Wait, what? You must be awful at Mario games then.

Super Luigi U was definitely challenging but everything else was a piece of cake. I certainly wouldn't put it up there as one of the more challenging series.

While the base game of NSMB: U wasn't very difficult, getting all the star coins and then getting all gold medals in the challenges was a greater challenge than most games out there.

I wish there was a challenge mode in 3D World :(
 
You seem to be in defensive mode this week. Will you be the same way next week if the reviews for the X1 exclusives aren't universally praised?
I seem to be in defensive, "mode", huh? Maybe I need to look at my own post history.

And for the record, I won't go near any Xbone review threads because I barely care about reviews and certainly don't care about reviews on a system I won't own for a long time - if ever.

I've been watching the massacre from the sin bin (banned), and wow. I have to say, I'm pretty disappointed. I vouched for this game to surprise people and it went the opposite direction.
 
After watching the Giant Bomb quick look I think I'm still going to get this. The combat encounters look like they require a little bit of strategy. The environments look simple yet seem to have some wonderful textures and high poly counts. Plus 10 hours for a launch platformer sounds great to me.

strategy does not equate to patience

I would like to watch a stream of you playing NSMB U then, because that game is not a piece of cake, unless you compare it to Cave shooters or something.

Watched Giant Bomb quicklook and I'm actually pretty excited for the game again, lol

The complaints seemed to be "This doesn't look next gen", "The jumps are high", "it might be TOO exacting", "checkpoints aren't great", and "I don't have a bunch of abilities". From what I've seen I love the visuals, and the fact that it was announced as a throw-back to PS1 titles means having elements of most of the things that they're calling out as negatives. You can die easily, and dying might mean replaying long-ish sessions, and you had a limited move set.I read somewhere that it was even pointed out that the checkpoints were deliberate, and that compared to Crash games, they made them much more convenient and less punishing. I thought calling out the visuals as often as they did was kind of crazy because while it's not a huge graphical showpiece, it looked gorgeous, and this isn't exactly a big project.

The GB guys don't seem to be shitting on the game, more just indifference because it's not their taste. But the more I see of that game (which like a couple hours of it now), I'm definitely going to pick it up (I mean, I already was, but then saw reviews, but I'm back on board again!).

What I am wary of is the length of the game, because 10-ish hours seems long for a game like this, so I can see why reviewers would complain about simple mechanics if that's all they utilized throughout the whole game. Still, the thing that keeps my interest going is less about Knack the character, and more the huge number of unique enemy types I've seen.

After playing Killzone for around two hours last night and Knack for around two hours this morning, I almost feel like the reviews were somehow reversed. Personally, I am enjoying Knack far more than Killzone (though Killzone is beyond gorgeous in the graphics department).

Some of the checkpoints do get a bit annoying, but so far it is a really fun game with a fair bit of challenge. (I have not tried it on easy or in co-op yet)

Just watching the Giant Bomb First Look and I gotta say this looks far more interesting than I thought it would. Weird.

Edit: Then again, after watching the whole thing and it still being the exact same, I can see the boring now I guess.

Knack goes from ignored launch game to a 1400+ reply thread because of bad reviews. Interesting.
lol, right? It's beyond ridiculous how some people tried to act like GAF was overhyping Knack in threads that barely reached 5-6 pages. Now the game is released, reviews are largely negative and there's at least 5 times more attention given that than the game itself ever received here. The Knack OT isn't even a third as long as this thread yet.

The man's accumulating failures for Sony. Vita, Knack and... PS4? We'll see about the last one..

It is interesting because they did the same thing with nba2k14 because of graphics (then found out they hated sports games), killzone (then found out there isn't much substance after the graphics), lauded the controller as the best thing ever and said the xbox one controller was shit (then I held it and found it to be more than acceptable), obviously cerny/knack combo of greatness, laughed at the xb1 for not having 3d playback but then didn't care when sony announced the same thing.

All in all pretty damn entertaining when taken over the long haul. Needless to say I learned quickly that anything said here needs to be taken with a shaker if not a basketful of salt. :)

a very small portion of gaf was hyping knack, me included.

the cerny stuff comes from just who he is in the industry, not simply because of knack.

I really don't think the quality of this game says anything about Cernys abilities as an engineer like some of you are implying.

So I'm assuming you can quickly cite posts of people that explicitly said they expected this to be like Mario? I'm not fully caught up with this thread, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone express that expectation in any of the other Knack threads. Certainly not anywhere near "a lot".

Not explicitly Mario but you have to be yanking my chain if you think people havent been comparing it to the very Mario-esque platformers of the PS1 days like Crash.

If you want to argue semantics fine to win a dumb argument or something, fine I guess no one has compared it to Mario. You win.

Be mad about mario gifs, but if Knack had some gameplay beyond "get big and smash," I bet it would have been better received. Size accumulation would have been a great mechanic to mix in with challenging platforming, navigation of obstacles and level exploration (certain areas open to you small, others require you to be larger).

Don't feel such an overbearing need to live up to your forum name. Trying to accuse GAF of overhyping a game that never managed anything longer than 10 pages before this thread is laughable. The Cerny affiliation bought the game some benefit of the doubt, at best, but hardly anyone was expecting it to be a massive hit or critical darling. You're really out of touch if that's what you think amounts to overhyping for this crowd.

And you have to be yanking my chain to use the semantics excuse since you can't actually cite anyone comparing this game to Mario in any notable fashion, because practically no one has actually done that.

One does not simply compare a game to Mario - that comparison carries a lot more significance and burden of proof for anyone that dares compare another game against Mario.

Crash is as different from Mario as Knack is different again from Crash. That doesn't mean we can't find some evolutionary thread that ties them together in some way, without making some grand, overwrought comparison between the games. Crash gets cited in reference to Knack because the dev team focused on simple core controls, like Crash. Therein lies the extent of the comparison that anyone has really made and which you are trying to conflate into some much bigger, while accusing me of semantics. Yeah, okay.
