Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Sesslers review (3/5) seemed fair.

Damn I shouldnt've opened the plastic wrap on my copy. I was worried about this game. The no autoaim on a console is strange too, if it controls like a pc game with a contoller that'll be bad.

I don't and the comparison posted doesn't really jive with the bias people are saying they have.

Gies doesnt write ALL of the reviews...for instance...he gave KZ the 5 (below the avg score)..while one of their other writers gave Knack a 6(above the avg score)

Never played a Killzone game before.

I expected Shadow Fall to be a standard shooter with mindblowing visuals on consoles. Turns out the game is just that. And games like that shouldn't get 9/10 scores. Especially if it belongs to a franchise that never received that high scores before.

Got the game today, and I'm still very much looking forward to play it.

but it did. KZ2 has a metacritic of 91

Wow @ these review threads. The GAF dichotomy of palavering on, incessantly, about the lack of integrity in games journalism but still needing quaintly quantified opinion pieces to tell them what to buy will never cease to astound me.

Next gen looks to amplify this silliness too.

Wait so KZ isn't even better than a bunch of horrible minigames? Might have to toss it on craigslist. I know you wouldn't lie when it comes to Nintendo :)
You don't think there's a chance NintendoLand fairs better against other games in its genre compared to Killzone Shadowfall vs other shooters?

I have not played either, but I don't think it's fair to compare scores this way.

Edit: Son of a bitch, I'm actually defending Polygon. What a crappy way to start my day.

Watched Sessler's review, definitely sending this back. He thought the multiplayer was competent but not great, and it seems the map design was bland. I'd rather play battlefield at this point.

Or maybe the first party games were just better on the X360 and he preferred them? I know it's astonishing that this could be possible but have you considered that?

These threads are so funny. Polygon bias, so much hate.

With gies, come on son just look at his past on twitter and on here.

These two paragraphs are actually fascinating to me as the fact that the game does not point these out to the player is something I view as a positive thing. Games have become far too obsessed with spelling out everything in the name of "user friendliness". These types of "rough edges", if you will, are one of the things I love most about shooters from the 90s.

I'd love to see Gies sit down and try to play through something like the original Shadow Warrior, for instance. I suspect he'd be unable to finish the very first stage in the "registered" game.

Picking up fuel rods from somewhere in the ship and using them to open a door somewhere else is basically keycard gameplay and I like that.

Killzone does seem a bit rough around the edges but I really like what they're doing with it and I hope they get to take another crack at this formula.

I do kinda see his point. If there is no indication that the fuel rods are required at all then how are you meant to have any idea what to do with them. The thing about the keycard style system was that it was purposefully designed to be pretty obvious what the aim was. The game didn't explicitly tell you however it made it quite clear that you had to find a keycard of a certain colour (in Doom for example). Although this game may do the same thing and Gies is just talking rubbish.

Also, if it's just plain impossible to complete a certain firefight without using a set piece weapon placement then that's just bad game design. However again, Gies may just suck at the game.

What does this have to do with Killzone?

people are just pointing out that his reviews tend to be wildly out of sync with the rest of community. I understand "opionions" and what not, but if a reviewer is consistently out of touch with the rest of the community that kind of makes it hard to believe anything they say.

I'm just saying people are claiming they have hard evidence of them having an agenda when they don't.

On the topic of COD I believe until now COD was able to get away with it because lets face it they have the perfect formula for a fun MP game. People show how fun it is with their wallets. Like you I buy every COD as well. Ghosts is really the first one since 4 that I'm feeling its getting a bit stale, but doesn't stop me from spending hours on the game with 3 friends laughing and raging at the same time over MP. I think for that reason COD doesn't need to change its forumla. Its the Madden of FPS now.

This is true, and why I buy it every year. But every year it's more of the same, just more call of duty with the same recycled ideas and perks etc...just on different maps. The Killzone games are different but just as fun, to me, as call of duty. And at least it seems based on what I have seen and read of the game they tried to take a different approach to the MP so I just don't see how it's a bunch of recycled ideas unless they were specifically targeting the SP campaign, which let's face it most SP campaigns of any FPS ever are the same shit. You kill stuff and move to the next area, it's not that hard.

It's all good, at least with Sessler, even though it sucks he gave it a lower score, at least articulates what he disliked about the game in an understandable manner unlike Geis.

Regardless, it's going in my PS4 day 1. Can't fucking wait.

Pretty close to what many predicted. It will fall short of my 8.8 however. It will probably settle around the low 80's.

Ok the Nth person on their high horse.

Stay out of review threads if you don't like it.

Wait, what? They're only allowed to have the same opinions as everyone else? I'd greatly prefer reviews of someone "out of sync with the community" than another review saying the same exact thing as the other 100 reviews out there.

Loving the footage from the Gamespot review, looks so smooth.
But overall the game looks not much better than Crysis 2-3.

Actually not surprised by these reviews. It's a bummer but Killzone it seems has yet again failed to carve it's niche.

At least it's damn gorgeous.

Kinda glad I reverted my pre-order for a PS4 on Amazon after Watch Dogs got delayed and my bundle got changed. I'm pretty content with PC gaming as it is.. Maybe down the road after some very solid exclusives come out i'll look at getting one again.

And yet Gies gave Halo 4 a 9.5/10.

Dude, just tattoo "I <3 MS" on your forehead already.
Really? He gave Halo 4 a 9.5 huh?

Having just replayed the game last week I'm genuinely surprised to see that. It's a solid game but it really lacks something next to Bungie's titles (especially Halo Reach). The campaign felt far more narrow in scope and less satisfying overall. Certainly not something I'd rate at 9.5.

While I'm still really excited to eventually play this, I still can't help but think about how weak the PS4 launch line up really is. At least in terms of what interests me. I'm feeling good about my decision to wait.

Polygon gave the Last of Us a 7.5? That's just embarrassing for them.

I think the fact that it was more for the fact that the game didn't make you feel like a hero was the saddest part of that review. The game clearly never was that sort of title and I have no idea why the reviewer expected that.

So its a launch game. It looks great, plays great, slightly uninspired parts, great multiplayer.

To me that sounds great honestly, can't wait for this and Resogun!

Fucking Polygon. I was once really excited by their design and especially their logo (shallow, I know, but it is what I do). But then I started to get to know some of the writers and what they think, what they like, and how they act online. I wish I never knew about them and that Polygon could just exist as a well-branded site in the back of my head.

Regarding the review, there is literally two small paragraphs about the multiplayer, which is the only feature of this game most people probably care about, and with so little detail they may as well not even be there.

Cannot say anything contrary to the rest of the review (since I have not played it) other than the art direction (which we can see clearly from many different sources) making enemies hard to see:

Some of this is due to questionable art design, as enemies are often incredibly difficult to make out against environments

I mean, seriously, that is not something that makes the art direction “questionable.” If enemy Nazi soldiers in a WWII game were wearing camo specific to a level’s environment in a high fidelity game like Killzone Shadow Fall, would that be “questionable”? Get real. So not only should the Helghast soldiers have glowing orange goggles, but they should also have Daft Punk-esque LED Tron highlights throughout their outfits, I suppose.

It really doesn't seem to be anything like the campaigns in the previous games, however.

Is it? I've only read the Kotaku review, which suggested that was mostly the case. I'll check out the others and attempt to read through this thread (better grab a few Excedrin...).

no, that's not what i'm saying at all. It's just that when they're consistently an outlier, it doesn't make sense to include them in the broader discussion. Also, in practice including them adds nothing to the conversation.

I translated the conclusion for op

There's no doubt about it, Killzone : Shadow Fall is the most appealing title on PS4's launch lineup : not only it's a technical success, but it also has a great level design and a clever scenario. If the solo is blazing, the multiplayer is a bit more classic but remains very well crafted. Well, Guerilla sets the bar really high for the PS4 launch and we hope we'll have many other titles of this caliber on Sony's console soon.

Sessler's review was pretty positive. Actually got me a bit more interested in the game.

Shame this game doesn't inspire confidence or enthusiasm. Weird to see people so down on an FPS campaign since most of them are junk. Last one I had a good time with was COD 4

I'm just wondering how many people complaining about Gies have played the game.

Ok....can we stop saying this. Of course we need to play the game to form our own opinion, but when pretty much every score is around a 7.0 or higher, then one comes in at a 5.0, that is a strange outlier. Which in and of itself is totally fine, a certain reviewer may not like the game.

But for Polygon, this has become an undeniable pattern when it comes to Sony exclusives. I continue to love their website's presentation and go there whenever they have one of their well-written features, but their reviews are suspect. (9.5 for Sim City anyone?)

This is nothing really new, most recent consoles had shit line ups at launch. The only 360 game I can vividly remember, and would still play, is Condemned. Most launches suck, and Xone is looking just as mediocre. I think Ryse will be rated like Knack if not worse, DR 3 will be a fun middle of the road game, and Forza could be swing with the reviewers taste in racers.
