Xbox One practically unusable without day one update

For the people saying the PS4 is playable on day one, when will you choose to download the PS4 patch?

Next day?

I assume the patch will be on game discs too, no?

This is how they've typically handled important system updates for users with no internet connection.

They couldn't fit 1GB patch on a Blu Ray disc? wtf?

They REALLY want you to sign in and have an account. Then you'll use the XBL trial and hopefully like the functionality. I suppose eventually they'll have other means of updating but they want you connected.

No and yes, respectively.

I doubt they will be on launch game discs. Games have been gold for a while, they've still been working on the day one update since then.

Yeah, this has been known, again, since they reversed their DRM stance.
I thought people paying zero attention to news was limited to Killer Instinct threads. Come on, guys.

They were going in with the expectation of being online only

Patch isn't done before games are gold

Infrastructure would need to be built from scratch to accept updates from disc.

Not enough time to build and test this before manufacturing starts.

PS4 can play games without an update.

You can still play games on the PS4 without the patch.

Well PS4 owners can still play games which isn't the case with the XBone.

Besides that though, yeah most features will come in the day 1 update for both consoles.

Similar case.

At least the ps4 can still play games though, you know, being a gaming console and all.

Not needed on the PS4 for gaming. The day one update just enables a bunch of other launch features.

There's a difference between leaving features out and the console being unusable without the patch.

Should there be some kind of disclaimer on the box telling consumers that they need an internet connection to be able to use the thing? Do we know how big the update will be?

No ..not the same case at all. Xbox is a brick until you update and thats not the case with the ps4

I stand erected

Does it matter? There are already consoles out in the wild with people using them pre-patch.

Not to mention the patch is like a quarter of the size.

I don't know why people expect any different. Many launch day consoles were made several months ago and thus had an old build of the OS installed. The OS with the original online only rev1 DRM system. Do the people who have issues with this not want MS to update anything including the way the Bone works? Even without the policy changes I would want the software engineers to find and kill bugs and optimize the OS further in the ~ 6 months since they provided the rev1 OS build.

This make some sense, maybe it's a security thing who knows.

Is it mentioned anywhere when you pre-order the console? Is retail staff going to make that clear to the customers? Any obvious, clear warnings on the box?

If not, it's going to be a clusterfuck.

Doubt it.

Anyone without an internet connection will be in for a surprise or they will have to take it somewhere to update it.

PS4 can play games without an update.

And why would anyone skip day-one updates to the launch games? This seems to be a really dumb distinction to make, as if it seriously matters to anyone buying a next-gen console on day-one. I mean, who wouldn't update when every internet-connected device you can buy today pretty much offers day-one firmware/OS updates?

Isn't this common knowledge by now? When you get a phone, a game, an app, a PC, a laptop etc etc etc you have to update it to use it. It's always a pain but you can't say you're surprised when it happens.

15-20 minutes according to Microsoft

sigh...

Assuming the file size is somewhere around 1.5gb, here are the estimated download times per connection speed:

Times are in HH:MM:SS

Code:
1.024 Mbps 03:15:18
1.544 Mbps 02:09:32
2.048 Mbps 01:37:39
10 Mbps 00:20:00
25.6 Mbps 00:07:48
34 Mbps 00:05:52
45 Mbps 00:04:26
51 Mbps 00:03:55
100 Mbps 00:02:00

Lol, it's a money thing. They want you in that ecosystem. It's kind of the main point behind the console, if nobody connected to XBL they'd be fucked. Luckily for them I like having my consoles connected. I can imagine at the least some bad press could come out of this but it shouldn't be too bad.

Things like this should really be a nonissue in 2013. Most likely this stuff is done as a cost saving / manufacturing move so that they can get rolling on making the consoles before the firmware is 100% tweaked and ready to go, under the assumption that anyone buying a console will have some form of connection to update with.

Any idea how long it will be before the box (either one - PS4 or XBO) ships with these day 1 patches already installed as the default firmware? Could it happen for shipments that arrive before the end of the year?

I thought everyone knew this.
And yet Penello still tries to hedge in answering the question.

well thats something... surely you can dl the update right now and install it via usb drive or something?

Gonna be a lot of angry gaffers day 1 otherwise.

I said this in another thread but it would be better in this thread.

What happens if you manage to get ur hands on the Xbox One a few days early and try to connect to XBL? Think Msoft will punish you for that?

I would think it's more that they are rushing to finish the OS on time... we've certainly had enough rumours pointing in that direction.

If the second wave of shipments doesn't come working out of the box it'll be fucking retarded.

Day one, it's only 300Mb.

But if someone doesn't have internet they can play single player with no problem on day one.

No way!! You mean I will have to wait 2 minutes to play my xbone? Nooooooo... Is this news? I have known this for months, MS has been saying this for months... Why is this an issue?

They couldn't fit 1GB patch on a Blu Ray disc? wtf?

Those consoles are already packaged. They will be working on that patch until the 21st.

Can you download the patch ahead of time? I know the PS4 is going to do it (the patch they already released was not the real one I guess).

It would really be useful if you could download the patch a few days before launch, save to a USB, then install it. Thus saving tons of time trying to download it with the millions of other people.

That would be unwise. Which is why I don't see the difference basically.

PS4: (I think) You can download it to USB on a PC whilst playing games
You can download it after an initial 'this is awesome and I've just put my name in' first play session with Killzone
(I think) you can download whilst playing a game in the background

Xbox One: You can do nothing

PS4 = options
Xbox One = zero options

Should this influence your decision to buy day one? Probably not. But to suggest the first experience for customers on day one will be the same is flatly wrong.

Put it this way, even if PSN's download speeds are as slow ass as people claim the PS3 version of PSN is, or the servers crap up constantly because everyone is trying to connect at the same time, I can still have the update running in the background while playing games on the PS4 while I am at the whim of how smooth or rough the download would go on XBL before I can even play any game.

There was a rumor going around that Gamestops are getting wifi in the next couple weeks to help people get the day one patches for the new consoles. Should help a bit.

Juh? So people are to unbox their console in the store, and set it up there? lol wut? Am I interpretting this wrong?
