Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Why is everyone so fixated on the Polygon review? It's not like it's the lone dissenter out of a bunch of really good reviews. As a whole they range from middling to above average at best.

- Polygon launched with $750k in sponsorship from MS (Press Reset)
- Review has no mention of remote play, and certain gameplay features like OWL
- Multiplayer impressions based on gameplay at a hotel review event
- The reviewer openly said on Twitter he was hoping Sony would announce anything but a new Killzone back during the unveil

Off the top of my head..

I've never really agreed with Gies' reviews, but it seems pointless to attack him so heavily.

Polygon is an easy target due to their affiliation with Microsoft and Gies' questionable credibility after various internet fiasco's. The game can't actually be a 5/10 because they're being bribed, Gies hates the series and/or is unreliable, etc.

When this game first was debut at the reveal I was watching a lot of the coverage from the various sites and the general sentiment from the gaming media was "not another killzone" /rollseyes so a lot of these reviews even down to the review text are exactly what I expected. Reviewers just dont like this series at all.

Why would he/she need to do play the game to form an opinion on it? I'm sure he/she has consumed every bit of media that has been uploaded to the internet, and if that isn't enough information to form a well informed opinion then I don't know what is.

lol are you serious? Reading all about a game is the same as playing it?

It really isn't anything special. At all. Wait... they usually look pretty good.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Can you screenshot it? Can't see it on my mobile.

I'm sure Arthur "I make up my mind about games before a second of footage is shown" Gies gave it a fair shake though.

Welp. Looks like ill be flipping my ps4 preorder now. There is literally nothing to play until next year for me. Contrast and resogun can wait.

No biggie. Ill use the extra funds to subsidize sm3dw, Zelda lbw and ace attourney 5.

I dunno, I've enjoyed them a lot more than some of the more popular series (Call of Duty for instance).

The Crysis series gets a lot of shit too but it's one of my favorite series of the past generation.

Haha, what? You can't be serious.

How many times are some of you going to say journalists and reviews are terrible and blow up at another review?

After the Uncharted 3 love in, after the Tomb Raider love in, after the GTAV love in, etc. etc., and after some of my most beloved games like The Wonderful 101 & Metal Gear Rising sit at or near the "80" mark, which is pretty much "3/5" in reviewer speak, I put NO stock into what the critics say. The Last of Us is probably the last game I truly agree with the majority critical opinion on. You guys are honestly better served waiting for the more level headed Killzone fans on GAF to give their take on the game, and EVEN THEN I'd still say you need to try the game for yourself.

You won't get good in depth mechanical reviews from 95% of these critics. You won't get real user feedback of multiplayer from 100% of these critics. Just take a step back and breathe. We're supposed to be in a post-awakened state in regards to game critics. Why are some of you buying into the Matrix again? Relax, brehs.
Yep.

Obviously a lot of people disagree with you. You keep coming in here and bashing the series. I agree with you that the KZ2 art director is greatly missed but that's not what made KZ2 a good game, it just made it a better one.

Looking like I'll be returning that copy of Killzone to Amazon. Guess Battlefield 4 will be my go-to for FPS gaming this year, assuming I don't decide to sell my PS4 now and buy it again once MLB hits. Very disappointing.

This was the one game I was hoping would review overwhelmingly great.

Never understood the Crysis hate. Crysis 2 may be one of my all time favourite shooters, and Crysis 3 was a damn fine experience.

Polygon's reason for being appears to be to throw a grenade in the mix for certain games, distorting perceptions, and influencing the narrative.

Time and again they stand alone (which is not always necessarily a bad thing), but in their case, you just stand there, with a bemused at what their agenda is.

As for those who would let such outlying reviews influence them, it says more about them, than the game.

Killzone being a solid 7-8 game is no great shame. The 9.5 score is just as much an outlier.

Visually looks amazing though. Do we have any gifs of reloading animations, yet?

Shan can we expect edge review? I don't really take reviews to hurt, but I do find complaints given by edge and Eurogamer to be more valid.

Seems everyone is just focusing/venting at one publication/person.

I see a number of publications are giving average scores and echoing some similar thoughts.

Metacritic is hovering in the low 70's right now.

Seems like mixed reviews, some complaining about it devolving into linearity towards the end and the usual complaints about the campaign. GG's strong suit has never been the narrative of these games, so it's hardly surprising.
Although I wonder how much hands on time they had with the multiplayer
lolygon keeping the status quo getting those clicks, their Ryse/Dead Rising 3 review threads should be awesome

Game still looks interesting and different from a pacing standpoint. Sessler's review is insightful. He painted the pacing to be like Half-Life 2 with its traversal aspect. His words made the game sound better than a 3/5 but I'm sure he has a reason to rate it there. I guess the biggest reason is that it isn't "new" enough for the FPS genre. Lets see if he contradicts himself when he reviews BF4 and CoD:Ghosts.

I don't think you need to be a fan, you just need to go in with an open mind. Unfortunately Arthur's mind was preoccupied dreaming of an office space next to Larry.

Average scores seem to be 7-8. Polygon's 5 is an obvious outlier.

Ya'll are hating on Gies, but man this GB quicklook isn't doing this game any favors. They all seem super down on it.

Blech. Wish it were better, but it'll be a nice graphics showcase for my quattro.

I've always enjoyed most of the KZ games and never understood the review scores against them, when the exact same stuff gets glowing reviews elsewhere like COD and BF games. They love to spew the word generic, then praise the next modern military shooter for it's cinematic "visceral" action.

Jeff Gerstmann posted this on his tumblr.

Jeff Killzone Shadow Fall looks like one of the most boring games of the year.

I’m still working my way through the campaign and need to see some proper online multiplayer, but I’m definitely not loving it so far.

My problem is that he reviewed it after saying he never liked the series. He had already made up his mind, and shouldn't have reviewed it. It is a question more of ethics in the end.

I am going to enjoy the game anyways as I have always liked Killzone,

Off the top of my head..
Point #2 - neither did many reviews
Point #3 - as are most all of them

As for him not being a fan of Killzone, its kind of hard to ignore that when you review a game. Again - the idea of subjectivity cant be taken out. People need to stop focusing on one single review and look at them as a whole and start reading what they're saying. Make your decision(if you haven't already) based on that, not on just one. Its stupid to get upset because one person doesn't feel the same as you. No game ever has had absolute, universal praise.

Well, I won't be playing this or any other new FPS, but according to metacritic COD:G is better than this. Can it really be? I can't think of a more tired game than COD.

That said, I always thought that Killzone was such a horrible name and just put you in the worst mindset when coming at this game. But, I did enjoy KZ2 quite a bit.

Reviews of the campaign are tempering expectations but for my money I'd rather a KZ campaign than a BF or COD one any day.

That is unless Guerilla has managed to fully transform into one of those other games from a single player perspective. Dramatically reduced kill times and shallow or simplistic AI would certainly be some early signs.

From the GB quicklook, this game looks pretty boring. Just a standard shooter campaign, hopefully the multiplayer is good. :(

Yep, that was the final nail in the coffin for me. The MP while decent does not look as good as Battlefield, so I changed my pre-order to that. I am especially disappointed that the promised openness did not work out as Eurogamer mentions.

Ghosts reviewed modestly, and like a poster above said, no shooter is doing what Battlefield is doing as far as scope of battle is concerned.
