Xbox One practically unusable without day one update

Sorry if old.

According to one of Microsoft's Xbox team members, Xbox One owners will "need the Day One update" to get going on the upcoming console.

Speaking to Engadget in an interview published on Friday, Microsoft's senior director of product management Albert Penello said that Xbox One owners "will be able to do very little without taking the day one update." When pressed on what users could do with the Xbox One before the update is added to the console, Penello said "nothing."

We've known this for a while, you can't do anything past the "setup" process until you download the update.

There was a rumor going around that Gamestops are getting wifi in the next couple weeks to help people get the day one patches for the new consoles. Should help a bit.

Well both consoles need day one patches. But at least the PS4 can do offline gaming which is a plus.Wonder how the soldiers over seas or anyone without connections will handle this.

Same case with both next gen consoles . They left a majority of their features in the day 1 update

There's a difference between leaving features out and the console being unusable without the patch.

Should there be some kind of disclaimer on the box telling consumers that they need an internet connection to be able to use the thing? Do we know how big the update will be?

I assume the patch will be on game discs too, no?

This is how they've typically handled important system updates for users with no internet connection.

I wonder if stores will post notices about requiring an internet connection for your console to even be able to work eventually.

I don't know why but that exchange made me chuckle. "Nothing", lol. I think we already knew this. I hope they advertise it on the box for those few who would be purchasing a $500 console/media hub but don't have internet.

Not everyone has Internet access

yeah but ms has already said an internet connection is REQUIRED for the initial setup

ms has done a lot of stupid stuff, but this is kind of grasping at straws. what a non-issue. we've already known about it for months

Will the patch be made available to download on a normal PC and transferable via a USB pen? Think I would prefer to download it prior to getting my Xbox One, plug in the USB pen and update it instantly rather than having to fight the traffic that's going to be hitting the live servers come launch day....

EDIT - Just tweet Albert, Major and Phil asking this question.

Im assuming so. But they havent said anything about including it on a disk in the box or on any other title so far. Would be good if it was packed in but the boxes are already out in warehouses as well as some game titles already.

They couldn't fit 1GB patch on a Blu Ray disc? wtf?

By the time that patch is ready to be deployed, millions of consoles will be packaged and on their way to stores. Game discs are also certified long time ago, their content is fixed.

So its download from the web is the only choice.

Is it mentioned anywhere when you pre-order the console? Is retail staff going to make that clear to the customers? Any obvious, clear warnings on the box?

If not, it's going to be a clusterfuck.
