Project CARS (crowdsourcing) racing sim by Slightly Mad Studios (fully funded 3.75M)

Quick question: I snagged a Junior membership to Project CARS (mostly because I just wanted to check it out), I've never been able to access much. I seem to only be able to try a couple cars and a couple tracks. And my image quality is way lower than any screenshot or video posted of the game.

I'm running a GTX 670 and a 3770k so I'm pretty sure I should be able to get some more eye candy. Is the limited selections/options due to being the lowest level in funding?

How?! D:

Has anyone tried the recent updates? I just started it up after a while, and though I didn't find an anti-aliasing option that made me happy and got rid of shimmering besides DS9X (which kills framerate even on a GTX770), the physics seem pretty cool. I think the Formula C is one of the current cars under focus, and the forum should have some others that have tires or setups that are being tested. As always, if you have an existing setup make sure to delete it before trying the car.

With the Formula C I felt like I was able to feel the car sliding and recover it sometimes, which is always nice.

DS9X is unplayable unless you are running two or three Titans ;) Don't go higher than 4 (6) and combine it with either the SMAA or FXAA, but better ask someone in the screenshot thread.

Formula C, I have not tested today's changes, is the tire with the newest stuff implemented (based on the tire data they received) and it felt really good last week, so hopefully this weekend, in between the Singapore F1 watching, I have some time to test the latest changes out.

Also them adding the "CryEngine puddles creating/drying" after watching that CE trailer was pretty cool, looks great in game!

Yeah I saw some mention of puddle stuff, but having rain/puddles/reflections hurts my performance more than anything else so I avoid rainy weather. :p

And DS9X was playable at 35-40 fps with the GTX 770, though of course I wouldn't recommend it in general. :p

I need impressions of someone who has Radeon 7970 [ordinary of GHz]. How is game running in 1080p, everything on max [moderate AA], multiplayer, 20 cars?

@markao I know, right?! For me, additional eye candy is like the proverbial tree falling in the forest.

That video is pretty impressive though. Someday we'll have the horsepower to put real atmospheric simulation in our race sims. Faked is a good start however!

I've been following the development of this game for a while now, and I must've watched every video on youtube about it. It really looks impressive, but I've never had a "gaming" pc before. What kind of horsepower would it take to run this game at 60fps in 1080p? Could you get by with a sub $1000 machine to run it at those specs? Sorry, but I'm really not up on pc gaming tech.

It's being optimized with every build, so it's hard to say. How you race also affects what kind of performance you get as well. If you're racing with 30+ cars on screen in a thunderstorm, you'll be lucky to survive that even with Titans from what I've seen. I'm running it at 1920x1080 with pretty much everything at highest (using the DS2X AA option I believe) with a GTX570 and a Phenom 2 X4 955 and it runs pretty well for the most part. Not at 60, but as far as I can tell it's definitely above 30.

We won't really know until it's final. I have a GTX 770 and a 3570k and I think the combination can run some of the simpler stuff at 60 fps, 1680x1050. But, rain or reflections or downsampling or dusk/dawn can still hurt that performance currently.

Yeah, that article really shows how much is going into just the art direction alone. It's amazing, and hopefully this type of development bleeds into other simulation games of all sorts.

SMS really are lifting the PC sim racing genre to new graphical heights. Glad to be a member of pCARS 8)

As told above, itr depends of configuration and optimization that's yet to be done. I can run the game 55-60fps with 16 cars, at 1080p on medium/high settings and the game still looks fucking ace. That with a HD6850+2500k. I'm guessing maxing the game at 1080p, 60fps, will require top of the line hardware. However, until launch we will not know.

Thanks for the replies. What I'm taking away from them is "it's gonna take more than a grand's worth of pc". I've been wanting to get into pc sims, and with Project CARS an Assetto Corsa around the corner I was hoping to spring for a capable computer in the next few months. Just thinking about the prospect of picking out an appropriate pc makes me dizzy.

If sim racing is your big reason for wanting a PC, I'd wait a little longer still. Maybe at least til Nvidia's new cards early next year. You'll be able to get more power for the buck, which you'll need for pCars at least, it seems.

Not sure when these games are coming out, either. Is there any sort of idea on that? Sometime mid 2014 or so?

You can definitely run it so it looks beautiful with a sub-$1k PC (unless that includes a monitor and accessories), but if you really want a benchmark you'll have to wait until it's released proper. AC will probably be easier on a PC in terms of performance but once again, it's hard to tell until it's out.

If you can run it well for under a grand, that's great news. It would probably be sometime in early February (tax refund season here in the states) before I'm ready to splurge. I don't need a monitor as I was planning on hooking it up to my plasma. I'm just jonesin' to have something new to use my Fanatec wheel with. :)

You can have a great and slick experience with that money. You will not experience max settings. Some people think if it's not max settings, the game is ugly. It is not, it's still the most gergeous racing game you will find, by a long shot.

Comparison of one lap between Project CARS and the real life, both with the Formula Gulf 1000 at the Dubai Autodrome. The Formula Gulf 1000 is one of the cars that most improved in the latest builds, so it has been chosen for the comparison.

I'm surprised by how accurate the track lenght is compared to the real thing.
I don't follow any Project Cars news since I'm not really into racing sims but this looks great.

Azure Coast now has people, a helicopter, a jet, and (I think) new water. Maybe some new 3D trees. Maybe some BBQ smoke though I didn't see it.

Unfortunately I was getting a weird horizontal tearing-esque effect no matter what I tried -- D3DOverrider, ingame vsync, making sure my monitor was set to primary, forcing it in the nVidia control panel...not sure what was up. Hopefully it's fixed itself now.

That whole rain session looked terrible. It looked like you was driving around the track with lines falling from the sky. The rain and road didn't match, rain with car didn't match, and weather conditions and sound didn't match, it was like you drove the car in clear weather conditions.

Needs windshield reflections..

Are we also getting any customization/tuning in the game?
More interested in the performance side..

Any way you can upload this to something like Mega at 60fps or at least at the framerate you play at? Youtube videos don't do these justice.

I thought with Steam Family Sharing beta more people might be able to play this game. It doesn't appear in other peoples libraries though :(. I wanted to show a friend and it didn't appear.

Seeing the game is not out yet, I'm not surprised it does not work, specially with the account (member status) verification.

There is also a new fan made (hybrid.art) trailer doing the rounds on the interwebs:
