Xbox One practically unusable without day one update

Wait people complained and they caved in and switch to not always online, now people are mad about a patch we've known about for months? Good god what do some of you want, hell even both systems have patches.

Would be nice to be able to download this patch to a thumbdrive before launch so you wouldn't have to wait to download it while the servers are getting hammered.

This is stupid. Don't know the engineering challenges involved, but this seems like a bad way to ship a product.

From all the rumors they are working on this stuff up until the very last minute. I'm sure Sony is as well. The difference is that at least the PS4 works as a gaming console without a day 1 patch from what we know.

If you're buying an Xbox One, you know this and accept this.

Everyone else is buying a PS4.

Really? You think all those parents buying their kids Xbones for christmas know this? Get real people, not playing games out of the box is a big deal, and it will cause problems especially among the casual market and in places with crappy internet speeds. There will be users who will have to wait hours to download the update and that's a fact.

I also learn that you can't lend games to your friends and that you need to be connected to the internet.

It's gunna be a shit storm.

If anyone wants an XB1 and hasn't pre ordered I suggest waiting outside retailers about 6-7PM when the parents come back in a huff returning XB1's.

That's why stores need to alert customers before they buy it.I wonder if the box even says anything about it (if it doesn't it could be an issue).

Agree, most will have no clue, casuals dont even hook up to internet if they have.

Is it also known that you can do absolutely nothing without day one update?

it's right there

and also... the "require" in the headline.

it's super old news.

There was always going to be a day one update on the console, and that’s frankly just a difference in manufacturing schedules versus software schedules,” Whitten told IGN. “We just wanted to be clear that that hasn’t changed, that you have to go online to get the software update for day one, then you wouldn’t have to be connected after that.”

I guess I don't know what to say except that some people are ignoring that the modern CE device and internet-connected game is like this across the board, maybe even worse than this sounds like. Guess we'll see what kind of non-story this turns out to be at launch.

It's all relative really, it only takes one person with a shit connection and a twitter/facebook account to make some noise.

If it doesn't MS will be getting some very big fines in the EU, so I'm sure it will.

This is pretty fucking terrible guys, just on principle.

Really? It's pretty much the norm these days. It sucks and is annoying, but I'm so used to shit launches that I don't see the point in getting outraged. I just wait for things to cool down first.

Mandatory internet connection?
Granted many of us have an internet connection but surely they must provide another way to update the console either with a USB stick or something? If you don't have an internet connection then you literally have a box? Somehow I can't see how this is allowed?

Not a big deal. No one will care come day 2

There is areason MS had to do a 180 on the online stuff. People hate it.

They haven't found a solution to scrap it without a day one patch. That's just how it is. If you don't have Internet don't buy an Xbox, at least not at launch. If MS could change it they would.

And yet they bought a 499$ console.

Yeah, fuck them for wanting to play single player games, right?

Ultimately, this isn't that big of a deal but it's pretty shameful that people are trying to equate this to what Sony is doing or downplay it as if it's a complete non-issue.

For real folks? Seriously who has no internet connection and yet buys a €499 console at launch. Not many people, if any at all, who buy such an expensive piece of hardware without having internet access.

this, nothing else to add

I bet there will be a few angry parents returning the system because they don't want to deal with that.

Can it at least play games without the update? Also, couldn't they put the update on one of the games? Nintendo did this with the Wii, where certain games will have the latest firmware on the disk to be installed to the console.

This is so ridiculous.

That disc would still be old because updates are continually happening. You mean you want GS to download and burn discs for each customer on release date?

No. Microsoft should burn to disc the necessary patch in order for the console to function and ship them out to retailers. Anything afterward is the responsibility of the owner.

I know this sucks but we've also known about this for ages. It was the first thing I asked people months ago after they'd done their 180, but it didn't seem to bother the people I talked to...
MS should really include a disc with the update on it.

It is a complete non issue. I couldn't use my cell phone until it was set up...

Required implies that. PS4 can kinda play games but that is about it (SP no MP). Everything else is in the 1.5 firmware. No Blu Ray, no DVD.

Both consoles are pretty much a shell or useless without the Day One patches. Its the new normal. Everyone should be used to it by this point. Are you really expecting them to have the OS finalized when the consoles were getting manufactured?

Does anyone else think that this could potentially backfire on MS? Not "the console will bomb" backfire obviously, but I bet there will be a few angry parents returning the system because they don't want to deal with that.

The OS might not be ready by the time discs have to be stamped, so I wouldn't expect it necessarily. They might be working on this up till the day before it goes live.

The real question is, will the GAF servers survive the launch period so people can go crazy here while waiting for their consoles to update?
