Xbox One Hardware/UI Review Thread

The main issue I think, is it has a bit of a learning curve like google voice, you have to know when to speak and when not to.Also many of the reviews have multiple ppl talking and them not knowing the system right. I'am sure after a few days of using the X1 the voice commands will work well because people will know how to use them correctly.

I didn't have hardly any problems with Google Voice search when I tested it & I'm from the South.

Google Voice Search using the PlayStation Eye Mic Array

But I agree that it's going to work a lot better once people adjust to the system.

I don't think anybody said it would crash and burn, I actually think the reviews have been pretty accurate with predictions, only the awful voice recognition is the shocker.

You've got people crying that reviewers didn't make a big enough deal about the One's perceived deficiencies compared to the PS4. It's idiotic.

It's the same as a sports car comparison where one is endlessly praised for its voice navigation while the other receives little to no praise for having both more power and a significantly cheaper price point. It's just bad writing and reasoning.

Shit, some people are really catching feelings in here.

Sorry the One didn't crash and burn like you wanted it to guys.

Feels like that way....I'll probably buy a PS4 eventually but the tech and features that Microsoft have put into the box are really exciting, it does look like next gen.

The problem with the PS4 is that it's mainly a gaming machine with nothing much else at the moment but at launch, it actually looks like the xbox has better games

There are so many minor to midlevel gripes to consider from what I have read through thus far

  • reports of Picture Degradation (maybe minimal) when using HDMI IN
  • Surround Sound issues from HDMI IN
  • reports of Noticeable lag from HDMI IN
  • No HDD management at all
  • No controller Battery power level
  • Reports of minute long boot times
  • Kinect still seems to be somewhat hit or miss for voice

Is anyone keeping track of these as I find it hard to keep up with this thread and all the reviews?

Is there any review that mentions if the Kinect can be placed on top of a TV without buying an extra mount?

If your TV has a large enough surface on top and is very stable I can't see why not.

My TV has a decent area on top I can sit it on and I'll do what I did with the last Kinect and use some velcro to keep it on. Never once did it wobble at all, velcro is amazing stuff.

Other than fashioning something yourself pretty sure you'd need some sort of mount.

Well, it's not like that at all, but ok. Maybe, JUST MAYBE, certain reviewers are choosing to focus on the experience delivered as opposed to raw numbers.

For some people, the extra horsepower of the PS4 will deliver what they consider a superior experience. Others will prefer certain XBone features.

Why is that such a difficult concept for some people to grasp?

Such a terrible UI. Metro UI (I refuse to call it “Modern”) is just a mess.
Well, I like it on PC (when properly configured) and I find it really useful. XBONE UI looks awful though.

This is mine for comparison (far from perfect, also not using 8.1 which gives user an option to change the size of icons):

Let's see the launch week past before we all start gloating, eh?

I dont have a dog in this fight and I'm certainly not gloating.

I just think it's asinine to claim that preferring the XBone experience over the PS4 experience at the moment is misleading or as one fool put it, "shameful".

They could keep voice commands as well, sans Kinect.

They totally could but they won't. At least not until Kinect is totally dead as a product.

They have spent too much time and money convincing suckers that Voice commands = Kinect. And they aren't going to retreat on that till the last moment.

A review by any reasonable journalist should attempt to cover all facets of a consumer electronic device comparison

If you were reading reviews by journalists of various TV models and they only talked of the smart tv options without mentioning that one of the 2 tvs was stuck at 720p versus 1080p for the other would that not seem silly to you? (don't mean this as a direct analogy, XB1 is capable of 1080p etc.)

There is no reason why you wouldn't talk about hardware spec or power differentials

The closest hardware reviews for this type of things would be laptops wherein which you would literally spend most of the time on hardware spec comparisons

I had a look at the Sketchfab model of the Xbox [1], and it seems indeed to need an additional mount for TVs. It was the same with the original Kinect, IIRC.

Do the same as I did and just buy a mount. If you don't need it, you can send it back.

The broken HDMI-passthrough is indeed bullshit. This is one of the things that just has to work for people to use it. I wanted to connect my AppleTV to it, but as long as it corrupts the quality, I just won't do it. The stereo downmix is a joke.

I wasn't expecting to use voice navigation, but the reliability seems to be a joke as well. 90% reliability doesn't sound to bad at first sight, but if you imagine every tenth command to do nothing or - worse - something else, just just won't use it.

Kinect has to work perfectly or not at all. Even though it's seemingly a huge step up from the previous model (which was so bad I'm amazed MS ever released it to consumers), if I have to fucking repeat myself at all I ain't using it.

but it sounds like the OS is optimised for voice, and can be a bit difficult to find/do things when using the controller - eg game DVR sounds horrible without voice. So kind of rock-hard place potentially?

some of this realisation is interesting. I guess when a product isn't out yet, and all you've seen is descriptions or controlled demos, you can project your imagination onto what it is capable of.

Why is this hardware review thread full of so much contempt?

The main PS4 thread here is quite large and filled with complaints about what the system does and doesn't do. Many of those issues are replied to with "probably get patched pretty soon" or something similar.

Why is it that the One is being attacked for not being perfect out the box when many of you know that some of these issues will probably be ironed out and fairly soon?

Both of these companies should have had their shit together but they don't, obviously. It's too much to ask that they be given the same treatment?

That's my TV... it's rather thin. I thought the Kinect might come with some plating or clamp that lets you attach it rather easy. The minimum height is said to be 60cm but my TV rack is just 30cm high. :(

Polygon describes that the Kinect blasts the room with IR to change the channel on the cable box? Wouldn't there be some room for failure without something that can reflect the beam?

Sorry for this question as it must have already been answered but,

If I plug my PC to the HDMI in, will I be able to snap it to any game im playing? Or the snap feature does not work with the HDMI in?

Also, if I plug it into the HDMI will I be able to get a signal to the TV if the xbox is in standby?

From what I got, I think that some features are actually only accessible with the controller, like pinning and deleting of tiles.

First off, price always matters. So do the nitty gritty details, like the more powerful GPU. Those sorts of things are very tangible. How 'appealing' the Xbox UI is, for instance, is not. I personally loathe metro even though I use Windows 8. If a writer wants to give the impression that the XB1 is the better UI experience, that's fine. There are things - like the UI - that are open to interpretation and you can readily follow whatever site or reviewer that best mimics your personal train of thought. However, the writer should not mislead people into believing that there are no shortcomings by omitting them, or by moving the goalposts when discussing the strengths of the PS4.

I learned that the kinect will read when you place the controller down and puts it in what seems like a standby mode, so as not to waste battery. Amazing.

I'm confused as to how the ps4 thread is different. You said it's full of complaints (as is this one) and it's filled with people saying it will get better over time (as is this one).

If people are being harder on the xbox one than the ps4 it's because it billed itself as an all in one box that seemingly doesn't live up to that promise yet. The ps4 billed itself as a game machine with share/streaming and it does both of those things wonderfully.

That's Microsoft's fault, not ours. They said it would take over the living room. Most reviews say it's a step back in controlling your living room.

But, like the Sony thread, there are many people pointing out it will get better. There's no need to get defensive.

In a nutshell:

Nextgen - Well at least the potential is there.

Anyway, hardware reviews for both consoles are more or less exactly what I expected them to be. The Xbox One inching slightly ahead of the PS4 for reasons that relate to its more ambitious vision.

Don't know about you guys but I'm damned excited for what both consoles are going to bring to the table. It's easy to dismiss all the millions of dollars and thousands of hours spent on the development of these machines by guffawing at missed Kinect voice commands or an unstable PS4 UI update. I'm going to side with game and tech journalism here - it's an exciting moment for the enthusiasts and anchoring oneself in the nitty gritty is pointless given how fluid these systems are and where they intend to take us over the course of the next decade. Together, Sony and MS and redefining the home entertainment space, and in doing so are striving towards convenience in their own respective ways, which are not too dissimilar.

You have the world's best software and hardware manufacturing companies creating video game consoles. If that doesn't instill hope for you about the next 10 years for both visions, then I have no idea what will.

Better games? geez thats getting old
Its pretty much a wash between the two. Just say you prefer the exclusives.

Previous gen Sony got flack for similar reasonings that reviewers are deciding to ignore on the Xbox this generation (pricepoint // power // functionality). Sony is being nitpicked for the Ps4 not having here/now features and Xbox is getting passes for "coming soon" even though Ps4 also has coming soon claims. Kinect is being inconsistant in the reviews, yet still scores high on the system even though Kinect is the controversial piece of the console? Whatever you choose to view, its obvious bias.

I don't think a review should be a comparison. Let each device stand on its own merits and failings. Respect me enough as a reader to be able to compare bullet points and make my own value judgements.

Well why is one form of advertising okay and not the other? I just find it funny that people that normally soak in ads everywhere in society and more often than not through stuff they have paid for for unrelated reasons, have suddenly turn into anti-advertising zealots.

Ads are not inherently bad, and from what I've seen of XB1's UI, they are not intrusive to the experience at all.

What? One is forced and one isn't, it is that simple...if you cant see why people are upset, then nothing will change your mind about it.

What is New is only there if you click down and see what is new, you are free to avoid it at all times, XBOX ONE so far looks like as soon as you move from the home menu, ads will be on the other panels.

Hopefully its minimal,I hope they don't over do it as the console itself looks fun to use, bring on the games.

Eurogamer:

That's the best summary of the situation I've seen and mirrors my feelings. Sony did an wonderful job creating an amazing gaming system at an awesome price that's sure to be supported by some of the best games. That's a great deal for gamers. I can fully understand why most are in that camp. Years ago, I would be there too.

However, I'm past those years. Been around long enough to have enjoyed my share of game consoles. I'm ready for something that aims toward the future and is willing to gamble at being revolutionary. For as amazing as the PS4 is, it's playing it safe. It's more of what we've already gotten only done much better. It's a PS3 on steroids and that's a great thing. That's exactly what many core gamers want and what will serve them best.

But what intrigues me at this point is something that is willing to take risks and push this industry forward. Three OS's, snapping, cloud, kinect, hdmi input, DVR, and IR blasting for full living room home theater control. Maybe those innovations pay off and become new standards for all consoles. Or maybe they fizzle and die. That's what's so exciting about it.

the future revolves around overlaying a guide on live TV, like the original Tivo boxes did 10 years ago?

Both companies have work to do to convince me they deserve to be my primary method of consuming media. PS4 could do live TV via IPTV which they are looking into, or bringing out a next gen version of PlayTV. Xbox could integrate more deeply with select cable boxes so you can search and set up recordings.

Obligatory 'this'. I don't remember the last time I disagreed with this person.
Full disclosure: My blood is mostly Huangjiu right now, so I don't remember much.

We can not allow for differing opinions, it just complicates things too much.

So...PS4 billing itself as a games machine but showing a dearth of quality titles at launch is given a pass cause "we know it's coming", for example...but the One SHOULD be torn a new one cause "MS said"?

Seriously?

I think you get my point but I'll retreat. I'm not a fan of forum squabbles.

I'm just glad that it's being universally regarded as a great gaming system. That's the thing I was most worried about because the other stuff will be easy to patch fairly quickly.

If you have Windows 8.1 then you know how quickly Microsoft can move to improve their software products.

I'm glad to see good X1 reviews as I have one on the way. I just can't get over how almost every single reviewer gushes over the "magical" experience of saying "Xbox On". Tech reviewers should be used to voice commands by now. No one wants to break it down into specs or go into detail on software performance deeper into the OS. It's just "Oh boy! I can talk to it!"

BOTH lack quality titles period. The xbox is only marginally better at this stage in exclusives. But when you factor in that all 3rd party games are 30ー50% better visually on PS4. It's hard to give the xbox any advantage in this department.

I bought a PS4 due to the fact that the Xbox One seemed to have so many features that wouldn't apply to me, but after reading all of the good things about "Upload Studio" and being able to save to Skydrive (I love to stream on Twitch and save videos to my PC). I use an Elgato capture device for streaming and hate having to wait for Sony to remove the HDCP restrictions, especially with no confirmed date when that patch will hit. Why do I feel like I backed the wrong console? I don't watch a lot of TV nor do I participate in "fantasy sports leagues" so I wouldn't use those features a lot. I am on disability and could only afford one console so the "why not get both" argument can't really help me right now.

All of the reviews seem to love Snap even though it can be sluggish and it seems like Xbox does have the better games right now. It worries me that if the Xbox One begins to pull away in terms of sales and popularity will devs develop games mainly for it and ending up with just a bad port for the PS4.

Does anyone else feel this way and is this common when new consoles are released so close to each other without having a year or so to really see how things may play out in the long run?

This is not a post to bash Sony and I am really happy to finally play AC: Black Flag in 1080p, but I am just thinking out loud and would like everyone's opinions on if I am alone in feeling this way or being a whiny b*tch.
