YouTube videos emerge of XBOne Blu-ray drives failing / making grinding noises

This does not sound widespread at all, from what I've seen of my friends that have gotten XBones, it's been rather smooth sailing actually.

Edit: Alright, caught up on the rest of the thread, definitely more than I initially heard. Will be interesting to see where things are at in a quarter or 2.

Great news. GameStop manager is overnighting two new systems to me, will arrive tomorrow. I know it's fashionable to hate on GameStop but when they're following policy and going the extra mile, I have NO complaints.

Great to hear Vince

Glad it looks like you'll be playing sooner than later

4 bad Xbox One's and suddenly this is a "widespread problem" and people are "stupid for buying day one consoles"?? Seriously?

I worked at a game store for the Dreamcast launch on 9/9/99. We had about 15 defective systems returned (out of 160 sold) and 50% of our Sonic Adventure discs were defects (about 80 copies), along with Mortal Kombat Gold, and a few others. It was a complete nightmare to be a manager during that!

My point is there was no YouTube or forums with instantaneous feedback to read back then so most people assumed all was well.
Don't panic because you see a few videos with defects. Your chances of winning the lottery are probably greater than getting one of these defects.
The Sonic Adventure defective discs were true. One retailer I got it from, that was all they had. It took me a few discs to have a working one from Target later

There's no need to panic, but spreading awareness is definitely the concern here. It's definitely an issue that should be known so those can get the assistance they need or help others who may have similar issues but aren't necessarily making videos because the internet demands it of them.

Same deal with the PS4 launch, and there were more instances of those IIRC. Selective memory from fanboys is all, and really I don't blame people for trying to find excuses to post Banderas-esque GIFs. "Stuff breaks."

I think it's an area thing. Obviously this is happening everywhere, but it's not on a monster scale as I feared. Out of their shipment of I think it was 120? I can't remember - only 3 so far have been returned, 2 of them mine.

Two of them were yours!? That makes the odds even more extraordinary. You would think that if you had two, odds are that it's more likely to be common. Are you sure you were given the truth?

Seeing as how not many Gaffers are not reporting these same issues I don't think it will be as widespread as the PS4 HDMI issues.
Most people still haven't received their console from Amazon yet, and if you remember correctly, that's where most of the PS4 reports came from.

I am a Playstation fan through and through, but a gaming fan more than that and that is as asinine post.
And Shu would think you were an assclown.
Serious Banderas foul.
There are no winners when people are getting fucked by their own hardware,
Well...except in those videos (you know the ones).

Exactly.

I feel bad for those who have a defective system, weather it's the XBone or PS4. It's very disappointing to have waited for so long for something to come out and have that happen.

I really feel for people when it occurs on Christmas too. If you are giving one as a gift it may not be a bad idea to give the system a test spin before wrapping it up to place under the tree this year.

So 3/120 = 2.5 % failure rate. Xbox One is 2.5 times worse than PS4. Close to the resolution difference between the two (2.25).

Way more than four. Read more than the OP. I agree that it's too early to panic without hard data to put this into perspective, but four is an outright lie.

That's expected in statistics. One of the base rules of statistics is that rare instances will be more common in some situations than others. It's normal for there to be 2-3 people with the same birthday in a classroom of 30. It makes no sense logically, but statistics doesn't make sense logically. However, I wouldn't rule out the possibility that this will be a more common issue as time goes on. If BDD is an issue, it's not unlikely that it could become a larger problem over time. We really don't know at this point. The PS4 DoA rate was only around .4%, but the 3 day failure rate rose to around 1%. We'll know more as time goes by. You definitely got unlucky, but that doesn't mean it's a regional issue.

Did Microsoft Know About the Faulty Xbox One Optical Drive?

Interestingly enough, back in August of this year, Digitimes.com, cited market analysts from the Chinese language Economic Daily News, who discovered yield rate (read as: manufactured item success rates) issues with certain components of the Xbox One, which include the optical disk drive and its assembly:

“Microsoft has recently lowered its Xbox One shipment forecast for 2013 from seven million units originally to 6.2 million due to poor yield rates of the device’s camera module, optical disc drive (ODD) and related assembly, according to a Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN) report citing market watchers.”

If MS knew then perhaps CBOAT would know too.

I whinny my fervor lowly, for his length is not as great as those of the Hylian war stallions
Until more data comes to expose any underlying problem, these are just launch batch defects, it is unfortunate and sucks, but it always happens.

I feel bad for the people who had this nasty surprise. I am sure MS will solve their problem.

Yep, not jumping on this yet.
The internet changes the appearance of defects.

I was at my Gamestop today, I helped them set up their demo PS4 (NorCal); one of the other main regulars came in with the predator disc issue happening on their XBox DayOne system.

TWO CONSOLES IN A ROW!
Microsoft should get an award or something lol.

actually, both of their previous consoles have had issues. The faulty power supply on the original is probably still why they use external power supplies today, and of course we all know the RRoD on the 360.

Got a acquaintance that got two bum PS4's in a row. Sounds like a bad batch shipped to his area though, which does happen with CE's.

Overall, its looking very good for both systems that these problems aren't very wide (besides the amazon trolling). I think they both learned their lesson on cutting corners, and also on providing quick resolutions to those effected.

Overnighted coffins for the unlucky is good news.

Using logic from the PS4 thread:

392 Reviews
5 star: (212)
4 star: (16)
3 star: (9)
2 star: (15)
1 star: (140)

OMG the sky is falling. :p

Got an update from the store manager. Apparently the Gamestop I was at is the only one that had issues, other GS in the area have not had any issues. Doesn't sound widespread at all, just shitty luck.

Good to hear for everyone else but sucks for you

Seriously though buy some lotto tickets

That sucks for those affected. Does anyone know if there's a temporary fix users can perform themselves? Aka the remove HDD and power on fix for PS4?

Cycle power with eject button held? Safe mode?

Sorry to hear that man. Really. 3rd time's a charm though right?

...

Seriously though, I hope you get a working one soon!

the predator disc issue

LOL

I can't fucking unhear it now! ahahahaahaha man that's too good.

They make it sound like it was working but isn't now. Work be a little distressing if it could act up at any time on all Xboxes. Hopefully it was just their wording and was doa.

That is fairly intriguing

Because that would mean some portion of those consoles out there are ticking time bombs :(

I guess the same probably holds true for any new consumer electronic device

So do we have any concrete numbers yet or is still just a small group of people?

No concrete numbers or any official statement. Lots of youtube videos, tweets, and of course the "wonderful" amazon reviews

Does seem to be a thing but not sure how big
