DF/JF: Battlefield 4 PS4 vs XB1 videos/screens (900p PS4, 720p XB1)

Mother of God what happened. JacketFrags wasn't lying when he said that PS4 multiplayer > XO singleplayer.

If the differences are partially due to bad drivers and the like from MS, shouldn't these differences go down once they get fixed? When I look at the sum of all the advantages the PS4 offers it seems much greater than the seemingly 50% power advantage that it offers.

I think the Xbox One footage is a lot better than the doom and gloom around here would suggest (single player). That said it suffers from significant aliasing issues and watching 30fps videos on compressed YT footage on my 720p phone probably isn't the best way to judge...

Wow. So uh, why does the Xbox One version look sharper?

Better lighting and AA on PS4 though.

They only look sharper in the DF capture which seems to apply a filter to the x1 version and captured ps4 upscaled and got x1 native. Look at the IGN video and videogamer video, no difference in textures

The video is shit. On it the One version indeed looks a bit better. Doesn't make any sense. DF fucked up good.

Still, I'll believe the guy who actually played the game and says the PS4 version looks better. Not that it matters for me. Wasn't going to buy the One anyway. Just happy to see how MS is failing. ;-)

This is the first of many videos. There was already an apology made.

If they continue to mess up like this, then sure, but pre-launch, all of this stuff is a mess of VERY VERY controlled situations with no real shot of second chances. Every so often one little setting is wrong. Cut 'em some slack for now.

It also doesn't help that artificially washed out colors and the collateral effects of that was exactly what happened in a lot of their PS3 comparisons as well.

On the pictures for Xbox One regarding clouds, they are there. The reason some of you cannot seem them is because of the color saturation. It is all over the place. Go back to the pictures, and look harder, they are there. The color saturation just sucks. lol

roughly as many pixels between the PC version and the PS4 version as there are between the PS4 and the XBone version. bear in mind the PC number is perfectly achievable with a sub-$200 GPU, and a lot of people are going to have to have a long hard think about their priorities.
Bullshit.

You're not going to get comparable performance at 1080p Ultra on a sub-$200 GPU. The framerate will be dipping far below 60 fps on such a card. You're massively underestimating the requirements.

Okay, if you really insist
I'm not paying a 100usd more to get the same game that I could have had on ps4. I'm actually paying a 100 bucks more, because I'm confident in kinect ( Yes, I said it). I believe people actually are underestimating the kinect and it's just matter of a few years before we actually get a ground breaking thing with it, but don't ask me what, I'm no dev.
I'm not paying, I'm investing, I believe I will get a better experience with the xbone and if that not the case, then I'll buy a ps4 later on and play gret exclusives on there too.

Why not get the one that has tangible benefits right now, and wait on the other to reach it's potential? Seems backwards to me.

Read the article or pretty much any page in the thread. It's been discussed to death. There's some kind of sharpening filter going on with the Xbone version to mask some of the blurriness of upscaling. It accentuates the aliasing though since it runs at a much lower resolution, hence the hideous jaggies everywhere.

There also doesn't seem to be any AO in the Xbox version which makes a lot of scenes look really flat.

Wow. So uh, why does the Xbox One version look sharper?

Because it has a sharpness filter cranked up to 11. You can do that with the PS4 too by going into your TV settings and turning up the sharpness.

Then there's some strange problem with DF's capture since the Xbox One doesn't have this level of sharpness in other captures.

And the PS4 is probably using FXAA.

I've known what it is since God of War 3 was in development, thank you. I'm not a fan. But the RGB reference is all the explanation anyone should need for apparent texture softness.

It's clearly not though. What form of AA do you think they're using on the PS4 version? Have you ever played around with FXAA on PC?

P.s God of War 3 used MLAA...

It's odd that people keep bringing up the 'casual gamers' and what they think.

I'm not buying the consoles and games for other people, I don't care what other people do and don't care about. I'm buying them for myself.

It's madness. The PC versions shits on the PS4 but then the difference between PS4 and Xbox is no big deal at all.

Why do you keep talking about Fallout 3 like anyone is supposed to care? You're living in the past man. Contemporize.

Because my point is that the visual difference shown in BF4, is no bigger of a difference then some of the visuals differences between the ps3 and 360.

and fallout 3 shows this, many other last gen games show this sought of difference, fallout 3 is just an example to get my point across.

Wait wtf. Looks like the Jackfrag video shows off better lighting on the X1 than what DF is showing? What the hell is happening?

So the difference sums up to:

Better AA on PS4
Sharper picture on the XB1.

Wow. All that drama for THIS? Jeez.

edge enhancement is a big one too....fair warning...turning off edge enhancement, and lowering sharpness is going to be an adjustment for you...for awhile youre going to think everything looks too soft because youre used to the sharpness....give your eyes time to adjust to it...youll like the results...

I dont think my tv (panasonic viera) has edge enhancement!

Go grab your remote controller, and play with it. You can make your 360/PS3 games have similar differences. Look at the color, look at the blackness in the Xbox version.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
Gametrailers said the PS4 looks almost identical to the PC version on max settings.

and runs butter smooth on 60 fps.

a 7950 is sub-$200 PU and people are claiming a steady 60FPS with a mix of high and ultra.

i very, very much doubt the console versions are running at ultra, either.

...and my point is that the differences, even less visible as they may seem, between BF4 represent a larger computational load than the differences you're pointing out in FO3.

If I had more time, it would be interesting to collect all the crazy things said by juniors in this thread. This thread might have the record for useless shit said with most people disregarding the discussion that is going on.

I'm just gonna quote this...

Not even close to the same.

  • PS4 renders 56% more total pixels.
  • Xbone renders at 720p (aka, same as the 360/PS3 versions)
  • PS4 has anti-aliasing
  • Xbone is missing motion blur in MP
  • PS4 has HBAO (ambient occlusion)
  • Even after all those advantages, PS4 runs at a higher framerate

Wow, and there I was thinking this new generation would be an end to poor image quality - dodgy upscale blur on PS4 and massive aliasing on XBone.

Sharper? Do you not see the jaggies in the Xbox pictures? Really?

Biggest takeaway?

The PS4 software upscaling sucks. But, the Xbox One hardware upscaler is awesome.

PS4 pushes ~50% more pixels but you sure don't see that huge gap onscreen.

Xbone has a few jaggies, but PS4 doesn't look as sharp...weirdly blurry in places where it shouldn't be.

Investing? People don't usually intentionally invest in depreciating assets, they buy them.

If by sharper you mean 50% less pixels and no AA, yea it looks sharper.

So let me get this straight:

DF used some kind of tv sharpner feature and that made the XB1 look more pixelated and darker than it really is?

So if they hadn't done that, the differences would be even less visible? Wow.

Better resolution.
Better lighting.
Better FPS stability.
Better AA (possibly at the expense of sharpness)

Unless you're blind, the PS4 version is better in basically every single way. Especially in multiplayer, its not even close.

The only way its close is if you're one of the people in this thread that love to crank up the saturation and sharpness on everything.

I'm seriously disappointed if all Xbox One games will have that horrible over-amplified contrast and sharpness filter applied to them. Please let it be just a BF4 thing. Other than that the differences were what I expected and I could see myself playing either one. With the over sharp saturated mess though... ouch

I must admit that the PS4 does look better.. It's not apparent right away, but it is if you look more closely.

Is there any chance the gap will be smaller in the future (thanks to better ESRAM tools etc..)?

I think all this talk of Joe Walmart not telling the difference is beside the point. By the time the Joe Walmart's of the world think about buying the console in any great numbers, way after launch, the marketshare and mindshare is decided.

There is no way you're telling me people won't balk about paying a premium for a noticeably AND anecdotally inferior version - word of mouth matters.

Thanks man.

Does anyone know if JPGs are able to express the full RBG range? ie, if I had a better monitor would I see what the screenshot looked like on a full range screen?

No. A better monitor would still reproduce the same JPG image because the RBG range is already limited. Your monitor can not reveal more information in the picture than is already there. The only way to see more is if a screenshot were taken from a full range feed. So none of the DF videos or pictures will show the full RGB range of the Xbox One (assuming the RBG range isn't somehow automatically limited by the console itself. I'm still unclear on that part).

Walk over to your Tv. Go to settings, go to sharpness, turn up to 100.

If you dont see differences in the images below, then I have no words to explain it to you.
