The SNES only came into being because of the release of the Genesis. Nintendo wanted to keep rolling with the NES before the Genesis was released IIRC.

lol. Nintendo wouldn't have been able to keep milking the NES even if there was no genesis. They had lost terribly in court, and developers had begun to figure out ways around that NES lockout chip. And besides, sales naturally decline over time as the market becomes saturated. even the gameboy with no real competition was eventually replaced with the GBC and GBA.

And the PS2 was kind of horrible from a hardware perspective and had faulty hardware at launch and was supposed to be the least developer friendly system ever.

PS3, Saturn, and Jaguar are laughing their asses off at this one. The failure rate for the PS2 wasn't anything special either- the 360 and RROD is the all time champ here.

If the PS4 does incredibly while Microsoft and Nintendo leave the market, Sony will still have competition, but it will be towards social gaming so their resources will likely be focused on capturing those areas instead of core gaming so I think you should hope for competition.

again, the tablet/social market and the console market are two completely different markets serving two different audiences. Sony is not chasing them with the PS4, and if they had any thoughts about doing so, the WiiU getting obliterated in the attempt has surely crushed any ideas of doing so. There's more than one reason the camera isn't packed in anymore- the casual market that was crazy about motion control and camera gaming has largely moved on to other things.

Of course the best thing is win-win-win. But this talk of it being bad for the industry if it isnt is nonsense. If Nintendo, sony or Microsoft fail, they have to go back to the drawing board see what the others did and offer a more attractive prospect the next time round. That is what healthy conpetition is, not this "Everyone has to be a winner!" Nonsense.

Exactly. If you get a reasonable return on your investment with no effort, then why even bother trying to compete? even if Sony had a repeat of PS2, I can't see then coming out with a PS3 priced machine again, they got burned too badly.

Even without Japan though, I think 3 million before the new year is still well within the realm of possibility.

Without Microsoft's mandatory Kinect and DRM fiascos, and Nintendo releasing proper next-gen hardware instead whatever the Wii U is, the PS4 would have never gained the traction it did. The system is selling simply because it's the only next-gen option without any major flaws.

There are problems though. But when you sell 1million consoles many are bound to get some duds.

Except for the fact that the majority of the European countries the Xbone launches in this year have never been in Microsoft's favor when it comes to sales.
People don't blindly pick up whatever launches first. People know that the PS4 is mere days away and a hundred bucks cheaper for better hardware.

I'm really curious how MS does this november.

PS4 might have an installed base of well over 3 million before the new year.

Once we start getting games like FFXV, KH3, and other games coming exclusively to PS4 in Japan, we can start to see people move over. Japan just has to step up their game going into this current gen.

shockingly it looks like it still IS supply constrained. everyone is sold out, and new pre orders aren't being honored until February.

There's clearly still demand that isn't being met here, but Sony almost certainly has more shipments coming to counter the Xbox launch and take advantage of black friday.

Demand has to be there for it to sell. If fact, PS4 will be available in many more countries than Xbone by the end of the year. The battle ground is US and UK. If PS4 outsells Xbone in these 2 regions then MS is in deep trouble.

Eh, I ignored the WiiU because there are alternatives available. If WiiU was the only gaming console on the market and PC gaming didn't exist I guess I'd have no choice but to pick one up if I wanted to play some of the games on it.

There are always alternatives to new consoles. PC, smartphones, tablets or even the old consoles (see WiiU or Dreamcast) etc.

Just did random checks across several districts and the PS4 received anywhere from 1.5x-2.0x more units not finding any district where the Xbox is showing more. Preorders are really all over the place. Some stores got 2x ps4 preorders while other stores are separated by a couple of units

Lol. preordering back in August at amazon with no money down was the way to go if you wanted one. Get on my level, son.

but seriously, the "limited quantities" bit means that the stores have a minimum level of stock that they're GUARANTEED to have in place for that day, outside of the launch shipment. This might be only 10 consoles, but they're going to be there.

This is great news for Sony since it means more systems in customer hands- this is bad news for anyone that has to fight through a crowd to grab one though.

Wii U - 1 week(168hr) - 400 000 console sold

Playstation 3 - 2 months - 1 million console sold
Xbox 360 - 2 weeks - 326,000 console sold

This is the first time i'm witnessing a console launch on neogaf (apart from wiiu and handhelds) and i have to say i'm kinda dissapointed at all the fanboy raging. I'm kind of a fanboy myself for Sony but i dunno... People getting insulted, people lying and saying X console sucks is kinda lame. Both consoles will be good and its just a matter of preferences.
