Xbox One practically unusable without day one update

Not to bang a drum for MS, especially since this amounts to shipping a product which doesn't work at all - generally phones will allow you to do some stuff prior to full initialisation - but remember the following:

MS does 'patch Tuesday' once a week. This is where the send out a patch for new 'features' (security hole plugs generally) to all internet connected Windows. They are often quite large.

There are an estimated 500 million XP users out there, so even if 1% of them download said patch at once that's 5 million people.

At best XBone is looking at 1/5th of that total.

So I don't think server access is going to be an issue.

Buying a console that doesn't work, with a patch that may or may not brick consoles (my take on Buttock's 'Too big to speak off, wait until launch' comment) - that's the issue.

Double standards, wow.

The PS4 can't do much out of the box either without an update. But far fewer people were complaining about that in that respective thread. The PS4 can't even play a bluray without the update!!!

And people saying, yes but the PS4 can play games out of the box. Well so you're telling me that you won't be updating your PS4 immediately? You'll play all the games first? Sure, if the games you're playing don't require an update before playing!

Mountain out of a molehill indeed

I can play a game while I install the update.

I think the fact that the XBone is a total brick without the day one update is new.

I'm a bit baffled that they could not even release it with a simple ELF loader. I mean, yes, the 180 fucked them up good, and the rumours about getting caught flat-footedly by Sony might be true, but not including even the most basic functionality? That's harsh, man. I pity the retail and customer support drones that will have to brave this shitstorm. Poor fuckers.

I can install it while playing a game which is the reason I bought a game console.

Versus

I cant do anything until I download and install this unkown sized update, which may or may not be long depending on my internet.

I can see which one is easier.

Your splitting hairs... when I specifically said "lets not split hairs".

False equivalency.

Besides, retailers will set up your phone for you. This would only be the same situation if retailers will set up your Xbox for you at the store.

I'm not saying this is as big a deal as some people are making it out to be. I'm saying that it's pretty shitty of people to downplay it. The day one patches don't affect me but I can see how it will suck for some people.

You are right they are different,. I actually missed some calls while it was being set up. There was actually an issue.

what games require an update before playing them?

Basically anything that goes online. I don't foresee a whole lot of offline, single-player campaign people making up the majority of buyers at launch. I mean, the biggest titles this year for next-gen will be the ones everyone knows, like CoD/BF4/Madden/NBA games/FIFA. Even the exclusive launch titles are pretty focused on online play and functionality. What about using all of those hyped up social features, like video sharing?

I love all the defending of MS's fuckups by saying the PS4 has a day 1 as well.

Here is the point; The PS4 (as far as we know) functions as a game console without that day 1 patch. Even more importantly it can download the update in the background while your using it to actually play a game.

MS should send stacks of "Day 1 Update" DVDs to stores so they can hand them to customers when they buy XB1.

EDIT:
didn't realize I was beaten:

Does anyone in here really think that it would be economically feasible for a company to ship a million discs overnight to thousands of locations?

Take a look at the prices of overnighting a letter. $25 - $50 at a minimum. MS and Sony are shipping their products to the distribution centers so their retail partners take care of the logistics.

Sometimes I doubt whether people understand supply chains.

Overnight? They have weeks.

Been connected to this futuristic internet thing for over a decade now. Day one patch does not frighten me as much as it does the people who pretend not to have a connection, yet are still able to post on gaf with reckless abandonment.

A day one required patch just to enable the one thing these consoles have *always* been able to do straight out of the box, is a major line crossed. With respect for the growing complexity of consoles and the increasing impact on OS services, there still needs to be a baseline functionality that should be able to work without a friggin' network connection, from day 1. I don't think that's too much to ask, given how they've managed to do that just fine for 8 generations or so.

So day one melt downs from casuals who don't know anything about Xbox and have no internet are still possible? Yessssssss. I was still sad they did the 180s because it would have been such a hilarious launch of wtf why is this 500 dollar console not working.

Why would you want to play multiplayer if you don't have internet?

I gave two examples of why almost all would want the day one patch.

But this is just another bash Xbox One thread by posting shit that's been known for 5 months, so I'll see myself out.

OMG, the humanity!! You can't do anything, and it may or may not take a long time before you can! Preorder canceled! That indeterminate amount of time where I can't do anything is a deal breaker!

We've known this for a while, you can't do anything past the "setup" process until you download the update.

Yeah, this has been known. No more mandatory internet connection, but a mandatory internet connection is required for setup. I still bet there will be a lot of folks who are very surprised when they bring it home. (Maybe not if they're early adopters.)

how economically feasible is it to have 1 million people downloading 1gb+ off your servers at the same time?

How about they let stores download the update and burn their own copies? Each store would only need a couple dozen copies.

I can't foresee a single thing that could go wrong with having every user downloading the same thing all at once.

That is disturbing.

The MS guy is correct - the more Kinect2 hears your voice the better it will get at recognising your commands.

This is a pretty common thing with voice-driven stuff - most talk-to-type software takes a while before it can accurately parse some words (especially if the speaker has an accent).

What I don't get is this: Why not use a box that's already been trained with the voice of the bod doing the presentation? Would be able to avoid this kind of thing completely.

It's almost mind-blowing that MS can even be allowed to ship a product that does not actually work out of the box, even as a traditional game console. I'm sure its been mentioned but it's crazy they couldn't at least have it ship with an OS that can at least play a game, its most basic purpose.

I also am disappointed that Sony can't get their shit together either, but again, at least when I unbox the PS4 and hook it up, I can play a game.
