Super Mario 3D Land is SO good

Yeah, 3D Land is great, and GAF was shitting on it all the way up to release as though the team behind Mario Galaxy was going to magically make a bad Mario game.

You probably shouldn't. They're both pretty amazing games.

It awesome , the later levels are some of the best.

Buy both, Kid Icarus is just one of the best for the 3ds, the voice acting in the game is just gold.

I will anyway, just wanted to know which one I should put as a priority. ;)

This so much. I don't like any of the 3D marios. I didn't think I would, and then this came out and I played it like this the entire time :D.

3DWorld is probably my most anticipated game this year.

While I actually ended up enjoying a number of the 3D Marios (Galaxy 2 is an awesome game in itself), 3D Land was definitely more along the lines of what I imagined when Mario would go 3D, and was like a dream come true by the time I finally got to play it.

So needless to say, 3D Land is my clear and away favorite 3D Mario game at the moment, with my only qualms being the rather lackluster boss battles (except for that final Bowser Battle climb with that awesome OST).

And I'm fully expecting 3D World to overtake that spot by the end of the year.

I did finish it, it's not as long as other Mario games. I'm fairly certain of that because I played and finished most of them.

Have you ever played handheld Mario games? Like Super Mario Land 2, Super Mario Land 3 (Wario Land), Wario Land 2, etc?

Can't speak for the other two, but Super Mario Land 2 is probably no longer than 3D Land. I would say it's probably a little shorter in the long run. If I recall, it had six worlds, and some of those worlds were 3-4 blocks, and then the seventh boss level with Wario, which was rather short, too.

I haven't finished it yet. It was my first 3DS game.

The same day a friend let me borrow Fire Emblem: Awakening and that stole SM3DL's thunder so that may kind of explain why, but even before that I wasn't feeling it.

That comparison isn't fair, since FE:A would do that to any game.

Same thing happened to me. I came back to 3D Land and was amazed at how good it was!

Its a game that seems perfectly designed and built around the 3DS, with everything from the fixed camera, to the special 3D stuff, to the short timed levels.
Which is why it is so disappointing that 3D World is just lazily taking this 3ds framework and slapping it on to the Wii U.

have you seen the new trailer? it looks amazing. If it's as good as 3D Land then they can take all my money.

It was one of the first 3DS games I got, along with a few others, and I only got to world 6 before I put it aside for a long time.

Started playing it again after the SM3DW hype started and it really is a remarkably well designed game. The gameplay is excellent, with quite a few creative moments that caught me off guard, and it's one of the only games that really looks great in 3D. I don't know why I never paid much attention to it when I first got it, but I'm really glad I decided to revisit what is arguably the best game on 3DS.

Maybe I'll try galaxy 2.

I say, if you go into it with the same type of "open mind" that was required for playing Yoshi's Island the very first time? You'll likely enjoy it!

And in a nutshell, that's what most of the 3D Mario games did more to remind me of: extensions of the YI formula. Right down to how the emphasis was placed on collecting even more than before, temporary power-ups/transformations and the like.

All very good and fun in their own right, but again, 3D Land pleased me more because it was a delightful return to what I love best about Mario. The classical Mario art by Yoichi Kotabe is just the icing on the cake!

I feel like the only Nintendo gaffer that didn't like it and actually prefer NSMB2. :/ Not the worst Mario game I've played (that would be the original NSMB on DS) but I was really disappointed with it.

I'm looking forward to 3D World though.

Did you miss the memo? Everyone loves 3d world now.

It was pretty boring and underwhelming. I got to the 'ending' just because I forced myself. The game got slightly better after that part, but not enough to dramatically sway my opinion.

I wish that I shared the same high opinion of it that the rest of GAF did. It's a great game but it's not anywhere near the same tier as Mario 64 and Galaxy for me. It felt like a bare bones 3D Mario game for those that don't like the adventure style of 64 and Galaxy.

Hopefully Nintendo decides to do a full Mario adventure again at some stage. The trailer for the Wii U iteration looked good but the slower pace and less open style doesn't look like its for me. Glad you guys are enjoying it though.

I feel the same way. It's cool that Nintendo made a game based on the mini games from Mario Sunshine (despite having less moves and worse controls), but its high time for the next generation of Mario.

No motion controls/waggle instantly makes it better than Galaxy(s).

Not having to press B to run (despite the 3DS already having an analog stick!!) make the Galaxy games instantly better.

I liked it more than other 3D Marios mainly because it brought back classic Mario-style gameplay instead of that star-hunting silliness.

Heh, I must be in the minority that didn't really like Super Mario 64. Maybe it was the finicky camera, or the fact that I played it when I was young and not very good at video games yet.

3D Land is pretty great though.

This style of 3D with 2D-esque layout and digital movement works so well. It's very different from SMG and I love it almost as much. Can't fucking wait for Nov 22

Somehow the levels feel like dioramas or something, which sounds like if should feel phoney and unimmersive, but I love the toy-like feel it gives the game

Poor 2DS owners won't get to experience the jump down the waterfall in 3D.

Poor 2DS owners won't get to play the game properly. This is quite literally the only game that forced me to use 3D to play it well. I never use 3D, but this game required it of me.

There were a couple of parts where it helped, but they were doable without it. 98% of the time I had it in 2D mode

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Agreed, OP. To me, best Mario game ever released behind Galaxy.

I'm playing the 2nd half of the game in 2D and not having any problems at all.

I like it, but not in the same way I enjoy 64, Sunshine or Galaxy. It's fun in small bursts, playing levels.. which is how it was designed, I guess. It's a portable game. If you're used to playing through Mario games in half a day sessions, it can be kind of dull.

I still think Mario Galaxy 2 is perfect and the pinnacle of the series. Mario 3D Land only falters for its really easy first chunk. Still a fantastic game though

This was one of the first games I get with my XL, despite that friends had warned me not to. I am a massive Galaxy, 64, and Mario Bros fan, and was really excited to try it. To me the game just moved way too slow and the enemies posed no threat. I forced myself to play through a few worlds and was just bored to death.

Meanwhile, Galaxy blew me away when I played it and excited me all the way through. Mario Bros games are always fun because of the arcade mechanics. I think they tried to do both in this one but it did not work for me. 3D World though, that looks incredible.

I found the shadowing in the game to be so poor that I needed the 3D to properly judge my jumps/landing.

I could see that. I played the first half of the game in 3D and thought it was great, but the XL's viewing angles for 3D are so bad I can't play in 3D for this game.

Lol at some of these claims of it being better than 64...its great and definitely refreshing...proved the 3DS's 3D effects quite well...the quick levels were addicting...i was compelled to gain everything...that being said I felt that same compulsion for both 64 and Galaxy which were both better...

Without the first half of the game I'd probably out it almost on par with the two Galaxy games. Falls a bit short though, but still easily the #3 3D Mario game in my opinion.

If 3D World doesn't suffer from the same problem it should be amazing.
