In the last hour I've encountered more Wii U ads than in the previous few months

Matches up with the strategy they said they were following as idiotic as it was. Until Pokémon launched Nintendo was in 3DS mode. Pokémon out means they have shifted to Wii U mode.

I feel Nintendo thinks it must do well this holiday season in the US to turn things around for the Wii U. These type of ads are a good way to start.

Would be a waste of money for Nintendo. Their bread and butter is kids/families, and beyond that it's loyal fans that will buy their stuff anyway. The next step beyond that would be targeting mom's and old people, but they're probably not watching a ton of NFL.

The problem is their loyal fan base is dwindling.

They had a 3 minute long one for Mario on Disney XD.

What? Are you exaggerating for emphasis or was it actually 3 minutes?
That would be insane.

Those Lebron Samsung and Nike commercials are 1-2 minutes and I almost fall asleep during them they're so long.

The Zelda ad aired right immediately after the intro theme segment of South Park this past wednesday - the one about the console wars

I'm so tired of those. The one where he is on the bike as well.

What I don't understand is why all the live action? 3DS and Vita can't avoid it because visuals don't translate as well to HDTV, but stuff like Pikmin 3 and the PS4 XB1 ads really should be able to sell on game visuals.

I see what they are trying to do with Mario and selling 4 player but even then I think 25 seconds of gameplay would do that game sooo much more justice.

This holiday is pretty much what will determine whether the Wii U can scrape by and find some success or be a failed product.
Mario Kart 8 being released in 2014 is still mind boggling.

Gonna be even more difficult with 2 new game consoles on the market around this time of year.

Related, but when I was at the large EB Games in downtown Toronto, they showed a 3D World trailer on the screens and it must've been like 10 minutes long! o_O It was UBER detailed, talking about the characters, abilities, power-ups, etc.

Longest trailer I've ever seen in a store from memory, well done Nintendo!

Might not be 3 but it was long. Felt like an infomercial. They showed a family playing Mario, and talked more about the family than the game.

Not that mind boggling at all. The game isnt finished.

In Belgium they also did a weekend long promotion this weekend at a fairly popular radio station where you could win Wii U's every few hours. That's rather effective for getting the message out.

Well they probably won't catch a ton of them using ads during NFL games, which was my main point. Targeting stuff Adult Swim and Comedy Central would likely be smarter, and they seem to be doing that with AS already at least, based on what I've seen in this thread (I'm not American, so I can't speak from experience).

This.

Further elaboration on their strategy:

Iwata:
"We have an offering of software for the end of this calendar year that encourages family fun at home. Nintendo is preparing a number of Wii U games for
next year that greatly appeal to highly skilled users, but at the end of this calendar year, we have quite a few offerings that can be played by the whole family,
dad and the kids, or grandparents and the kids.

Other companies will launch new consoles (in the overseas markets at the end of this year), but I think they focus on targeting highly skilled users.

Therefore, in that sense, though the competition will heat up because new game consoles will come out and there will be a “war of the game consoles” played
out in media articles, we wonder if the target user will actually be the same. The games available at the end of this calendar year, “Super Mario 3D World,”
“Wii Party U,” “Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games,” “Wii Sports Club” and “Wii Fit U,” all lean more toward family use, and we are targeting
those who bought Wii and would be interested in the Wii U offerings. That is slightly different than what other companies are aiming for.

Thus, in the sense that we attract consumers interested in this category of video games, I think the launch of other video game systems is also good for us
because they energize the video game industry as a whole. Though there are some who take the view that intensified competition means overseas competition
will be tough for Nintendo, no matter how Nintendo does domestically, I do not necessarily see it that way. This year, what Nintendo is promoting is, conversely,
to stand out in the game industry for individuality. I believe we have become a unique value."

I'm playing Pikmin 3 and Wind Waker HD right now. I'm so glad to own this system. Pikmin really surprised me.

Makes sense. This is the big Wii u game this year, and it's the holiday season.

Nintendo should do the same with the big releases next year.

Yeah, that's the Nike one. Shows his Nike shoes for all of 2 seconds in a 2 minute long commercial. Genius.
However, you get all you need to see of nobrand Camoflauge Cargo Shorts.

Ok, so it was one of "those" types. Intentionally long and stuff.

Every commercial break I see a Xbox ad and two Xbone tie-in ads (CoD for example) and one Layton commercial. No PS 4 ads and never a Vita commercial.

They were waiting for the right games to be released. Nintendo is very confident about 3D World, and it's the holidays.

That makes it sound like they knowingly sent it to die last year though. It needed advertising from the start, more people would know about it.

I do agree with a lot in here. Nintendos target is not the people lining up for PS4 or xbone. Its the families that would buy wii sports and mario kart.

However they kinda botched it so far. Hopefully they will be able to reach those people with more ads.

Haven't seen many in the UK yet AND I watch a lot of cartoons :p

Me neither, only one for Layton and one for the 3DS family (including the 2DS) on channels such as Sky when they air The Simpsons. Never saw any commercial for Wii U in other words.

Mind you, when I was living in The Netherlands, seeing any gaming related commercial on tv - Nintendo related or not - was so rare that it always felt really special (i.e. like it finally existed outside of my own little world).

Odd, that gaming marketing budgets are spent so differently / differ so greatly(?) between the US and Europe even when gaming in general seems to be as evenly supported in both areas.

Bought the Zelda bundle today, for daughter's Christmas present but who's kidding who, I'll be playing it as much as her. Feeling kinda hopeful things will start improving for the system from here on, but even if it just keeps grinding along as a sales flop we'll end up with the same 25 or so games on our bookshelf.

Don't forget that the 3DS was fully doomed at one year after launch.

Well, I don't know if it means more than it is but SM3DW is number 1 in the Amazon US pre-orders. A little something is maybe working...?

Is Nintendo advertising the Skylanders bundle? That would be smart.

Which is why Nintendo likely isn't going to do it. I would be pushing that as if it was my own game. Trying to get up ads similar to ads Microsoft does for games where the only logo at the end is the Wii U logo and the only box shown is the Wii U version. I'd be doing the same thing with Disney Infinity.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

They have that for Just Dance.

Really need to advertise that Skylanders bundle- that's a pretty great deal.

I only ever see ads on Nick and on CN at certain hours.

The last Nintendo ad I saw was last week when watching Korra.

Personally, Nintendo is focusing on a narrow and focused market. This company hasn't been targeting target the general casual market for sometime it seems.

It's starting to hit its stride now. The third party support is abysmal, but the big Nintendo heavy hitters are coming soon.

I've been watching ABC Family for a good part of today and I must have seen the Mario 3D World commercial at least 15 times so far, it feels like.

I wonder if it's been like this on other channels, haha. I've seen more WiiU ads today than I've seen since release!

I hope to hell Nintendo panicked after the PS4 debut and go all out up on this bitch.

It might be to late to see any evidence of that this holiday season. However if they do get scared by it, and they should (even more so if the Xbox One does similar numbers), we might hopefully see a reaction come the new year or during the next big Nintendo Direct that talks about 2014 software. Which ever comes first.

As a Wii U and 3DS owner I do hope those numbers have scared. I do hope the Xbox One numbers scared them. I want them to react to them by increasing advertising. By putting out ads fully explaining the Wii U is simple terms. I want them to react to this by then bundling Super Mario 3D World. Then be hiring or contacting more studios to increase their output and put nearly all Nintendo franchises into play. No of this holding back on an IP because they can't think of anything new for it ala F-Zero.

The same thing in Japan. I've seen a relative ton of ads for Wii U/Mario in the last 2 weeks and have seen Nintendo sponsoring various programs, too.

If they work, and then Ninty can keep up a release schedule in Q1 next year (they need to have MK8 in March, after DK in Feb), they'll maybe have a shot at keep up some momentum for the console.

Nah, the loyal fanbase is the 3mil who bought the Wii U at launch.

I don't think that's true. Some Nintendo fans will only buy the console when the games they want come out. Those type of games tend to be 3D Mario, Zelda, Kart and Smash, none of which have come out for the system.

I saw a Wii U ad yesterday. I was happy to see not only that Nintendo is actually advertising it (seriously, why have they been so stingy with their ad dollars up until now?) and that the ad was about how it's a great system for local multiplayer that the family can enjoy together. That's a smart approach, I think.
