortened version of Xbox One. If people find it offensive, than it's their problem to get over it. I'm glad MS are at least acknowledging and embracing it.

Yes it is easier to say... though I do not use that phrase. I prefer to just call it by it's real name "Xbox One" or hell just Xbox. "Xbone" sounds kinda silly when you say it out loud, especially to non-gamers.

To be fair, Xbone only caught on because everything about the system since announcement has been one spoonful of refried shit after another. If the positions were reversed you can bet we'd be calling it 'The One' and calling the PS4 something marginally derogatory.

No, the name already came out the minute Xbox One name got leaked or something back then, nothing to do with DRM fiasco.

PS3 stll PS3 back then when its got negative feedback.

"Xbone" honestly has not gotten any traction in the wild in my circles. Although, I'm sure if I went into a busy Gamestop some kids would be giggling the name amongst themselves.

bone can be used as a term for dick, you know, how MS was dicking consumers in the ass with their original drm scheme.

The name was appropriate at a time before the policy reversal, and has stuck due to its simplicity and MS's baffling decision to keep bringing it up.

Also bonehead aka stupid.

I'm pretty sure we didn't know the name Xbox One until the reveal. Before that we thought it was Xbox Infinity or something.

Besides, the intent is derogatory. Let's not pretend it's 'just' an abbreviation.

Every time I see or say xbone I hear the music "Bad to the bone, ba ba ba bad, bad to the bone.".

I don't mind Xbox One but it doesn't really have a convenient shorthand that feels right when said out loud. Xbone is probably the best one actually. They should have just gone with 720. Then against that probably would have lead to 720p jokes.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
Every company should take a group of teenagers and tell them their idea for a product name. If they can come up with an unflattering nickname within ten minutes, change the name.

Three different groups:
Toddlers, Graders and Teenagers.
Better coverage.

So basically it's 'technically' correct? Isn't that the... well, you know.

But seriously, they had Xbox Infinity. THEY FUCKING HAD XBOX INFINITY. Fuck, man, so they took 2006 Sony's strategy cock-up, and Nintendo's naming cock-up (we could've had Super Wii!), and merged the two cock-ups into the ultimate cock-up supreme.

That's actually pretty damned impressive.
people will just call it the xfinity cable box

Well that's kind of bullshit considering people freely admit that they use it because of what MS did when introducing the console. You may not use it in that way but you can't say that people who see it as a negative name are just being paranoid. And I'm not some apologist, I use 180 which I consider worse than Xbone. But I find it clever yet accurate. Xbone just sounds stupid to me but people can call it whatever they want.

Yep, Xbone rolls off the tongue, and differentiates the console way better than the consoles ACTUAL name. That's why it will stick, because MS were too stupid to realise that Xbox One can also refer to Xbox 1, sorry, The Original Xbox. It doesn't sound stupid like the Wii U, but in terms of practicality, it is VERY stupid. What do they call their next console? Will there even be one?

It is annoying how people use it all the time but it is microsofts fault. If they had been clear about their digital policies people might have been more kind.

Come on Phil... I have 3 kids!! My wife and I went through EVERY ridiculous nickname, initials, etc there could be. I'm sure we missed some but we had the work cut out for us. Any new product should do the same.

What's your kids' names? I'm sure I can do something with them. =)

I think it is funny because I believe they expected people to call it THE ONE like it is the holy messiah of consoles.

The Xbox one name is pretty bad to begin with but it's catching on. The worst misstep Microsoft had by far is not making the performance on par with the competition. The gap should have been minuscule and no one would have cared but it weighs heavily into which console I'm gonna get. At least the price should be the same.

I don't know why people think they're being clever when saying they like Xbox 180. They reversed stance because of stuff you bitched about and now you're going to try to make fun of it? It reeks of being a 13-year old.

I always type it as XB1 because that just seems like the best way to shorten it. My brother calls it Mexbox Juan and I have no idea why.

Reminds me of Homer going through names for Bart in The Simpsons

Marge: Homer, I've been thinking... if the baby's a boy, what do you think of the name Larry
Homer: Marge, we can't do that! All the kids'll call him Larry Fairy!
Marge: Well, how about Louie?
Homer: They'll call him Screwy Louie!
Marge: Bob?
Homer: Slob.
Marge: Luke?
Homer: Puke.
Marge: Marcus?
Homer: Mucous.
Marge: What about Bart?
Homer: Let's see.. Bart, Cart, Dart, Eart... nope can't see any problem with that!

Yeah? I wanted them to do the 180 so I could buy the console. They did the 180. They did a few 180s. I call it the 180 because they shouldn't have had to do it in the first place. I'm rewarding their 180s by buying the console. As a paying customer I should be able to use 180 as a reminder that they fucked up and got it back together. Way better than not having them change, not calling it 180 and subsequently not buying the console.

I heard that in Japan they have even got a more unflattery nickname for the XBO, something to do with divorce or something.

I found the name was perfectly fitting when they announced all these grandiose plans of a everything in one internet box. After their 180, I don't even think about it. It may resurface, if I see lots of games requiring internet verification to even play(ie cloud power).

Same deal with "The new iPad"
Such an absurd name for a tablet.
