PS4 Hardware Troubleshooting / Q&A Thread

I want to get the Sony extended warranty through the psn store, but if I do it will be tied to that console and is nontransferable should I exchange this ps4 at the store I purchased it from.

Right as of now everything seems to be running fine, no hardlocks, no freezing, etc., but I am wondering what I should watch/listen for?
Is there anything I may not be noticing that is an indication of potential issues?

Any advice or help anyone can offer me would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You have a year from date of purchase to buy the extended warranty from sony so I'd just wait until your original 1 year warranty was about to expire.

"The PlayStation® Protection Plans are available for purchase by customers who are still within their original one-year limited warranty. Accidental Damage Plans are available to anyone who has purchased a system in the past 30 days."

http://us.playstation.com/support/protection-plan/faqs/index.htm

Just curious if anyone found out if the uneasy sitting of the console when its laying flat was unintentional or was a plastic nub on the bottom missing. Seems if your facing the console it should of been on the left side of console to keep it laying perfecting flat.

Second question is has anyone found a rubber nub that is small enough to fix the problem.

I got mine on Friday via Amazon, but was holding on to this for a Christmas family gift. With all the talk of DOA units, I opened it up just to see if it would boot.

Manufactured Sept. 2013... China, like most people here. Boots up fine. Quickly from pulsing blue line to solid white. Stopped at the set-up screen... powered down and restarted. No problem. Powered down, unplugged, plugged back in, started up again. No problem.

Didn't do OS update or anything. Figure I'll load up a USB stick with the latest version closer to Christmas.

All seems fine (fingers crossed!), though I couldn't take it fully out for a spin. But not a complete DOA out of the box at least. Back in the closet it goes for five weeks.

Yeah... tried to put in the settings for remote play and it just froze, like the background thing was moving but the controller wasn't responding and the square around the text when i pressed X kinda dissapeared(like the animation when you press x was just like stopped)

I left my room(it was in the morning),for like 30 seconds came back and it was back to the XMB.
tried to do it again, and It frooze again, tried to press the PS button but I had the deny sign coming up in the top right corner(like black) tried to press circle, after like 30 secs-1min it went to the blue background and stayed like that(animation behind was moving slowly like normal)

So i just unpluged it and repluged it went through the recovery mode checked it, gave me the warning to not unplug it again yada yada yada, and I just stayed the fuck away from vita remote play settings.

Now its on standbymode since 7:20 am est, will come back home around 9pm(it's downloading things I got 5mbps internt >_>) I just hope it doesn't die.
Anyways anyone had this problem?!!

SO earlier I posted about my Ps4 occasionally no having any audio when I wake it from standby mode, and that a restart resolves the issue.

I also managed to fix it just now without a restart, but by simply removing the HDMI cable from the Ps4 and then plugging it back in.

So given that, does it seem like the Ps4 is causing the issue of occasionally not having sound, or my HDMI cable/TV?

Anyone?

Here I was hoping I was going to be the only person in my group of friends to get a bad PS4, well just found out another one got a bad one, sucks. His had the flashing blue light and wouldn't boot into safe mode or output any video at all.

Not really a major issue, but I think I've seen videos of the UI where if you press down while highlighting whichever game application tile you are on it's supposed to open like an info panel similar to the what's new application. The only problem is that nothing happens when I press down on any of the games I have installed. Maybe they just disabled that stuff temporarily?

So last night, I'm playing through a couple levels of Killzone SP, and I noticed that the fan in my PS4 is getting pretty loud. It didn't cut off or anything but it was at least as loud as my phat PS3 used to be before it YLOD on me (Maybe PC under load loud?).

Is this normal with that game or should I be worried?

Received my coffin earlier today hopefully i get a new system made in October or November...
Hopefully a new update is out before i receive a new system.. The rep said since its a ps4 i shoulda receive it faster than the 10-14 day return.

I don't have a PS4 yet, but I really do have to commend Sony on how quickly they are addressing issues and handing out replacements. I remember waiting upwards of 4 weeks for a replacement Wii and 360 when both broke down within a couple of weeks of launch.

That's what I love to see and I hope if there are any issues with the UK launch (fingers crossed there won't be), they are just as quick to respond...

So all the issues aside the only thing that worries me and sounds like a user error more than anything is the HDMI cable. Do you think some people tried to blindly put it in and bended it in the process?

So yea. Sony really needs help. Decided since I didn't have coffin still to chat them again. No record of my service request or chat conversation. Needless to say I'm beyond pissed. So I chat up Amazon and they're like bam we'll get you a label to return yours but we're also sending a replacement out overnight. I'm like cool. So 10 minutes after them doing that what shows up via fedex but the coffin that Sony has no record of.

I just can't stop laughing my ass off. I really can't.

I had a small issue, only once, which is making me nervous my system may be a dud. I initially turned on the console without problem, and then upon restart I received the pulsing blue light. I was able to hold down the power button and force a restart but not without it doing a system check. I was convinced the issue was with the TV not being on before the PS4, but I have been unable to replicate. Anyone else have a similar one off issue like this? Now that my vita is linked up, I wonder if I would be able to connect for remote play even it is not able to display anything on the TV(due to HDMI issues)...

Did Amazon say they were overnighting you a replacement PS4?

Yeah dealing with Amazon is a whole lot easier, you can give Sony some feedback to follow Amazon's gold standard of service. Which I did, after having to wait over 2 hours and getting BS about over two weeks to get a replacement system.

Yup. Preparing to ship now. It's labeled as Replacement PS4.

Yea Sony really could learn from them. No doubt about that.

Mine did the same last night I think. Tonight I will try to take out the disc and play a hard drive game to see if it's the fan (heat related) or if it was just the disc drive. It seems it should not be too loud, even under load. I will give it til the end of the week or so before I decide if it's an issue or just the normal console noise.

Anyone have any issues with the Blu Ray player in their PS4? I put Avengers in and it took a little while to get going. Plus it didnt save my Audio Output. I had it switched it from HDMI to Optical out right before I put the disc in.

Sounds like it might be the HDMI Link option. Do you have it turned on?

I did run into an issue where the PS4 was outputting in Stereo rather than Surround because I started the system before my receiver was fully on. Looks like some kind of handshake issue.

If you are outputting to a receiver then make sure the TV and receiver are powered on before waking the PS4. Seems like a software bug.

Finally received my PS4 from Samsclub.com but they shipped it in a freaking plastic Fedex bag. No support, no padding for additional protective or anything. Something tells me my chances of having to post in this thread are about even.

So my system is no longer outputting sound. I played Killzone for a bit last night then turned off the system(not standby). Come back just now and I have no sound....

I have not changed anything connection wise and my PS3 and 360 both work fine.

I'm hooked up via optical from my receiver to my tv with PS4 hooked up to tv via HDMI.

This shit is really starting to piss me the fuck off. First the disc drive now this.....

Edit:Ok so apparently I lose audio unless I keep the system in standby mode.....

I ordered from Samsclub too. I received my system in the same non-existent packaging and have similar worries. I had the one issue mentioned above, keeping my fingers crossed it was just a fluke.

Same here.

So whats the magic words that makes amazon send my replacement ps4?

I dunno my chat started off like this. Maybe it was how it started. Name changed to screen name of course. PsychoRaven isn't my real name. lol

08:21 PM(GMT) Amazon(CSA): Hello PsychoRaven! My name is Adrian! I'll be happy to help you
08:22 PM(GMT) PsychoRaven: Well hopefully you'll be of more help then Sony was to me.
08:23 PM(GMT) Amazon(CSA): I'm sorry to hear that they were not able to assist you, I will do my best.
08:25 PM(GMT) Amazon(CSA): I just have to do some research to see what is the best option we have available for you. Would you mind holding while I do this for you?

My ps4 did the blue light blinking thing after updating. All I did was pull the power cord and booted intobsafe mode. Restarted the ps4 and boom I'm up and running.

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread but I was hoping for some help regarding audio options with the PS4. For my PS3, I am currently using a HDMI to DVI cable for my Dell U2412M monitor - which is speakerless. For audio, the PS3 is connected to a Dell AX510 soundbar via a RCA to 3.5mm cable with composite cables. The soundbar doesn't have an optical audio port, so I'm not really sure what my options are regarding audio for PS4.

Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like a handshaking issue with the TV. Have you tried shutting down the TV instead of the system?

So, uh... I was in the middle of playing Killzone when my controller suddenly disconnected. I kept running in a straight line in game as if I were moving in that direction on the analog stick, but none of my inputs were being registered and hitting the home button did nothing. The controller just lost its connection to the console. Didn't reconnect until I put the system on standby and rebooted.

So bizarre. Has anyone else had that?

Yeah and this last time just now that it had this issue I turned on my PS4 using the controller before the TV was even on. I did try turning it off and on as well just a black screen.

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is an "HDMI Link Option"? Is it on the TV menu?

I can't recall right now whether or not this has happened only when I turn on my Ps4 BEFORE my TV, so I'll try that once I get home.

Anyways anyone had this problem?!!

I had an issue where remote play caused the OS to completely stall. I ended up being dumped to a screen where I could report the issue to Sony, but then the OS would stall any time I tried to input something in the optional text field. In my case the blue background would freeze while the system was "hung".

Any idea what might account for shitty wifi download speeds after re-initialization? Sony instructed me to initialize my PS4 in an attempt to fix the system from blowing like a Hoover vacuum 24/7. When I first got the system, downloads were super quick. Now, after initializing the system again...slow to a crawl. Haven't changed anything else in my setup (cable modem and wireless router haven't been touched--using an Airport Express).

One thing about Sony UK, they are amazing with turnaround on broken consoles. Ive had 3 PS3s Breakdown on me with various issues, and each time they have had someone at my house the next day to pick it up.

Twice they gave me a replacement, there and then.

Is anyone's downloads on the PSN extremely slow?
I do the speed test and I get between 3.5mbps and 4.25mbps, same as what I get on my PC. Hulu and Netflix stream perfectly fine at 720p.
I downloaded Resogun which is under 500mb and it took me over an hour to get it. This is not normal.

HDMI Link is an option on the PS4. It allows other HDMI devices to control your PS4 for various functions. It's off by default which I think is the better setting.

It may be called HDMI Control on your TV or receiver. I turn it on for my receiver that way when I power my TV on, it will automatically power on my receiver and change to the external speakers. I'm not clear on what all control is given on the PS4 yet but if it's on, it could be part of your problem or who knows, may actually fix the problem if it's off. There's a missing handshake somewhere.

I finally got my PS4 from Amazon today which was shipped Saturday the 16th from Amazon's location in Breinigsville, PA. Console says it was manufactured in Hongfujin Yantai China on September 2013. I am about to set it up on my LG LM8600. Will let you guys know how everything went in a few hours (or minutes). Wish me luck.

If I use a HDMI 1.3 cable, instead of the bundled 1.4 cable, am I missing out on any type of functionality?

I'm of the assumption that 1080p, 60fps and 7.1. surround sound can travel down a HDMI 1.3. cable? I'm not interested in 3D and my TV is 1080p.

Hmm, if you're experiencing poor speeds as well, you and I may have the same problem: PSN?

Guys what's with all HDCP talk? PS4 forces HDCP for games, not only Blu Rays?
How do i check if my TV is HDCP compilant? I've been playing PS3 and 360 with no issues. Should i try some Blu Ray on PS3? All Blu Rays that you play on PS3 forces HDCP, so it plays- TV is compilant, and of not it's not. Right?

PS3, like PS4 has HDCP turned on for everything. If your PS3 works via HDMI, your monitor is HDCP capable.

So I had my first 2 crashes (consecutively) after loading up NBA2K14. First one when I tried to load "MyCareer" and 2nd when I was just browsing menu options. Hard locked, had to hardboot (once with button reset, other required plug pull :/ )

I'm a bit weary of this, since Killzone loaded and seemed to run fine. Hoping it's isolated to NBA2K. Anyone else having NBA crashes only? Man, I don't wanna have a bum unit.

Just an update, two of my friends who also imported from the states after buying from Amazon just got their consoles and are working properly. Their boxes weren't beat up like mine, but one of the consoles had the little piece of metal problem on the HDMI port, he put the little piece down and could connect his HDMI cable without problems.
