No we didn't.

No we didn't.
Except for this mythical person that's really into technology and wants to buy an X1 on launch
There must be something out there to download currently, though. I have a friend who has access to an Xbox one through his job, he's been playing Killer Instinct on it.
This is stupid. Don't know the engineering challenges involved, but this seems like a bad way to ship a product.
Couldn't they just give out a disk whenever someone buys the console? They don't have to be in the fucking box.
If you're buying an Xbox One, you know this and accept this.
Everyone else is buying a PS4.
Two of the consoles didn't and are not leaving the ability to play games at all behind a patch.Same case with both next gen consoles . They left a majority of their features in the day 1 update
Did we know the console would be a paperweight before updating?
Really? You think all those parents buying their kids Xbones for christmas know this? Get real people, not playing games out of the box is a big deal, and it will cause problems especially among the casual market and in places with crappy internet speeds. There will be users who will have to wait hours to download the update and that's a fact.
And Wii U was shit at launch without the day 1 patch and PS4 will be shit at launch without the day 1 patch
Let's not make a big fuss here people

Is it also known that you can do absolutely nothing without day one update?
There was always going to be a day one update on the console, and that’s frankly just a difference in manufacturing schedules versus software schedules,” Whitten told IGN. “We just wanted to be clear that that hasn’t changed, that you have to go online to get the software update for day one, then you wouldn’t have to be connected after that.”
I guess I don't know what to say except that some people are ignoring that the modern CE device and internet-connected game is like this across the board, maybe even worse than this sounds like. Guess we'll see what kind of non-story this turns out to be at launch.
That's why stores need to alert customers before they buy it.I wonder if the box even says anything about it (if it doesn't it could be an issue).
Documentation probably does but the box? I don't think so.That's why stores need to alert customers before they buy it.I wonder if the box even says anything about it (if it doesn't it could be an issue).
So could the Wii U, but it couldn't do much else.PS4 can play games without an update.
This is pretty fucking terrible guys, just on principle.
Granted many of us have an internet connection but surely they must provide another way to update the console either with a USB stick or something? If you don't have an internet connection then you literally have a box? Somehow I can't see how this is allowed?Mandatory internet connection?

And yet they bought a 499$ console.

For real folks? Seriously who has no internet connection and yet buys a 499 console at launch. No many people, if any at all, who buy such an expensive piece of hardware without having internet access.
who cares? the update is there day one, so no one has to use it in its "unusable" state
I see the mountain construction crew is here working on the molehill.
I thought everyone knew this.
There is areason MS had to do a 180 on the online stuff. People hate it.
They haven't found a solution to scrap it without a day one patch. That's just how it is. If you don't have Internet don't buy an Xbox, at least not at launch. If MS could change it they would.
That disc would still be old because updates are continually happening. You mean you want GS to download and burn discs for each customer on release date?
Mandatory internet connection.Mandatory internet connection?

Yeah, fuck them for wanting to play single player games, right?
Ultimately, this isn't that big of a deal but it's pretty shameful that people are trying to equate this to what Sony is doing or downplay it as if it's a complete non-issue.
Is it also known that you can do absolutely nothing without day one update?
Does anyone else think that this could potentially backfire on MS? Not "the console will bomb" backfire obviously, but I bet there will be a few angry parents returning the system because they don't want to deal with that.
Can it at least play games without the update? Also, couldn't they put the update on one of the games? Nintendo did this with the Wii, where certain games will have the latest firmware on the disk to be installed to the console.
This is so ridiculous.
