Dragon Quest 1-8 coming to smartphones.

I'd consider buying 1-3 and 8 for iOS. Much rather have 1-3 on 3DS VC or PSN or something instead but I guess I'll take whatever legit version of the game I can get.

You know, DQXI on Vita exclusive can resurrect the handheld. But SE would rather go mobile.

I say Sony money hats them now before it's too late like with FFXV!

Or Nintendo should money hat them before it's too late.

Pokemon X/Y
Monster Hunter 4
DQXI

What are you waiting for Nintendo!?
That would probably be an expensive money hat.
just think of all the young iOS only gamers (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc) who can now play this series!

How many Japanese gamers(including casual ones) haven't played DQ or couldn't have gotten their hands on it easily before?

If this is the only way I can get DQ7R in english I'll take it.

SE doesn't really seem to care about DQ in the west and I doubt this is going to change much.

In terms of gameplay, RPGs are a good fit for smartphones. Not really hindered by limited input the way more action-orientated games would be.

The problem is when you want to actually invest any decent amount of time into them without setting your hands on fire or chewing up battery you want to use for actual phone functionality.

I think it's funny how people are all up in arms about these announcements. I don't get it.

DQ is now available to a wider market. But it's on smartphones so it's bad?

What's with all the bitching? Who cares if past games get ported, if they announced the next DQ game was exclusively on phones I could understand the hate but this? Whatever.

DQ8 re-release...maybe there is a chance.
Same, it's a testament to how shitty SE became this gen. We're hoping for a DQ8 HD remake/port. Or for Nintendo to pick up SE's slack on find in them to bring over DQ7 3DS sometime during the second half of 2014. Yeaaaa.

That's... never going to happen with DQ. At least not with how they've historically handled the franchise. Multiplatform is one thing, going for an exclusive on underperforming hardware is quite another.
Yeah, I know the series goes to the most successful platform, but just saying it'll bring the Vita to life IF it happened.

It's got selling power.

Yeah, it's bad that it's unplayable. Seriously, phones are getting troubles to not die after a day. I don't want to play on a platform that gaming usage would prevent me to use it for the first thing I bought it.

If DQVII on cellphones gets localized SE better bring the 3DS version too.

I didn't noticed this, but 3DS owners must be feeling with DQ7 what us Vita/PSP owners feel with all this Agito/Type-0 stuff. Although al least we are getting positive signs of Type-0 localization.

It hurt more because I played ff type 0 using the Chinese patch lol.... I can't play dq7r in a language I understand.....

How does Japan feel about this, or what's their reaction to it?
Cuz DQ 1-3 at least were re-released on the Gameboy Color, can't access the link in the OP, but any word on an English release, Android ver. and if the games are iPad compatible?

What if you have both like me? :(

*cry*

Although SE opened the Pandora's box, Reggie and NoA may be that slight ray of hope DQVII may still get published here.

It's not just that it's a smart phone game now.

It's a Square Enix smart phone game.

One of these days we will see Final Fantasy or something similar as an entirely microtransaction based game.

I have both, but I barely use the 3DS other than for Mario, Zelda and Fire Emblem and I was never a fan of DQ7.

But DQ8.... that hurts..

They should totally redo Dragon Quest 1-7 with that engine they used to remake Final Fantasy 5 for Smart Phones.

I'm really confused by this response in this thread, particularly towards the people saying this is a bad business decision based on Dragon Quest - a Japanese game franchise that typically only sells gangbusters to Japanese - on a platform that is currently the most popular gaming platform in Japan - smartphones. This makes tons of business sense, and 3ds hasn't earned the right for DQXI to hit its shores. While popular, it's not nearly as popular as mobile, and this could very well be the turning tides that turn mobile in to an actual platform that gets A games, as opposed to...C games you play on the toilet that aren't Puzzles and Dragons.

In the end, everyone wins: people who want mobile to be a legitimate gaming platform with quality titles, as well as people who like Dragon Quest.

Hasn't earned... the right? DQM and DQVII remakes sold a lot (~900k each) and DQM2 is coming too.

Yeah and you can bet your horse these fuckers won't be traslated inspite of them all haveing a translation.

Really, I could care less about the platform, just allow me to read them.

Because quality may suffer and be a major step back from its predecessors...and fall into the evil trappings of IAPs + microtransactions.

Pretty much this, I'm completely fine with a release on smartphones. Sure, it might not be the most ideal, but it's better than nothing and I've been wanting to play Dragon Quest 8 for years now.

Pretty much. As Aeana has repeatedly pointed out, going forward, DQ can't sustain exclusivity and it's a pretty safe assumption to think we'll see more and more games ported to and from mobile.

In itself, it doesn't take anything from anyone. Hell, it probably creates opportunities for developments and localizations we wouldn't have seen otherwise.

I can understand being very wary of the egregious F2P model but going by FF remakes, I'd say these remakes are safe.

I wonder if they would even split up the game to milk the fans even more...

Like first part is free, and every part costs money. That would be so awful :(

I have the ds parts and am looking forward for part 7on 3ds, but these decisions are making SE fall apart. Fans dont give a shit anymore.
Mobile game dont care which companies are doing the games.

Ah yes, quality. The thing people argued when DQIX was announced for the ds. It couldn't possibly be as good as VIII.

And it kicked VIII's ass. So there's that.
Don't think so. You're the first I heard claim IX was better than VIII!

IX had no story, no interesting characters, no personality, etc, etc. But don't want to derail the thread with that discussion.

The bottom line is, fans, western fans who love the series in this case, wants to see another numbered DQ game in the same vein as DQVIII. Like Ni no Kuni, but DQ, and not a MMO.

Well if they are not coming to Vita and since they are turn based I'd rather have them on my Note 2 then on 3DS i won't be buying.

Jesus....

I can understand the decision from a businessperspective but at least port the games over to some handheld... Fuckin touchscreen controls suck :-(

Square enix really knows how to treat their die hard fans!
