PS4 sells through 1 million units on Day 1 in NA, best start in PS / console history

Really strong sales, will be very interesting to see how they hold up and how much worse XBone does.

And yeah, while I'm by no means convinced just yet that the console market will become healthy again, Wii U's problems are pretty specific to that platform and never said much about the health of the broader market.

Apparently:

Playstation 4 - 24hr - over 1 million console sold
PS2 took 3 days to ship 1 million units,
Wii U - 1 week(168hr) - 400 000 console sold
Wii - 8 days(192hr) - 600 000 console sold
Playstation 3 - 2 months - 1 million console sold
Xbox 360 - 2 weeks - 326,000 console sold

I said damn.

I have no idea PS4 did so well compared to predecessors.

Are the above numbers for USA only?

Is it possible that if Sony isn't able to replenish stock in the US until next year, MS will outsell it in 2013?

How would that happen? outside of Al Qaeda blowing up a shipment. Anything Sony had earmarked for the US this year is likely already manufactured, in warehouses, and on it's way.

Just did random checks across several districts and the PS4 received anywhere from 1.5x-2.0x more units not finding any district where the Xbox is showing more. Preorders are really all over the place. Some stores got 2x ps4 preorders while other stores are separated by a couple of units

Interesting, thanks for sharing.

I do think the reason PS4 was November instead of the hoped for October launch was really so they could make sure they had a shit-ton of units available. Hopefully they can restock retailers fast and get many machines into people's hands as possible.

This is the first time i'm witnessing a console launch on neogaf (apart from wiiu and handhelds) and i have to say i'm kinda dissapointed at all the fanboy raging. I'm kind of a fanboy myself for Sony but i dunno... People getting insulted, people lying and saying X console sucks is kinda lame. Both consoles will be good and its just a matter of preferences. What is the point of insulting and dimeaning the other console? i dont get it. Just be excited instead of pissed.

Its not just a neogaf problem, its an internet problem in general for everything. Comes with the anonymous nature/lack of direct communication and body language.

What's sad is seeing fanboys on certain sites trying to downplay the sales. I literally saw people saying

"DONT GET USED TO THESE SALES IT HAS NO GAMES ITS GONNA FIZZLE OUT NEXT WEEK AND WII U WILL BEAT IT!!!!"

Yeah

While those people are incredibly annoying, I do want to add that this has almost no bearing on how well the console will do after christmas and people stating the PS4 as a success straight away are almost as annoying. Personally I expect pretty mediocre numbers from Jan till Oct, obviously Wii U beating numbers, but not anything mind blowing.
I could totally be wrong, but we'll see.

Awesome launch! I kind of expected it to be this huge to be honest. People were reporting alot of stock at retail. It's gonna be interesting how much they are going to ship the coming two weeks, with the xbo launch and black friday coming up!

This makes it seem pretty ridiculous.

Crazy numbers. Sony should do incredibly well this holiday, especially if MS has supply problems. Can't imagine the average consume is gonna sit around waiting to buy a more expensive machine.

Sales will be continously strong with a 2014 lineup of Destiny, Infamous, DriveClub, PlanetSide 2, The Witcher 3, The Order, MGS 5, Uncharted and whatever else that's unannounced for the year.

Edit: Forgot Watch Dogs.

Isn't the biggest debut month of a videogame machine the GBA? It sold like 880k in it's first month.

Wonder if they'll be able to make back the 4billion lost due to the PS3 this gen. (I thought it was more?)

Kinda doubt that considering not even the PS2 made that much cash.

If correct then that's just amazing. What will Sony achieve in a month?

Supplies seem good relative to even this demand. I recall wiis/360s were impossible to find without pre-orders or knowing someone or wakign up bloody early. About half my friends who have one right now picked it up without a pre-order. They just went to a store first at opening.

I wonder if Sony's 3M projection is just their production quota for this year? IT's be a solid start for 42 days. If it's not a production quota it may pass the Wii U THIS YEAR! that's crazy.

You are implying the market is unhealthy? Lmao

don't stress out about it. Corporate losses are usually used to shelter revenue gains in other divisions. Sony isn't looking to "make back" what they lost on the PS3, and MS isn't looking to "make back" what it lost on the original Xbox or RROD fiasco.

Will this be the generation where NPD becomes irrelevant on the software side? Anecdotally I know so many new PS4 users that are going all digital or a mixture of physical and digital.

Edit: nvm mentioned above

Realistically the X1 could beat it In a couple days due to shipping in more countries day one right?

so far both seem to be off to a flying start.

If anything, the rest of the world are all waiting on PS4's, not Xbox One's. Doesn't matter if Xbox One comes out first.

Exactly. If you get a reasonable return on your investment with no effort, then why even bother trying to compete? even if Sony had a repeat of PS2, I can't see then coming out with a PS3 priced machine again, they got burned too badly.

This. Sony simply can't afford another huge blunder (especially financially wise) like they did with PS3.

Isn't every launch month number simply based on supply constraint (maybe with the exception of WiiU, not certain)? In other words comparing these numbers is pointless? Not shitting on PS4, as we can see it would have easily sold more than one million units if they were available. But looking at these numbers feels more like comparing efficiency of the manufacturing process, or something like that. It just feels too early to be comparing numbers here.

Unreal.

It's not only the biggest console launch ever. It's the biggest console launch ever by a fucking massive, MASSIVE landslide.

Looks like the console market is healthier than ever. Bodes very well for the future.

i've been begging for over 5 years.
wow, that is a lot. we are not even to peak shopping season yet. 2 million sold by end of year would be bananas.

I'll tell you one thing -- with 1 million units sold and the crazy b2g1 deals that were out, the PS4 is probably going to have the highest attach rate of any system ever. Those publishers that made launch are going to be dancing in the streets.

Also, most places I've been have had plenty of controllers, but sold out of cameras.

Like you said, even the PS4 is likely supply constrained. The numbers are what they are in *every* situation, even historically: consoles in the hands of consumers, which translate to potential software sales for publishers and developers. Higher is better.

Sony's 3DS?

That should offset the Vita failure.

Considering remote play and the lowish price of the PS4 and vita it may revitalize the Vita. It'll be your nice second screen. I look forward to grinding jRPG's while my wife watches TV.
