It's $300 less than the previous high end 15" though? Compared to the old "best" 15" rMBP you get

Better CPU
Better GPU('s)
Better PCIe Flash
Better battery life

Seems ok to me Value wise. for $599 more you get double ram, double flash & CPU bump as well as just the GPU...

The weird thing is if you spec the base 15" out to the same spec as the high end, it's the same price (well, $1 cheaper) , but you get no dGPU.

How come both the 15rMBP are of the same weight, one with and the other without the 750GT?

HEARTILY.

Are you here to be the eternal bane of all apple threads form now on? I just don't see why you would spend your whole day coming in here to troll and bash apple, your posts before and during the live stream are very telling, you clearly enjoy it. You probably beat off to this shit.

I have a N7. It's fine; a great cheap tablet with a nice screen. But it's going to get a lot less use once I get a new iPad.

And it definitely doesn't have a 'better App Store '.

What are you doing with the computer? I'd say for a huge majority of people the i5 is more than sufficient. It's a hundred dollar upgrade, no?
I'm mostly going to be doing some web/software development with it. I'll also be using Bootcamp or a virtual machine to use some Windows things. Though most likely I'll install W8 on Bootcamp for VisualStudio.

The price is why I'm not sure if I should go with the i7 or not.

Whilst Apple tablets rock, this post is correct.

N7 is better with specs etc.

Apple ruins it with design, despite N7 now being sleek as hell and a better App Store.

The nexus 7 is not better with specs however, where are you getting this from. Price is a huge advantage in it's favour, but the a7 should easily wipe the floor with the s4 pro in the nexus 7, ram is not comparable as the operating systems are completely different, I detest when people use that point in androids favour when directly comparing specs. Ios performs far far better with less ram than android, android requires more ram in general. The mini had 512mb and an a5 processor and was a far smoother and snappier experience than the nexus 7 2012 which had 1gb ram.

So is there any good reason to get an air over a 13" rMBP?

For $200 and 0.5 lbs more you get:
2.4ghz Non-ULV processor vs 1.3ghz ULV
Intel Iris vs HD 5000
Thunderbolt 2
Retina screen
Additional thunderbolt port
HDMI port

you only have the effective real estate of 1280x800 like the older, non-retina MBP. The air gives you a much more physically usable 1440x900 (IMO).

Actually it gives you a choice of what you'd like your logical resolution to be:

Very excited for the retina Mini, hope it releases next month in The Netherlands as well, wasn't expecting the A7 so that's great news.

I use my Air with an i5 for dev stuff and it's more than fine. I dunno how much it'll be when VMing Windows things, someone else may have to comment on it.

If you have the extra money, why not? I just decided against it to upgrade the SSD and RAM.

Yep, you can run it all the way up to an effective 1680x1050 by default, or even higher with a small tool. It's sweet to be able to mirror fully to a 1080p TV, or even 1:1 mirror with my 1600p monitor!

nope, you can choose how much space you want in the DPI scaling (and it does a great job at any level!)

I would never grab an Air over a MBP, love the pro line just too much. But I think 13" are just to weak for anything but general photo editing, I'm grabbing a 15" with the 750m as soon as I can afford it post wedding.

Edit: wow beaten badly.

You truly have a gift to displaying your opinions in the most obnoxious way possible.

Here’s the thing. The N7 is pretty good. I’ve been using one full-time for 2 weeks. The screen is gorgeous. reading tweets and mobile Gaf and RSS feeds is fine.

And yet the overall experience still feels like a second class experience compared to the one year old ipad mini.

There are fewer decent apps that actually feel like more than smartphone apps.

The zooming and scrolling performance - even on 4.3 - is still not as fluid as the old iPad mini or an iPad 3.

battery drain while sleeping is way, way worse than on iOS, so it needs to be plugged in more frequently and more care needs to be taken about which apps are running.

There are tradeoffs for all devices. The N7 has the best price and is more portable, but it really does not feel as nice or work as smoothly as the mini. And the screen size and AR means that apps are more crammed - like iphone apps - than ipad apps. It feels like a more constrained device.

I know you don’t give a shit about these things and you just like to troll. But for anyone else who has not used iPads or Nexus 7 devices, it’s not a cut and dry case for the cheaper, higher spec'd Nexus. You really need to play around with both for extended periods of time and figure out just what you want to do with one of these before you say the N7 is the leader in the category. I do not think it’s that simple.

When you use a resolution that isn't a multiple of the native res, are there any visible artifacts from the scaling?

I love my HTC One, as I feel Android fits better on a handset.

Yet iOS seems to be a lot better on a tablet than Android.

I hate having a split ecosystem going forward, but its hard to argue w/ the app selection on the iPad.

The N7 went up in price with the 2nd gen.

Sort of. They launched the N7 at $200 for an 8GB model. Then Amazon basically bomb-shelled the rest of the cheap tablet market 2 months later by stating that they were moving the base to 16GB and still starting at $200. Several companies including Google had to readjust their pricing as a result so they dropped the 8GB model and moved the 16GB down to $200 from $230.

The Kindle Fire line did increase this gen though.

I think I'm just going to have to accept the fact that I will never own a current or up to date macbook pro or air. I want it, but I don't think I'll ever be able to afford it.

I ordered the 750M rMBP today. I'm upgrading from a 2010 MBP so it should be a massive jump in power.

My wife is going to get me the iPad Mini for the birthday but I'm yet to decide on 128GB or 16GB.

How is last year's Mini with iOS 7? My mom wouldn't care about retina, but sluggishness could be a dealbreaker...

And where are the crazy deals of fourth-gen iPads?

Memory is an issue, you can't really run anything in the background and tabs in Chrome have to reload all the time as you switch. Other than that it performs well enough.

Not really any 'sort of' about it: once they got done screwing over everyone who bought the 16gb first gen after only 3 months, the first gen 16gb was 199. The 2nd gen 16gb was $230. So the price went up.

Forgot about the Kindle, though I tend to lose track about which model is which these days.

I'm in a similar boat with a 2010 13" MBP. How big of a jump will the $1499 retina pro be in terms of performance? Since I went Apple, I know squat about processors. We just bought my wife an i7 Vaio and it's snappy as hell, however, I'd like another Apple for myself, but I wonder if the i5 leaves a bit to be desired. Thoughts?

The 16gb Nexus 7 from 2012 was $199 in July 2013. The 32gb Nexus 7 from 2013 is $239. There isn't really a "sort of" here unless you want to argue that it's not as bad as a $70 price increase like the iPad mini.

Even then, I'm on the side that the $30 increase seemed to be for profit, especially with the mediocre QC on some units.

The CPU doesn't change. If you need the extra SSD space, get it. Otherwise upgrade the $1299 version to 8GB of RAM and leave it at that.

The iPad air branding is still a mystery to me. In the Mac line air denotes the less powerful in favor of portability line. In the mobile line mini has meant same experience but smaller and friendlier. I think a pro/larger iPad is basically a foregone conclusion now. I mean, right? Right?!?

I should have stated that I'll be coming from a 2.4 ghz Core 2 Duo. I was mainly concerned about how big of a difference there was between that and the i5.

This is the thing I'm looking forward to when I get my rPro. The 15" has one even higher than the 13".

Can't wait to get myself a 15" rPro. Going all out this time. Not upgrading again for 3 years at least. 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, Quad-core i7 and Iris Pro with discrete GPU. $2,599.

Side note: On the Apple Store you can configure a lower end 15" to the same price as the higher end, but the one difference being no discrete GPU. What an odd oversight. I'd hate to accidentally order that specification.

Massive performance increase. Geekbench is about three times higher between the Mid-2007 MBP and last year's 13" rMBP.

Alrighty, so with a student discount, A 13" Retina MBP w/ 8GB of RAM & 256GB SSD comes out to $1399. This will be my graduation gift! Plus my family contract is up on December 1st so I'm getting myself a 5S. Put Apple up in my veins.
