Smash Bros. Fans: Do You Want DLC?

So to the people who are saying no, you're reasoning is because of some other developers nickel and diming fans? How is that fair?

If Brawl had DLC, maybe Mewtwo would be in the game as he was cut last minute.

It surprises me that people wouldn't want to see additional characters and stages as DLC. I think that would be pretty awesome and is a huge missed opportunity all around. No reason to think Sakurai is going to skimp on content for the base game for the sake of DLC.

No as every game doesn't need it. The past couple games have been pushed with all kinds of extras, for free, as it was prior to 2007. Anyone else would have charged $5 per character or stage. Or per two song pack for that matter. As long as they make the best game they can with no thoughts of dlc it'll be fine.

Exactly. DLC could be the beginning of a cheapen out Smash.

I wouldn't mind it, but I can't help but feel like it'd go like this:

Sakurai: "Would you like DLC?"
Fans: "Sure, I'll have it."
Sakurai: *DENIED*

As long as it doesn't mean releasing a half-assed product first time around, I'm fine with DLC. But I'm more interested in having a great game out of the box, with a great selection of characters and stages. DLC would just be a nice bonus. Especially veterans that were dropped and have lost representation (Wolf, Roy, Pichu, Mewtwo etc.)

The only bottleneck I see is the 3DS. Isn't that why they have to show concern over which characters they choose for maximum parity between the two versions?

I mean, I have complete faith they'll do the responsible thing and put the game on the 4GB cartridges (unless they now come in 8GB?) so the Wii U version doesn't get gimped on content. I mean, for all the hate SSBB gets: game demos, fully rendered cutscenes, a (very very basic entry into the foray of online gaming), a timeline of all first party game releases on Nintendo consoles. That game packed the dual layer Wii disc like sardines. However, DLC would have to be developed for both consoles in tandem, which means they'll also need an account system so when you purchase on one console it shows up on the other.

Now, I'm all for the idea for DLC if it ensures Nintendo has to implement a quality account data management system, but seeing as how hesitant they were to adopt DLC (to be fair they are doing it right in shipping a full, quality game, and this is content developed AFTER the game has shipped), I wouldn't be surprised if they drop the idea of DLC entirely just so they can avoid accounts for as long as possible.

I think people are overestimating how quickly DLC could be developed and pushed out the pipeline. Whose to say Namco will stick around with Sora after the game ships if Sakurai does decide on DLC content?

I like the idea as long as it was handled well.

It would need to be clearly developed after the fact. As in "we had more ideas for the game but couldn't squeeze it all in time for release". No "Day One" dlc, I hate that crap. If it was ready upon release then include it in the game.

Reasonable prices would be the next deal breaker. Also, force the dlc update to everyone regardless of if they pay for it so that if I buy Protoman I can play against my friends who haven't.

How does DLC even work with Nintendo? There is no account so is the DLC now tied to the console? Would that mean if I bring it to my brothers house to play I have to leave behind the characters I paid extra for?

I would love new character DLC. This is the sort of game that keeps my friends and I occupied for a long time, so new characters would make it that much better.

No, they should just release a content rich game and move on. Patches could be great though.

What? They can release a game full of content, then still release dlc , you know that right.

Smash is a game that lasts an entire generation cycle, and new things come out that can be added to smash, new ideas arrive, and maybe they didn't have dev time for it. Make it dlc, dlc isn't a big bad monster. People who abuse it are.

This is... a really stupid statement.

Hey I dont want smash DLC because it will make me feel funny, so you all cannot derive joy from smash dlc I'm sorry.

How does it cheapen anything, it will just add longevity to game that is supposed to last an ENTIRE GENERATION each time it comes out. This boogie man you have imagined isn't real

Yeah but it has to integrate into the main game perfectly. Owners of vanilla SSB must be able to play against the characters, see the costumes of, and generally interact with things they did not buy personally.

EXPANDING CONTENT TO KEEP THE GAME ALIVE!?

NOT IN MY NINTENDOES!

seriously people, good DLC would be good DLC. Bad DLC would be... something you don't even have to get in the first place.

If it's free, of course. If it's not, it should be something substantial like NSLU. I don't want Smash Bros. getting the PSASBR treatment.

Where did I say that?

This attitude is really ass. If you want to reply, do so, but quit the condescending bs.

Nintendo fans should be outraged that it's taken Nintendo this long to start getting up to speed with its online services, not glad.

Nintendo fans are killing Nintendo just as much as Nintendo.

I'm all for DLC to add more content to a game that likely won't see a sequel in the same generation. I don't see the cons here. This isn't the kind of game where you have to worry about further sequels and such in the near future, so DLC could be a great way to add more to the game.

Realistically, I don't think it'll happen though. The fact that it's developed mostly by Namco makes it pretty likely that there won't be a team to make DLC after the game is done...

I'm not so sure Smash Bros needs DLC because its already going to be jam-packed with content like the previous games. I just don't want Sakurai to spend time too much time on this kind of thing when he could be working on a new project sooner.

I'm sure Sakurai would want to rebalance everything, add some new cool ideas he's had, drop some new levels, a new mode... and the DLC would end up becoming a full-fledged expansion for $20 (YES please) or saved material for the next game.

And not just DLC. It would be a stupid move to not add content for their games specially when their pipeline of games has the huge bottleneck of being understaffed, underexperienced techwise and they have nearly no external support for either of the platforms they own. Its such a low investment that can keep their products appealing while they get the grip on those shaders and their new headquartars are still under construction.

A resounding YES is my answer. One thing that I dislike about some games is when developers stop supporting it early.

Smash Bros is one game that I enjoy going to tournaments for (we won't have a conversation about your opinion of the FGC sidetracking this game!). A game that doesn't get support can easily fall off of the radar in that regard. I think that one of the reasons Brawl fell off is because of some dumb mechanics that could have been patched out. Things like tripping obviously, but also, other things in the game. It's very defensive based. The shield in brawl is completely over powered. There's no need to actually attack when you can just as easily wait for your opponent to attack, shield, and then counter. Balancing patches will go a long way in keeping the game alive for the non-casuals, and for those who don't care about competition won't really care too much about small updates to mechanics. Furthermore, Smashers are extremely passionate about the series. This is why things like Project M exist, as well as other modified versions of Brawl. If Nintendo refuses to support their own game, then the dedicated players will take it upon themselves to provide the support that Nintendo refuses to.

Now for other DLC such as Characters, I believe that Nintendo could set a wonderful example for other companies in that regard. Down the line, say about half a year or so after launch, they could begin with Character and Stage DLC. With New Super Luigi U, they've shown that they can do DLC properly. The added content is huge in that game, and also reasonably priced. If they do 1-3 reasonably priced character packs every once in a while, the game will have amazing legs both casually and competitively. Not to say that it wouldn't sell well without that. It will still be a great hit. The competitive scene though could be huge for Nintendo, though. With eSports quickly rising in popularity, I think it would be fantastic for Nintendo to support that side of gaming. It would shed a wonderful light on the company.

Last of all, I feel like they should do free aesthetic DLC. Extra costumes for characters, re-skins of stages, and maybe even extra music should be free to all. Nintendo has a chance to really knock this out of the park after release, and I hope they take it.

No. Not at all. I honestly prefer my games to stay the same. I don't want anything to change as I'm learning it. I'm still sort of a newb at Melee. And at the same time, Melee has yet to get old. Just let games be.

Cosmetic DLC would be ok I guess. But it's not something I'd be very interested in.

I would buy everything. Hopefully if there was DLC is would be something substantial. I'd happily pay for more characters and stages. I'd be less willing to part with my money for costumes and things, but it depends.

They should definitely do free balance patches that prevent any segmentation of the player base though. Make it so that people without the DLC can play with DLC owners. I'd also like older stages (and the stages from the other version) added for free to keep people playing.

I wouldn't mind. As long as the characters aren't broken/overpowered. If they learn from the outrageous mistakes Playstation Allstars made, I'd be all for it.

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo
I wouldn't mind DLC if its at a resonable price and done correctly. Meaning that whatever is being sold its not already on the disc but a true expansion, whether its characters, costumes, etc. I think if done correctly and with the right content, it would bring in a KILLING. People are gonna buy the Wii 2 for Smash U alone, if you sweeten that deal up even further with some good DLC whether its stages, characters, costumes or new gameplay modes, Smash could be more of a system seller than it already is.

And for those that don't like it cause its "not normal coming from Nintendo" or whatever, then don't buy it. Simple.

Of course? Who the hell wouldn't want on-going support for their game? What kind of Luddite doesn't want DLC?

This.

I think DLC gets a bad rep... because devs have given it a bad rep. Probably 90% of DLC is on disc, or retailer exclusive, or day one dlc. Lots of bullshit. Basically locking part of the finished game away behind a paywall. I get the feeling that many Nintendo fans believe this is how Nintendo would handle DLC with their games. This, of course, is the wrong kind of DLC, and no one wants this kind of DLC.

Nintendo is not Capcpom.

I don't believe Nintendo would pull a Cross Tekken with their DLC habits. If Smash Bros got DLC, I predict it would be similar to New Super Luigi U. Some time after the release of the initial game (probably a year or two), a "Super" version of Smash 4 is released either as $30 DLC for anyone who owns the game, or $60 for the stand alone version. Probably cheaper. It includes new characters, stages, music, balance changes, and more.

No one should be opposed to that, because it would be awesome. I don't know about you, but I don't like waiting 6 years between Smash Bros games. DLC gives Sakurai and team a way of keeping the game alive during the long wait for a new Smash Bros.

It also helps that Smash Bros might be the game that lends itself most to DLC out of any game ever made. Besides the obvious characters and stages, we could get new music, taunts, character entrances, new single player modes (additional break the target stages, additional event matches), new multiplayer modes, alternate costumes for characters... the list goes on.

I think Nintendo knows how to do DLC properly, and I look forward to them incorporating it into Smash Bros. sakurai pls ;_;

You do know buying DLC is optional, right? If you want to stick to your guns then that's fine, you don't have to participate in the DLC if it doesn't suit you.

Not with Nintendo. If they have left over stuff, they tend to use it in their next game. Super Mario 3D Land on 3DS had a bunch of ideas that the team didn't get to implement into Mario Galaxy, and the new 3D World is having ideas that they didn't have time to put into 3D Land.

Smash having DLC would be amazing. That way we don't have to wait 5+ years to see what other cool stuff the developers wanted to add. Also, the balancing can be fixes so we don't have another Metaknight fiasco.

What about a season pass for $20 bucks?

I'd rather not have a season pass. Sometimes there are games that I think I'll love, and I'll get the season pass. Then when it comes out I play it for a while, and never really get around to downloading all of the pass content due to lack of interest.

I think expansions ala Super Luigi U are the way to go character-wise.

Excellent post.

If it's worth it, I'll get it.
Who am I kidding? I'd buy ANYTHING Smash.

lol I'm the same way. I'll buy ANYTHING for Smash; I love that damn game.

Nintendo, take advantage of me pls.
One of the only few games I'll do that with.
