YouTube videos emerge of XBOne Blu-ray drives failing / making grinding noises

Is it fair to say this is more problematic than PS4 issues?

We don't really know enough at this point. Failures are to be expected with any new hardware, it's such a shame if this is a widespread problem.

Hope it isn't affecting too many people, that's a lot of money to put down!

Holy cow at that sound.

Definitely didn't expect that.

It is no surprise that there are broken Xbox One and PS4 consoles (no complex, electronic device has a 100% quota). I find it only confusing that such simple things like a HDMI Connect (PS4) and Blu-Ray drive (XBO) won't work for certain people.

You're telling me that on launch date, a console release has hardware issues?

I do hope they get it sorted, must suck for whoever has that problem.

To early to say.

I think amazon needs some responsibility from the ps4 issues, it was just the ps4 in a bigger box with a few bubble wraps on one side. It was lose on the box and they didn't even fully cover the one side.

I love amazon and their service in general but this was the worst packaging ever.

Definable true, I returned mine, the packaging was abysmal.

Can you please explain why amazons packaging was an issue? The PS4 itself was already in a box with protection. In theory you didnt need any padding at all to protect it.

All this complaining about airbags in my mind is rather silly. Unless you can prove that PS4s were damaged in transit by amazons packaging, i think its unfair to blame them.

This is weird. Not a single major site has picked this up yet. I seem to recall major sites reporting the PS4 when there was only three complaints.

With articles like this: http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2013-11-22-blinking-lights-of-death-herald-the-next-gen

I can see why press is not reporting anything. They probably don't want to blow this up into something major if it isn't. Sure, there may be a few thousand unlucky folks out there who get screwed a bit, but if it's still an acceptable range of defective units, it comes with the peril of buying at launch.

Perhaps we'll see something later today, maybe as more videos go up or social media chatter gets louder, but it wouldn't shock me if it's glossed over.

some people had near enough snapped off corners on their Ps4, whether that's packaging or transit who knows, but better packaging would have at least made the shoddy transit safer. they go hand in hand. guy decides he wants to throw around your console cos he's a douche, then being wrapped in a zorb is going to help.

I suspected it was the 360 but didn't want to step on toes without being completely sure. If this is true I wonder what drive makers Microsoft have been (and still are perhaps) going with? lol

360 used:

Samsung
Hitachi
Benq
Lite-on

For what it's worth.

With such a small sample size and no actual data... I don't see how you could make a judgement.

Wouldn't be the first time ........ you only have to go back a week to find plenty of people in quoting falsely inflated percentages based on Amazon comments (it was pointed that many where not verified but they still pinned towards it) or just pulling numbers out of their ass.

Hey I have an idea!

Let's just watch and see how this develops and not claim the sky is falling like some did for the PS4 issues at launch.

Doing some analysis of you tube videos, amazon customer reviews, and other anonymous sources, I have extrapolated that there is a 98% failure rate.

Bluray drive of death confirmed. I will call it BDOD.

Am I doing this right?

I'm only asking on the frequency of the reported issues. They seem to be happening at a faster rate than the known issues of the PS4. Maybe it's because it's all happening at once, but it gives the impression this may be a more prevalent problem.

I don't think the rate has been any faster. It might just seem faster because with PS4 reports were trickling out before release day. We had like 7 known cases from Taco Bell winners and journalists.

And this thread was started on launch day, but there were several threads before this one with different people reporting issues.

Please.

Any GAFers having issues?

A couple have said they have or their friends have. One guy has two boxes with the same problem.

UK GAF should be getting theirs between now and about 4 hours time so we will hear more as the day rolls on. It's 11:41 AM here.

Jesus, I hope this is just like the initial wave making things worse than they are like the PS4's issues. No one deserves a broken console.

First thing I thought of when I heard that sound was it sounded just like JCVD playing bongos in that commercial.
