PS4 can play games without an update.
.... whilst downloading the Day 1 patch in the background.
PS4 can play games without an update.
Same case with both next gen consoles . They left a majority of their features in the day 1 update
I assume the patch will be on game discs too, no?
This is how they've typically handled important system updates for users with no internet connection.
They couldn't fit 1GB patch on a Blu Ray disc? wtf?

You can still play games on the PS4 without the patch.
Well PS4 owners can still play games which isn't the case with the XBone.
Besides that though, yeah most features will come in the day 1 update for both consoles.
Similar case.
At least the ps4 can still play games though, you know, being a gaming console and all.
Not needed on the PS4 for gaming. The day one update just enables a bunch of other launch features.
There's a difference between leaving features out and the console being unusable without the patch.
Should there be some kind of disclaimer on the box telling consumers that they need an internet connection to be able to use the thing? Do we know how big the update will be?
No ..not the same case at all. Xbox is a brick until you update and thats not the case with the ps4
For the people saying the PS4 is playable on day one, when will you choose to download the PS4 patch?
Next day?

They REALLY want you to sign in and have an account. Then you'll use the XBL trial and hopefully like the functionality. I suppose eventually they'll have other means of updating but they want you connected.

Is it mentioned anywhere when you pre-order the console? Is retail staff going to make that clear to the customers? Any obvious, clear warnings on the box?
If not, it's going to be a clusterfuck.

15-20 minutes according to Microsoft
sigh...
1.024 Mbps 03:15:18
1.544 Mbps 02:09:32
2.048 Mbps 01:37:39
10 Mbps 00:20:00
25.6 Mbps 00:07:48
34 Mbps 00:05:52
45 Mbps 00:04:26
51 Mbps 00:03:55
100 Mbps 00:02:00
Does it matter? There are already consoles out in the wild with people using them pre-patch.
This make some sense, maybe it's a security thing who knows.
That would be unwise. Which is why I don't see the difference basically.
I feel for xbone owners if the servers don't hold up.

And yet Penello still tries to hedge in answering the question.I thought everyone knew this.
Things like this should really be a nonissue in 2013. Most likely this stuff is done as a cost saving / manufacturing move so that they can get rolling on making the consoles before the firmware is 100% tweaked and ready to go, under the assumption that anyone buying a console will have some form of connection to update with.

If the second wave of shipments doesn't come working out of the box it'll be fucking retarded.Any idea how long it will be before the box (either one - PS4 or XBO) ships with these day 1 patches already installed as the default firmware? Could it happen for shipments that arrive before the end of the year?

Rumoured to be 1.3GB.
And we've known this since they announced the Day 1 update months ago.
The Xbox One is a brick until it's updated.
I don't think so. You can call and request a disc with it or install via a usb driveDid Sony ever state if the launch titles have the 1.50 update on the disk?

And why would anyone skip day-one updates to the launch games? This seems to be a really dumb distinction to make, as if it seriously matters to anyone buying a next-gen console on day-one. I mean, who wouldn't update when every internet-connected device you can buy today pretty much offers day-one firmware/OS updates?
There was a rumor going around that Gamestops are getting wifi in the next couple weeks to help people get the day one patches for the new consoles. Should help a bit.
