Knack Review Thread

I've never understood the Nintendo hype, and the sales statistics for DS and 3DS are unreal in Japan. I've got Nintendo and Sony systems, and I must say that I find it amusing why a lot of people rate Nintendo games so high and Sony's so low.

I don't buy in to hype generated by reviews or posts by users. A good review or recommendation might sway me to buy a game and try it, however my personal opinion will always be based on my own experiences though.

I'd rate Ratchet and Clank just as high as Zelda from my own tastes and experience of playing the games. Though some on each series would rate higher than others. I just like the humour and style more.

Knack from what I've seen would deserve a try, and my 4 year old would no doubt enjoy it even more. Some of the review scores are ridiculous judging by what I've seen, and when did reviewers stop reviewing games based on target audiences? Of course the FPS crowd won't necessarily rate a game aimed at casual/family members appropriately, especially when basing it off of their own tastes.

Reviewers, please try to base your articles towards the intended target audiences...

I think they tend to rate them based on how much they enjoy them, and I suppose in some cases they'll recognize a game aimed at another market has its own merits.

I don't they'd give these games 10s though... maybe a 7 or so? Which isn't far off from Knack...

LMAO @ the GI review. That publication is practically sponsored by publishers and will put a high number on any piece of shit.

Like Sonic Lost world?

Going through reviews for their other games makes me trust them a lot more than joystiq and polygon. Although the eurogamer review will get a read from me now. I don't disagree with what he is saying - but that score is not right, off by too much. 4/10 is something no one should play and from the impressions we've been hearing, that's just rubbish.

I played this game last night and so far, for me, it's a solid 7. Maybe 7.5. I'm not usually bugged by low review scores, but it makes you wonder. Course, just my opinion vs another...

I love the game and cant comprehend the super low scores by some sites. Its not a 9 but its not a 3 or 4 either.

I was dismayed when I heard the bad reviews on this game, but I have seen a lot of people disagreeing with the reviews. I am once again looking forward to getting my hands on this game.

Frankly, I think it's just because Nintendo IPs are so strongly established. Mario, Zelda, and Metroid have been with us since the NES. There is a lot of nostalgia there.
Stop it. The first guy is readily stating he hasn't played the game and bitching about the reviews and you want to argue it's nostalgia? Just stop. What does Nintendo have to do with a Sony reviewed game? Sony needs to up it's money hat game. Can't come to this million dollar party with 20 bucks. Tell cheap ass Sony to go get a hair cut, wash up, brush his teeth and come back with more money.

I have a 4 year old boy and he is in love with this game. He even said loud "this game is awesome!" And he is playing it all by himself on easy. The wife and I are watching TV while he is in my gaming area eating it up. I only got to play the tutorial, he is hours into the game. :( It looks fun anyway!

$400 purchase vindicated for the pure fun he is having. After he falls asleep tonight maybe I will be able to play the system...

yeah where is that dude giving me a hard time for not immediately returning my copy of Knack because "gaffers played hands on and it was SHIT!! LOL!" ?

review consensus on this one is wrong, it happens from time to time,

for me, i get the satisfaction of playing a solid game, and the satisfaction of not being a sheep. win, win.

3/5 = 60/100. The metacritic average is 59/100. Seems like, at least score-wise, the average review is near dead on.

yeah, i suppose youre right, it's just that generally i apply the stigma rightfully or wrongfully that anything below a 7 in game journo biz = bad.

hmm maybe i should pick up sonic lost world haha

Played this game till somewhere in chapter 3. Its not bad, once again gonna say rev3 review was pretty spot on.

I think I know why this game turned off so many people and just seemed lame, its because of the music. The music sucks its so boring it sounds like it wants to put you to sleep. On top of that its missing that wit and good / funny characters these games need. Like crash and the brain villain from those games. Or daxter. Knack didn't get a proper personality and all the supporting characters a just lame, even the villain is not interesting. That's what really hurts the game. It seems like it takes it self seriously for some reason.

I also have an issue with the enemy encounters. They are (so far) set up in a very predictable and repetitive way. Its fun to fight all the different types of enemies and there is actual challenge but the pacing is very monotonous.

there is a really great game in here somewhere, maybe for a sequel but this first try is an ok game.

I went ahead and opened it. The reviews were overly harsh. It is more of a 7.5 type of game (no where near a 4-5/10 ;p), definitely fun to play although I can see how it would be boring at easier difficulty levels. Needs more personality as others have said and more variety in the enemies.

I've always had very little faith in the media's ability to properly critique games. After the Arkham Origins fiasco I think it completely shattered what was left, if anything. I can't take any of them seriously anymore. So I'm not surprised to see almost universal praise of Knack in various threads since PS4 launched.

I think it would be safer to cut it through the middle. Reviewers hate it, players praise it. Take the two extremes and cut in down the middle.

Right, I'm not about to automatically take endless praise 100% seriously either. That's how I ended up suffering through Nier. But at the same time it felt like reviewers weren't understanding the point of this game. Who knows maybe I'll agree, but nothing I've seen of the game makes me think "yeah that's a 3/10". I still think it's going to be the first PS4 game I try on Monday.

I got this as part of Target's B2G1 deal and after the shitty reviews, I contemplated returning it for another game. After reading the GAF reviews, I'm glad I didn't.

Looking forward to playing it after KZ and AC4.

Just make sure to play hard mode.

After playing up to chapter 4-1 today on Hard, I still don't see why such overly bad scores were given. It's been a solid game to me

I just beat the game on hard, and it was a solid 7-7.5 for me. This game is great for small kids - the story is like an old Saturday morning cartoon. The checkpoint system wasn't really that bad, I actually grew to like it when i was able to predict when they would be. It gives the fighting the last encounter right before a checkpoint a lot more weight if you know you have to go back 3-4 encounters. I plan to write up a thorough review later.

Beat the first real boss, on to level 4. Starting to go from "it's good" to really loving it. Final nail in reviewers coffins as far as I am concerned.

I'm up to Chapter 7 and I don't see why this game got low scores like 3/10. I think the game is an easy 7/10, but I usually disagree with reviews so no surprise there...

I've been posting in the Knack OT, but I have to say that this may be the most I've ever disagreed with reviewers about a game (or even movie).

I loved it. Graphics were gorgeous, art style was very unique, story was simple yet engaging, and the platforming and combat options were minimal but well executed.

Can you please live stream the first 20 minutes of Killzone Shadowfall?

Damn, people sure are brutal toward this game!

I'm afraid I can't relate with them, though. I'm a bit into chapter 4 on normal difficulty and really enjoying it.

It's like people hate Knack for having a simple concept. I'd understand that if the execution were poor, but it really isn't. The game is challenging and demands you to be aware of the situation in each combat scenario. It does what it sets out to do quite well, I'd say.

This game feels like the closest thing we have gotten to a 3D version of Classic NES Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden games. I mean that in a very positive way.

Giantbomb - 2/5

"Knack is a bad game not because it doesn't work, but because the way it's intended to work is devoid of anything resembling personality, creativity, or even a basic level of excitement. It's a product in the most soulless sense of the word, and it's not deserving of you or your family's time." - Alex Navarro

Pretty brutal closing there.

Douchebag. Yes, me.
This game is damn hard. I'm up to the 3 super archer spawns that happen in level 2 and I die over and over. And I'm playing on normal.

It is like Dark Souls for kids.

Alex said that the game's checkpoint system is "shockingly infrequent," but I really didn't feel that at all. I've died a lot in this game and, at most, I think I've been set back by maybe two combat encounters, which is like a minute or two of gameplay. The checkpoints seem fine to me. Does he want a checkpoint before every combat encounter or something?

I really love this game. My wife has something to play that's a throw back to the Crash days. It's a really fun challenging platformer.

Two tips to enjoy Knack to a fuller degree.
1. Skip every cut scene. Skip. Every. Cut scene. They are unnecessary and they don't make any sense.
2. Ignore the moments when the game takes control away from you for a brief moment to make Knack jump up or down an obstacle.

Nintendo's Pro Bono PR Firm
new review up from Jeremy Parish over at USGamer

http://www.usgamer.net/articles/knack-review-sure-its-a-kids-game-if-you-hate-kids

once again overly harsh (he also gave Killzone a 2/5)
Jeremy Parish said:
Platinum made a much better kid's game this fall than Knack: The Wonderful 101. Sure, it's not as visually spectacular, but it's every bit as colorful as Knack -- and there's a whole lot more variety and creativity to its action, too. Not only that, but The Wonderful 101 works on multiple levels; you can play it in a straightforward manner and see the ending, but if you take the time to master its mechanics you can really get the most out of the experience. Meanwhile, Knack is the first melee action game I've seen in years that doesn't grade you on performance and technique at the end of a chapter. And for good reason: There's no room for technique in this game. It's nothing more than a monotonous slog to the end.
Would you say that Knack don't work on many levels, at all?

Poor review from Giant Bomb and mainly because the review just enjoyed to bash a game to get the applause from a bunch a kids. The comment below the review are just so sad that I can't believe we are talking about videogames.

Looks like, in these days, there are two world in the gaming world : the gamers and the reviewers.

If you're insuting that Nintendo games get a free pass, or have some kind of advantage when reviewed, I would have to disagree.

Maybe some games are good and some games are bad, independent of who made them. Sunshine (I actually really liked it), was not the best recieved game. 3D World, until it's recent showing, did not look impressive and everyone thought so. Zelda, well, as a series always has had heavy criticism. Some of them get high scores because they're still good, but reviewers definitely point out the problems with them.

Right now I'm at the start of Chapter 10. Based on the trophies, I'm almost done.

The combat is simple, you can consider it lacking if you may. However, the difficulty makes up for that. You have 3 face buttons for actions, dodge via the right stick, and no, you can't button mash your way through it. The enemies don't all act the same and you have to think about how to attack. This definitely isn't to be rushed through.

I can't refute a lot of what the reviews say but somehow it's all clicking for me. I guess it's similar to how I can sit down and get absorbed into a Dynasty Warriors game every now and then (although Knack is better than those). I'm only on chapter 3 but it's a solid 6/10 for me right now. I'm enjoying the light strategy it takes to kill most groups of enemies on Hard.

Here is my own personal video review for Knack. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyoPubbon6g

Nice review. Pretty much exactly how I felt about the game.

I feel the game gets better in the later levels. It looks better too. That 6 may inch up a notch.

Agreed. I can see that it's limited, but I don't have a problem with that. It plays well, it looks nice, and it's a nice palate cleanser from Killzone. Hard mode seems to be the way you're intended to play it. I'm wondering if the reviewers blazed through on easy and think less of it for that.

Edit: I've been thinking about it and the games Knack remind me the most of are the Maximo games. Similar cadence to battle, similar difficulty level.
